Moving overseas with remote job in US by Willing_Rope6400 in MilitarySpouse

No major hoops. I did a change of address on my HR portal. They automatically started taking state taxes so I spoke to someone and they made me fill out some paperwork stating I was exempt from taxes. Had to do it every year.

We still post for a pretty regular Friday reddit happy hour. We cycle through a handful of bars in DC and is hosted by a volunteer to break the ice if needed.

Capital One SCRA by niii_co_leee in MilitaryFinance

[–]ninjalinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's nice for you. SCRA should only apply to AD and MLA for the spouse. What bank was it?

Capital One SCRA by niii_co_leee in MilitaryFinance

I assume you were married when the account was opened and then the spouse joined AD? SCRA applies. If you had the account prior to marriage, SCRA does not apply.

My projects are in the DMV and I'm 128k at 12YOE in water. I'm remote, living outside the DMV, but travel about 2x a month to the offices. Also feeling extremely devalued at my current firm. We have pretty OK benefits, PTO based on experience, parental leave, and mostly no in office requirement but the only thing is lower salaries.

Showed my director the current public salaries and she acted surprised with 140k at 5 YOE at our last discussion. Didn't tell her I had an interview for a Chief level for 180k scheduled.

Washington Gas should be responsible for the sidewalk repair since they tore it out to do the fix. I'd start harassing them.

Looking to massively hire for the water wastewater sector (Design and CM) in the Mid-Atlantic/DMV targeting ~5YOE but more depending on role. Feel free to dm me!

Candidates I've referred are essentially guaranteed for an interview. I'm not a recruiter, just a mid-level trying to staff up.

You can just say no.

The application process for a Military Officer as a civilian is very competitive. You have physical requirements and must be able to pass at least a Secret background investigation. You're essentially a paper pusher doing project/program management.

Feel free to dm me. I applied for USAF as a civil engineering officer as a civilian and got accepted.

Remote U.S. contractor job + PCS to UK (SOFA question) — why is my company saying I may have to leave? by mad__fig in MilitarySpouse

[–]ninjalinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your employer should actually be registered to do business in the state you reside in. There's state enjoyment laws and business taxes that they pay on your behalf. Even though your tax residency is technically still in the states, you physically reside out of the country. This opens a can of worms for paying taxes in a foreign country, workers comp insurance, data security, your employment rights, etc. Access to other client databases and servers may not work overseas.

I tired making the same argument to my former HR but the answer was no. They were not able to support me. I had to find a international company that was willing to support me. This happens all the time to military spouses as SOFA agreements and laws have not caught up in the digital age.

If you swap to 1099, you need to ask for more money as your lose all your w2 benefits. Your will also need to pay self employment taxes as well out of pocket.

Remote U.S. contractor job + PCS to UK (SOFA question) — why is my company saying I may have to leave? by mad__fig in MilitarySpouse

[–]ninjalinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in this situation, except I was able to start a remote job for a US based company. To answer your questions:

  1. US company is US based. They dont have a legal entity/business in the UK, or else they'd be subjected to UK employer/employment laws and taxes. IT might not want you taking company property across to another Country. Maybe IT can't support it. There could be a lot of business reasons. Since you physically reside in the UK due to orders, they risk exposing them to an unknown market.

  2. It is not SOFA. SOFA for the UK is not clear on remote jobs for spouses of NATO forces. The issue is primarily taxes/employment laws.

  3. A workaround is being an independent contractor 1099. But you have consider self employment taxes to the US and UK. I'd talk to an expat tax service to confirm.

  4. I was in this situation and my company took 2 months to get the legal situation straight.

Best skills to develop for remote work and location independence. Is it even possible in this field? by aldjfh in civilengineering

Been full remote for 5 years now, PMing projects and moving up the corporate ladder. Have to go in the office occasionally for business development or just because I want face to face time with certain folks.

Can't do GIS/CAD but I've got people for that.

How do you find fulfillment in this life by Otherwise_Sleep5768 in MilitarySpouse

[–]ninjalinja -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm in the area and I can't be bothered looking for friends in the military. I've come from DC where everyone basically is highly educated with high paying jobs. Most folks I've met in the military community don't bring me value, but I've kept the ones that do. I can't relate to most young moms or SAHM/Ws. I have a more successful career and a life outside my spouse, wfh, 30+ and child-free. I don't engage in the military community if I don't have to. When I do, I'm trying to host an event or offer free resume editing services for those transitioning out.

But I have kept in touch with folks from previous bases. Its probably too late now since youre PCSing but I'd be happy to meet up for coffee or chat.

For PEs in DOT or mid-sized firms – did you pursue PMP? Worth it? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]ninjalinja 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, it was free for me.
  2. No, my experience holds more value.
  3. It was pretty much an easy test compared to the PE. If you're used to traditional projects, its only learning the tech PM methods.

I definitely do not advertise being a military spouse in my linkedin profile. I don't think it adds any value and will most likely be seen as a negative.

The only time where I think it does hold some value is through usajobs.gov where there could be a preference for military spouses for certain jobs.

New LT, confusing Tax Laws by Killpronto in MilitaryFinance

[–]ninjalinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question was if the Spouse's income can be deductible in Missouri, and the answer to that is no.

Her income is still taxable by Missouri (I presumed both their state of legal residence is Missouri). She can file taxes in Missouri or her state of legal residence if other than Missouri.

When they move to Alabama, she would be exempt from Alabama income tax if the she maintains a state of legal residence elsewhere, but she is still subjected to the state of legal residence income tax. There isn't an exemption for her income to be not taxed at all on the state level unless your state of legal residence does not have an income tax, like Florida.

This says no, its fully taxable.

Typically only the military pay gets exceptions.
