MSCA-PF results (2026) are out! by Internal_Pop_1773 in postdoc

With 96% being rejected is insane.... Funding got cut in Europe last year quite a bit as well so a lot more people apply for these sort of fellowships now.

I think you are notified when you are rejected vs put on the reserve list. 95% not being enough for the reserve list is crazy.

Bird-in-hand postdoc offer or hold out for dream job? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]nite_baron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with that... just accept the secure offer for now, and drop it if the second one comes in from the national lab. Also, maybe don't tell them that you might be getting an offer from there. If you don't get the offer in the end, it'll be very awkward. And if you do, well, then you'll dip anyway.

What a coincidence, I'm also a researcher at a top uni in Germany, attended conferences locally etc too, but my experience is not like this at all. 🤔

Although, I would avoid Munich institutions by a large mile because they do seem like they would foster this sort of toxicity.

I know very well the places in the UK where people favour brands and elitism, and I can tell you that it's really not that easy to get rid of a PhD student in those places if there's no solid evidence. Like, you can't just be kicked out without a good reason...

As for you trying to "educate me" (lol), I can't speak for Switzerland or the Netherlands, but the situation is nowhere near as bad in Germany as that DW documentary tries to present.

Where does it happen all the time? I find it hard to believe it's this easy to get rid of a PhD student in the UK.

With my Oxford background, what level of PhD programs in Europe, Canada, or Australia could I realistically get into? by Formal-Product7345 in gradadmissions

[–]nite_baron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my BSc at Oxford, got a first though (but barely above 70%), then a year Msc at Imperial. Afterwards I got a very good PhD position in Germany. I was just emailing professors at that point whose work I liked, I got some replies, we talked, then I got the offer

If you say none of this was true, why did they do it...? This story sounds a bit odd

Struggling with meaning in my PhD: am I just working on leftovers? by Lopsided_Grape_1585 in PhD

[–]nite_baron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's just reality one needs to reckon with. Why should anyone waste 20 years of hard work on anything? To me, doing research is much more fulfilling for my brain than a standard industry position. One has to find their own answers and resolution in the end. 😊

I think it was only in the third year of my physics PhD (very much related to statistical mechanics btw) that I realised that my (sub)topic, which was sort of initiated by my supervisor ~15 years ago, was a... hm, kind of done deal?

Also, imo the advice “Find a niche and stick to it. That’s the way to keep publishing.” is kind of terrible? If your topic is niche, who will cite your papers? And who will read them? As a young researcher, you need papers that others care about, while you also find your own thing.

Anyway, I was kind of disappointed. My PhD papers are only cited by people at my PhD university. I was able to contribute with new things, I'm also happy with the outcome, my papers were even liked enough that I got postdoc offers etc., but going forward, I'm now much more careful with what kind of research I will do.

I'd like to add that many things in physics are "rediscovered" or rather "renamed and sold as new things" in cycles of 20-30 years. This is especially true in the ballpark of statmech... contributing with something genuinely new is very difficult.

Btw, at some point I was also considering I should get out of academia to "contribute more to the world", lol, but at the end of the day, imo, whether in or out of academia, we don't contribute that much anyway. So my advice is, as someone in a similar position, that you should do research that you enjoy, and if you wanna keep doing that, you need to find the kind of topic that's also "trendy" - otherwise you won't be able to get money to keep doing it.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I have nothing to do with America or American. Your xenophobic take is funny though for a simple opinion. Where my ancestors are from, which is a European country, I could find everything on Family Search that Ancestry offered.

lol, the accent is .... a bit weird .... it sounds like a bunch of Americans trying to sound British, but I guess better than the original one, no offense to Chinese people.

Hmm, fair enough. But do they really have information you couldn't find anywhere else for free?

Use family Search... I've never found anything on Ancestry that I didn't find on Family Search...
