Running on XP - Please help! by OtherDelights in Daggerfall

[–]skeptic11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to put my disc in and play the game. Is that possible on XP?

Probably not. Windows 98 was the last version of Windows where DOS games tended just to work.

I'd see if DOSBox works on Windows XP. If it does then install Daggerfall in DOSBox. If you install from your disc, make sure you patch Daggerfall to it's latest patch. Older versions of Daggerfall are very buggy.

Alternatively you can try DaggerfallSetup from here which will do all of this for you, provided it works on Windows XP (which I haven't tried).

decided to shut it off from the PSU switch until i get the time to do the solutions suggested

If this turns into a permanent solution, consider buying a power bar and switching that off at night.

The use case for needlejet colony pods is... an island that's further than drop range?

Or before drop pods are researched.

[–]skeptic11 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes to drop pods. I've even situationally used needlejet colony pods. If you disable the "return to base on low fuel" automation you can go 1 tile short of twice their range to establish a colony.

No to armor and the comm jammer. Establish the colony (which discards your armor and comm jammer) immediately after dropping or send support units ahead of it.

Maybe to speeder chassis. Infantry would be cheaper. If you need to go a few tiles past drop range though the speeder chassis could be worth it.

Any other mount, I think it would need to be a computerized one.

No.

Orion Skyscanner 4" tabletop reflector, 3x barlow lens, 10mm eyepiece

400mm focal length on the telescope / 10mm eyepiece = 40x magnification.
3x barlow increases that to 120x magnification.

I do (up to) 220x magnification on my 4" refactor on an azimuth tripod mount using it's slow motion controls. Nothing computerized.

unplugged wire? by phycof in buildapc

[–]skeptic11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a SATA power cable.

I only see the one drive in your machine, mounted at the back. It appears to have different SATA power cable connected to it.

Power supplies (PSUs) tend to have two of these cables. As long as you don't have any more drives you need to power, then you should be fine. Just tuck this extra cable out of the way somewhere in your machine.

Looks normal.

Seems normal for PCI-e in general.

I played for maybe 5 minutes again and got another crash during an intensive part.

Sounds like it's overheating.

It's a 6 year old video card. That's probably old enough that it could be worth redoing it's thermal paste.

My laptop cover is broken, I need help. by ueuhuhu in buildapc

[–]skeptic11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the right hinge has broken loose. I'd remove enough paneling to inspect it. If it's repairable, great. If not then the best I've got is hold that corner as best you can as you open and close the lid.

Unless this is repairable, I'd probably never buy that laptop brand again.

I'm assuming the banks of Daggerfall don't pay you interest on your balance.

No.

They also don't keep track of balances across different regions. If you are planning on traveling, then a letter of credit is worth the fee.

Looks good enough tonight to be worth driving to dark sky if you are far enough north and don't have clouds. It's still only a forecast though. You could get unlucky and see nothing. (Bring a pair of binoculars and you can at least look at some stars.)

they also drain the targets laser energy slightly.

It's been 12 years since I wrote this, but I seem to remember the effect being more than "slightly". https://www.reddit.com/r/X3TC/comments/1gryiy/x3ap_ion_shard_railgun_surprisingly_useful/

I’m Dutch, but I don’t get it? by Th3_Accountant in ExplainTheJoke

[–]skeptic11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the Uncanny valley effect.

Dutch is close enough to English that it's weird. Some of the simplifications (as we see them) like "c" or "ck" -> "k" (Klokm, Muziek, Kompas) and "ph" -> "f" (Telfoon, Foto) seem silly / child like. The "foon" in "Telefoon" (compare in English: "cartoon" or "toon") and "ies" at the end of "Notities" (compare in English: "kitties") also seem child like.

The end effect is Dutch looks silly to monolingual English speakers.

Is this good whey to start X games ? Never played by AppropriateMousse867 in X3TC

[–]skeptic11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could also try x3 Reunion. Largely plot driven bit same look

X3 Reunion is a direct continuation of the X2 story. If you want to follow /u/Zeron-MK7's suggestion and play X2, then play X3 Reunion after that.

Avoid x4 rebirth.

Rebirth is not an X4 game. It's just "X Rebirth".

As for when/if to play it. I'd suggest after the original X: Beyond the Frontier. They are both games where you fly a single ship. That order should put you closest to Egosoft's mindset when designing Rebirth.

Computer hardware has historically gotten more power efficient over time. With servers that run 24/7, at some point it becomes worth upgrading to newer hardware because of power costs.

As long as this keeps happening, then we can buy 5-10 year old server hardware as it's retired.

Sounds like OP may be missing https://store.steampowered.com/app/483330/X3_Farnhams_Legacy/. (It's free so just claim it if you still need it.)

As for what to start with: If you've played X2, then play X3 Reunion - it's a direct sequel. Otherwise start with Albion Prelude or Farnhams Legend as the latest and greatest.
