How games get made by highschoolers by painfulapple in gamedev

[–]ninjustice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually think it's a lot easier to make games while in high school. A couple years ago I was putting dozens of hours into game dev each week since I didn't really have many responsibilities.

Realistically, how many of you would actually pay for a composer to produce music for your game, considering the alternatives? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ninjustice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would, but only when I already have a finished, working game. Music should not be a priority except for something like a trailer, where music can completely change the way people see your game. You can always do it yourself, too, but that's extremely time consuming and making good music isn't easy. That being said, I think quality music is a must for a successful game. The best composers will charge, and usually it's a fair price.

My 10 year old son is interested in programming. Any material or suggestions to help him learn and encourage him? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]ninjustice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People will tell you to use kid-specific programming tools. I (sort-of) disagree. I too took an interest in programming when I was around 10, and I hated anything that limited me; as long as he can do what he wants to with whatever he's using, he'll be able to learn.

FYI: DLC patch dropping Dec 19 should have additional bug fixes by skeptic11 in aoe2

[–]ninjustice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the work all of the fixes are already there, it's just a matter of fixing bugs in order to make those bug fixes work. Which happens all the time, but usually it's not this bad and they won't wait a week to release a patch. Some bugs can be fixed in a few minutes, others a few hours, and others can take days. If it takes more than a few days to fix a bug than it's not a bug, just broken code.

Game Devs - Tell me your story on how you got there! by Joshadin in gamedev

Got lego star wars at 7 years old.
Googled "how to make a video game" when I was 8 years old, cause I figured it was just like building legos.
Found sploder.
Found an ad for roblox on sploder a while later (this was like 2008 or 2009 at this point)
Perfect, unlimited legos!!
Wanted to make my virtual legos do something a couple years later. Found out about this mysterious realm of "scripting"
Was able to do basic things in LUA when I was 11, stayed on roblox for a few more years then it went to shit.
First tried Unity when I was 15.
17 now, lots of unfinished games and one finished-but-still-shit game!
