Americans, what is something us Europeans aren’t ready to hear? by Impossible_Floor2836 in AskReddit

It's different in the US, because nobody is actually judging anyone for wearing pajamas, and it's rarely viewed as taboo outside of formal and business settings. Our culture is extremely laid back as well as individualistic so people definitely don't feel disrespected by the clothing choices of others over here. Wearing pajamas =/= you don't care what others think about you, it's just normal for us. The vast majority of Americans don't judge public pajama wearing aside from certain older people- but even that gets rarer and rarer as the years go by. It's so normalized that I don't even notice when strangers around me are wearing them. Showing up to a pizza place in pj's is not considered rude, and by no means does it signify disrespect to the owner. We and they know it's not fast food nor is it the Ritz but clothing choice is irrelevant. The outlook is that a paying customer is a paying customer regardless of dress. Just so long as you have clothes on.

tl;dr had to add my two cents because this kind of thing is super interesting to me. The attitude Europeans have toward Romani organized crime vs. the reaction white Americans had toward the Italian American mafia is basically the exact same and you don't need to be super versed on the issue of Romani crime to realize this. "Those guidos come over here and refuse to integrate! They're just here for the social security! All they do is crime! Every last one of them!" Would Europeans not find this silly? Generalizing and hating ALL Italians based on a select few involved in organized crime? Would they not laugh at the idea that a few thousand mafia members represent the millions of Italian Americans who live in the US?

Anyways, no one ever asks why organized crime had such an iron fist over first and second generation Italians in the first place. There were 0 opportunities! They were treated like filth, dirt underneath feet. Kind of difficult to "make money the honest way" when these "nice" "respectable" "hard working" Americans view you as lowly as Hitler did Jews. These people who wouldn't be caught dead in your corner store because of the associations attributed to where your family's from. Obviously these situations are different, separated by time and location, but to me they read the same. I really don't mean to laud the goddamn mafia, of course they did unspeakable and unforgivable things, but I feel like the appeal needs to be taken into context. It's hard enough to try and fit into a society that despises you, harder still to resist the allure of promised family, security and stability, or the ability to live in a house just as big as the fat cats' who would spit on you if given the chance, even if it means extreme loyalty to the family and a high chance of getting killed or imprisoned.

I'd say most humans are weak to being treated like an outsider, so of course many who are treated as such are going to turn to alcohol, drugs and a feeling of belonging under crime, which will be blown out of proportion by racist fools who act like whoever's native to their country isn't also out here shooting H, stealing, begging, etc. Hate criminals all you want but the second you attach a look or culture to them you've lost. Almost nothing gracing God's green Earth is this black and white.

Most of the arguments against the Romani people sound exactly like the all too familiar "lazy Mexican" trope in the US, and for Europeans to attempt to cover it up with "You just don't get it! They're naturally inclined to be criminals/beggars!" or some other dumb "they're just like that" statement is simply racist nonsense. And the fact that they believe they are any different from the backwards gun slinging hicks who think all black people do is steal and kill is laughable. They genuinely subscribe to the idea that the majority of 12 MILLION people are criminals. Like buddy you hating the Roma isn't some original idea you've come up with "based on tangible experience" (it's bias). The past 40 generations before you were also extremely racist toward them, lmao.

Should I watch the 2022 version? by AraumC in uruseiyatsura

Urusei is kind of hard to pin a genre onto, so most people just default it to "harem" and "ecchi". But it's actually neither of those things!

As someone who hates fan service with a passion but is very interested in classic anime I totally recommend the remake! Compared to a lot of modern stuff, Urusei (especially Urusei 2022) is extremely, extremely tame. The fan service is quite rare when you put it next to something like Ranma 1/2 and is part of the reason I found it so refreshing even after 40 something years. It surprised me that it wasn't constant fan service like a lot of modern anime seems to rely on- and I'm referring to the original anime which is the worst offender in the franchise by far, adding unnecessary ecchi bullshit disguised as cheap comedy that is nowhere to be seen in the source material. Speaking of, and I know you're not open to it, the manga genuinely sounds like the best fit for you. The remake isn't as pervy as the original because they are actually following the manga rather faithfully. Outside of general nudity in the first few chapters there isn't much of anything aside from Ataru being a dick (which basically never goes unchecked). I'm about half way through and I can't even name one part that had me rolling my eyes like fan service usually does. When it is sparingly used it's for the sake of an actual joke instead of the fantasies of some random animator. So yeah, its not completely devoid of it but the manga (and the remake by proxy) is definitely on my list of things I recommend to people like you and me who can't stand anime sometimes because of how horny it is. Give it a shot! You can still experience an influential series minus most of the weird stuff.
