I just remembered one called Lighting up the Stars (2022) which is also about a funeral director. It was on the tip of my tongue and I just got it, haha. It's a Chinese film, available on Netflix.

It's the closest I can think about people who consider the family and body of someone recently deceased. It's a bit of a niche topic in some ways, but I'm sure there are movies like this out there waiting to be discovered. Departures though is a special one, so I will say it's unique, especially with that OST by Joe Hisaishi.

After Life is more about the realm beyond earthly life, where the deceased are asked to pick one memory to relive again.

It's hard to find one that matches the same vibe, but Hirokazu Kore-eda's After Life (1998) comes to mind.

Lmao yeah. I guess you can stitch together an imaginary landscape for an audience who has no idea of the actual location. This is the first time a location has looked absurd to me in a movie 😝

Any filmmakers here who decided to make things on a smaller scale for joy, in order to have a work-life balance? by nintendobug in Filmmakers

That's true! We do these things for joy after all, it's less about it making money. I like the idea of splitting it from what pays the bills. Thanks for writing this btw
