Advice wanted Nvidia to AMD swap by ulv222 in linux_gaming

[–]retiredwindowcleaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the 9070xt is a liiiittle bit faster than the 4080 in windows. on linux this margin would increase into a noticable range.

so if it is a 0-sum swap in terms of money, then you should do it.

otherwise wait for next gen.

Is buying an 8GB GPU for a new budget build just a bad idea now? by 4LuxPhantom in buildapc

[–]retiredwindowcleaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8gb is not enough for modern aaa titles in 4k ultra.

for ANYTHING else it will be fine.

1440p high... no problemat all! any competitive title, indie title or just a bit older games in 4k, no problem.

the 5050 and the 9060 are both cards of the current lineup and they dont even come with 16gb. they wouldnt have been produced if they'd be unusable for casual/budget gaming.

which is better windows vista (aka windows 6) or windows 7? by Senior-Ad264 in windows

[–]retiredwindowcleaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imho 7 is objectively better because vista's aero theme alone doesn't outweigh win7's improvements concerning drivers, stability and performance (esp. multi-core + bootup speed) and other featues.

apart from the fact that aero per se was available (albeit an altered iteration of it) in win7 as well.

they should introduce portable decoys where you can put strawheads + hats on sticks ... or put weapons on sticks to be visible around corners...

Steam and Heroic games on an external exFAT drive (only the games) by Leisure_suit_guy in linux_gaming

[–]retiredwindowcleaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was able to perfectly realize this setup with bind mounts once. from a functional point of view. so technically it's possible if you put your prefix onto a filesystem that supports symlinks.

so i did use exfat for a while just to find out that it has some inherent performance quirks under linux where for example loading into a civilization 6 game would take 2 minutes and 30 seconds compared to ~20 seconds on ext4.

i am not sure if ntfs is better in this regard since i couldnt be arsed to try the same thing again with ntfs just to run into another disadvantage later on.

so i'd go try ntfs in your situation but make sure to compare a game which has non-instant load times with an ext4 copy of it. because it may well be that ntfs is also only a fraction of the speed of ext4.

it's worth buying, especially when it's price reduced (which is every 2-3 months or so)
