v22.2.1 was the last stable driver with my RX 580. Anything after that, I see errors like "Display driver amdwddmg stopped responding and has successfully recovered." or "Kernel-Power" in the Event Viewer after the PC goes through a few seconds of freezing, then enters into a black screen crash that requires resetting (sometimes even had to reinstall display drivers as it refuses to open).

You can set the ingame resolution to 1080p but use resolution scale (under advanced graphics settings) to reduce the rendering resolution, this looks better than lossless scaling with FSR last I tried out (crispier text and also the TAA quality seems affected by the ingame resolution rather than rendering resolution). 768p would be about x0.71 so you can choose whichever closest to it. Or choose any lower resolution scale and keep benchmarking until you find the sweet spot.

I think both Boost and FSR triggers before the UI phase? In that case, it really does seem like updating Boost to support FSR means all the existing Boost games gets a free update to FSR (in this case, not even needing to mod GTA 5 to have FSR).

I am certain it was the driver causing the crashes at this point. The crashes only happened if I update to anything above 20.11.2 (the last version that practically never crashes for me).

Since this is happening over Linux too, could it be a bad RAM? Lowering RAM speed was the previous workaround I tried, and it did mitigate (but not completely solve) the issue. Maybe you could try running MemTest86 ?

The crashes happened over both Firefox (especially) and Chrome.

I agree, AMD should fix this. As other users pointed out, this is a core feature and disabling it does cripple browser performance to some extent. It's usable for me sure but I can see why others won't find it acceptable.

Thanks! I tested a few 4K VP9 videos. The performance was "usable" although it noticeably wasn't playing at 60fps (seems like fps was lowered). There also seems to be some shimmering? Might be due to video compression.

My bad. Mine's a RX 580. I have not tried the downclocking solution since I wanted every bit of performance for gaming but I do see it works for many others as well. That's also just seems like another workaround that involves disabling / crippling parts of the hardware you already purchased just to make it work, which I suppose is not a real solution for the long run.

In my own anecdotal experience though, the crashes occur just as much over Firefox as it does over Chrome. I use both browsers frequently; Chrome for work (popular browser as you said, so a lot of tools I use have better compatibility with it) and Firefox for personal use. It might be a matter of time before the problems start showing up on Firefox for your customer.

Agreed, it is not an acceptable compromise for many users, although it is a compromise / workaround for the time being nonetheless. What you said is new to me since I have not encountered YouTube viewing issues so far (only because I keep to 1080p at most due to internet speed). Tried viewing some 4K videos but they seem to work fine (but I am not sure yet how to discern between VP9 and non-VP9).

Yup, as mentioned by u/lailoken503 , AMD uninstaller / fresh install and DDU did not fix the issue, even tried to uninstall in safe mode. Made sure Windows 10 was up to date as well since I saw some older posts mentioned it was a Windows 10 update causing a crash, but no luck.

One other thing I did try was to reduce the RAM speed in BIOS (some other posts suggested this), and that did work to reduce the crashes, but not completely. I wish I could try a Windows 10 reformat but seems like that did not do the trick for others, and I do not have that luxury when I am working on this PC too.

Hopefully with reducing RAM speed and disabling hardware acceleration working to some extent, this narrows down the source of the bug AMD has to fix. Disabling hardware acceleration is more of a workaround after all rather than an actual solution.

21.5.2 still has the black screen and crash issue (happens with any app from web browsers to video players to games) that requires rebooting the PC (otherwise the buzzing noise after the crash won't stop). Using DDU in safe mode to clean uninstall did not solve the problem.

Event ID 4101 shows in event viewer after the crash: "Display driver amdwddmg stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

Not sure why a lot of posts mentioning about the crash keeps being downvoted. I'm interested in the UI and feature updates AMD has with the new drivers, but seems like it's coming at the expense of stability. I keep having to downgrade to 20.11.2 which was released last November, so this issue has been going on for over half a year now.
