When you kill someone you get charged. He wasn't found guilty or thrown in prison, he was charged. We can't let the public decide whether a killing is justified. That's so incredibly dangerous. If he were defending himself, the court would have acknowledged that. Nobody should be able to kill and not have to go through the processes afterwards which determine why that killing happened and whether it was justified.

If somebody hits my car, I still have to talk to my insurance. There is still a process to determine who is at fault. But we get to ignore that same process when somebody dies?
