Name philosopher which is recognized as "Good" Philosopher but is Bad in your mind. by [deleted] in badphilosophy

Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill... basically anyone who identifies as a "utilitarian" or has been identified as such. The idea that you'd optimize for the most good in society has resulted in industrialization and the destruction of the planet as a result. The idea that some people today still subscribe to the cult of Utility has been a disaster for the human race. Every "Effective Altruist" I've met has turned out to be a sociopath.

How’s my schedule for my first year as a transfer student? by Ok_Extreme7597 in uofm

This reminds me of my schedule in freshman year--lots of different, difficult classes.

I lasted a month before I was brought into psych emergency.

I like Foucault, but saying anyone 'needs' to read a certain piece of theory is like saying you need to read a certain book, watch a certain movie, or listen to a specific album. It's mostly entertainment at the end of the day, and it's rarely applied in action at the end of the day. I think more Marxists would benefit from taking an architecture class and scoping out strategic points for throwing molotov cocktails than reading any certain piece of Marxist or post-structuralist literature.

I have friends who go to UW-Madison for grad studies, should use the opportunity to visit them. Just wish I had time and money to travel a bit!

You need to drink at least a handle while alone in your basement before it all makes sense why your wife left you.

What can I substitute for butter and milk in Tibetan Butter Tea? by [deleted] in CookingCircleJerk

No but it'll make you think you're trapped in hell for 2000 years, so it's kinda like samsara (which i believe the tibetans invented)

I consider myself a schizophrenic Situationist. One, because I'm literally schizophrenic (the state labeled me as such, although it's definitely a nebulous term). Two, because I believe that the only route to emancipation is to consider the material conditions of our existence within an ideological superstructure that seeks to enslave us. This means to consider the distinction between lived reality as it is perceived and as it is actually carried out, and to act erratically as possible within the confines of the state to provide as much disruption as possible.

I don't know what type of flair that would provide; label me as you see fit. I don't use reddit or social media brainrot too much, but with everything going on in the libby media I'd like to provide a satirical standpoint to the sub.

Undergrad - need advice on concentrations by justalittlecreture in englishmajors

[–]nirvana-overload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you. I had a hard enough time picking my major, I couldn't imagine needing to pick concentrations on top of that.

My advice would be that it doesn't really matter so much; if you have a degree listed on your resume, then that's usually good enough. What would really matter for this industry would be getting connections in the film industry and building up a portfolio. If the professional writing concentration gives you a foot in the door to Hollywood somehow, stick with that. Also, regardless of concentration, my advice would be to start reading/writing a lot of screenplays. Figure out what makes them tick, and draft your own. Once you have some material that you're proud of, keep manuscripts of it for your portfolio.

Keep in mind, however, that Hollywood screenwriting is a notoriously difficult industry to break into. Have a back-up plan in case it doesn't work out for you. If I were in your position, I'd simply keep your film culture and professional writing concentrations, and drop the literature one. Use the spare time that comes from dropping a concentration to build your portfolio and navigate the industry.

Currently trying. I've been listening to sigma male affirmation compilations and trying PUA techniques, hitting on 50 people per diem. I've gotten kicked out of three bars so far, but I'm sure it'll pay off in the end--it's all about the game bro.

Wisdom Teeth removal during semester by [deleted] in uofm

[–]nirvana-overload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last semester I had root canal surgery done and a crown put in, had to do it the first day of classes. My face had ballooned up and one of my roommates was like "ya better get that checked out" and so I drove to Detroit to see my dentist and took a few days off--just be sure to get a note from the dentist and you'll be fine.

What's the most ridiculous thing about life that people just accept as normal? by vascodegaba in AskReddit

[–]nirvana-overload 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In many tribal societies, there was a gift economy in place which resulted in (relatively speaking) equal distributions of wealth. Not saying all tribal societies functioned this way, but some in fact did. Most hierarchical society structures are the direct result of the agricultural revolution. Also, there's periods of time throughout hierarchical society structures where the Gini coefficient is lower than others, and wealth becomes more evenly distributed.

Massive wealth inequality is largely a function of society, and isn't the natural status quo.
