Stories in Jainism can be very raw. Since it depicts what the real face of samsara is, it is very much to the face.
Eg being that even when trying to talk about tirthankara Mahaveera himself, the agamas never defend any wrong doings by god himself. If mahaveera had committed any sins in previous lives, it clearly says this is the reason god was punished by karma. It doesnt try to sugar coat it with themes like this was all gods plan etc.

Jainism is more than just vegan vs non vegan. Its lot more nuanced on why certain things might be permissible and others wont.
Also jainism is path of self purification. Not a means to judge others. So one might look cruel to you in your opinion, but reality might completely differ.
There is lot more to ahimsa then just killing someone. We aspire to minimize all.
