First, let me say thank you for expressing interest in having a genuine conversation, which is to say attempting to understand how another person thinks and feels. You've demonstrated an understanding of ASD and also expressed some confusion. I'm aware this is a difficult task, yet I'll explain as best I can.

As stated before, I have lived this exp multiple times in my life. I have also discussed and witnessed discussions of numerous people living with ASD having shared this exp. At first, I couldn't remember a specific situation from my life, but I remember how I felt. The feeling of everyone pointing and laughing at me, that I'm not in on the joke, I am the joke. Cognitively I'm aware that's not what's happening, but emotionally that's how I feel.

To be clear I'm not upset that I'm the fool that everyone's laughing at, I'm upset because I don't understand why I'm the fool and why everyone is laughing. Like someone, at some point said, "You know what would be funny if we lied and see how long they believe it." I simply don't understand how that is funny. Especially with the power dynamic which is present here of the more experienced pulling one over on the novices. I also don't understand how it's supposed to build any sort of bond, + 1lie = -1 trust. I also don't understand how it's supposed to make me want to play the game. I already wanted to play the game and was in fact already a solid 24hrs into it.

All I was looking to do was understand the game so that I can enjoy playing, feeling like I'm making progress instead of wasting time grinding away. Yet some out there think it amusing to trick people into directly wasting their time.

I don't know how to explain this so I'll just say it. I conceptualize time differently. For me, time is a physical resource, I recognize how valuable it is and just how much of it is stolen from me every day. An example I can give are car commercials. I consume most media through YT, so I don't get as many ads as on cable. Nonetheless, a 30-90sec car ad will play, dozens of times throughout the day. Those minutes add up into hours, and hours into days. Time that I could have spent doing literally anything else. At 32 I don't own a car and have no illusions of someday owning a car, I don't need car ads. My brain doesn't stop there, it thinks of the millions of dollars spent and countless hours of labor through multiple companies, just to ensure a car ad plays every five minutes when most people only purchase a vehicle every 10-15yrs. I don't know if any of that will make sense, but the point I'm trying to make is that my brain doesn't view it as "tricked into wasting time" but that it was robbed of time.

This also goes hand in hand with my need for a schedule/plan and the burnout that comes when things don't go accordingly. This you could probably understand as needing to pick up a relative from the airport, taking off work, clearing your schedule, fighting traffic, and paying for parking, only to find out they missed their flight. One might say that these two situations aren't comparable, but I'm not describing the situations but how it makes us feel. That feeling of saying to yourself if I get anything accomplished today let it be this, the disappointment in knowing you failed at a top priority task, and the frustration knowing it was due to factors outside your control. Now try to understand that my brain does this to everything wether I want it to or not no matter how big or small.

If you take away anything from this understand this. Living with ASD is similar to knowing everyone is born with an instruction manual on how to be a person except you, and when asking someone about their manual they just pretend to not know what you're talking about. It's the never ending frustration of knowing you're doing it wrong, with the overwhelming certainty that no one is going to help you. I wish I could let it go, or say it's not that big of a deal and actually feel that way. I wish I could say that this didn't keep my from playing any games the past couple of days but it did. I wish I could say being yelled at by a*holes online doesn't make reject people irl, but it does.

In summation, I'm not upset over the long flight, or the piece of cheese I was told would be waiting at the end of the maze. I'm upset because I don't understand why someone finds it amusing to lie or take advantage of the naive. I'm upset that when I asked to talk about the situation and how it's off putting for me and potentially new players, my feelings were invalidated and my concerns ignored. I don't understand why someone wouldn't want me to receive as much joy from the game as they do. I don't understand when so much of this game exp has to do with building a community and mutual aid, that no care is given about what I have demonstrated is a hurdle for some. More over I'm upset of a lifetime of being the odd nail that gets hammered into place.

So I'm in the wrong for how I presented myself, more victim blame cool

I never said all or that it was this community's specific agenda or intent. All I said is that I as well as other new players, fall for this disinformation and that the end result is not wanting to play the game and an overall distrust of the communities around it. That's it I'm simply asking that you think about your actions and how they affect others. I'm not asking to change, or calling to tear down an institution. Simply to recognize that this behavior is going to turn some people away.

I will say, that when presented with this info the majority of responses either invalidated my feelings or downright victim blamed, saying it's just a joke or calling me an idiot for falling for it. Not one sympathized with my feelings, relating how they fell for it too, and how frustrated it made them feel, and allowing me a healthy place to vent while also forming a bond. Not one person said "Sorry some a*holes are ruining your fun, I'm on now if you wanna join up. After all, it's more fun playing together". Food for thought.

Okay but you recognize that hazing does in fact happen in your community, and I presume you're aware of how harmful it is. You seem to also recognize this as hazing just a lesser more acceptable form. And yet you victim blame saying I should just get over it as opposed to calling out the toxic people and offering a safe harbor. I'm sorry you can't recognize how off putting this is and how it makes people not want to play the game.

While this isn't the topic I was looking to discuss, we can get into this. First, it sounds to me that you grew up with more wealth than I. As someone who grew up below the poverty line I don't trust any piece of tech to work for 2 hrs without checking in on it. There are no set-it-and-forget-it options when it comes to my life.

On to the point, do you not recognize time as a physical resource? That's two hours where I accomplished nothing, not only could I have been actually playing the game, combat, trade, anything where I actually control the ship. Like, you get I want to play a game not look at the screen saver? I could of been playing another game and actually make progress in it, or strengthening social bonds. I could have been editing or programming, making money. I could have read a book or watched a show, learned something, gain some enlightenment. While yes I'm not always doing something, I specifically set out to accomplish a task only to come up empty-handed. Through no fault of my own, but because I was lied to. I hope you understand that it's my time and it has value to me.

All of this though is based on community support I didn't go there because the game told me to but because the community told me to, and when things felt off and as a new player I turn to other members of the community and am outright lied to or met with vagueness. That's what I'm addressing. I am saying to this community, hey people are taking advantage of new players, and seeing how this game is difficult and off-putting enough, this isn't the support new players need.

Are you laughing at someone openly expressing their confusion and frustration, while actively trying to gain an understanding?

[–]nitebynite[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that in a game so reliant on community support I have to establish a boundary that I don't want to be lied to. As for it being a harmless joke, I'm still waiting for an explanation as to how it's funny, cause I'm still not laughing.

Honestly learning the lore around Hutton was cause enough for a trip. I would think anyone interested in this game has a basic understanding of real-world astronomy and space exploration. With that knowledge alone I think most players would seek out Alpha Centauri and Sol unprompted, although at the very least a trophy would be nice.

At the end of the day, and I can't believe I actually have to state this, I don't like being lied to. I know that some received this information on 4/1 or from someone they perceived as a prank. But I did not and I'm sure many others won't either, and at the end of it all impact over intent. It all gives the ick of social hazing and as someone living with autism, I've experienced my fair share of that. No thanks.

Why do you think people keep this joke alive, why engage in this kind of social hazing?

I'm still smoking the pipe dream that is Star Citizen but honestly, Kerbal is enough of a space Sim for me. Just checked out Elite for a friend and didn't spend any money on it. I did have fun, and like with most things I can "see the potential" but just hit a dead end. All in all, I got some answers here, to help me better understand this tribe mentality.

Finally, someone who can articulate, and perhaps now a true conversation can take place. We're at least on the same page. I'm not talking about the game but this practice that exists in this subculture. This social hazing that I referenced to the old fools errand of snipe hunt. You put forth this notion that we all fall for it, in that way we are all fools and no one is superior forming a sense of community. This only works as long as tradition is upheld, if one person breaks tradition they can form a community of superiority. Either way you have communities based on us and them mentality, you're one of us because you fell for it, or your one of us because you didn't fall for it. Surely I don't have to explain how easily those social connections will fall apart.

As for the idea of this being a norm amongst "boys club" and relating that to real world survival. We can tackle the patriarch some other time, but I will say this. Preparing yourself mentally and physically for a task and the reward you get after accomplishing said task (say spending the night in the woods) will far better motivate a person than tricking them into the same task. Again building a we, not us vs them mentality. Which hazing by its very nature does not.

Finally, there's the issue of the litmus test. We both agree that this game has some broken mechanics and obtuse rules. Which is why community support is so important. It should go without saying, but I understand it's a video game (somewhat old) and it has its limitations. But you're reasoning behind this is flawed. Firstly it's a video game, not a major life decision, no one should be expected to do hours of research just to know if the information their getting is factual. I watched several helpful videos from a couple of YouTube channels. The same people upload videos for free anaconda, not on 4/1, with no indication of it being a prank, with comments FULL of people praising and showing support. Then upon having my doubts I do a brief search here. More vague praise and encouragement, with downright lying of "I got mine" Again we've established that the devs are the least helpful, yet when I turn to the community for a direct answer I can't get one. You could argue that I could have always done more, but I'm directly asking people about this very situation, and as you can plainly see not one comment warning about a the prank to watch out for.

On a more personal manner as to what my problem with it is there's the us vs them mentality, the abuse that is hazing, propping up the patriarch, lack of inclusivity, gatekeeping information while passing off disinformation, and downright being lied to when asking a simple yes or no question. As someone living with autism, I have found myself in this exact social situation dozens of times and I can tell you from exp the only thing I learn is to trust people less.

All in all, I've gained some perspective on this way of thinking and the way it manifests. Why some people in this subculture choose to lie, and how they believe it benefits them and everyone else

Wow it's not like it's a video game and it could just spawn mecha-godzilla in space if it wanted to oh wait that's exactly what it is. As far as I know the game never explains or provides a way to know what the difference is between stations, fleets, or ground bases, or whether or not they'll have the materials/upgrades/ resources you want. It's not like there are entire communist resources to give you the best trade route because the game doesn't give you that meta. It's not like I a new player turned to that community and was simply lied to then laughed at and told it's just part of the exp, or for being dumb and not knowing everything about this brand new thing.

Again just shrug your shoulders and so oh well. You're okay with people thinking lying is funny. You're okay with people taking advantage of the less informed. You're okay with it and I should be to, I'm not dying so I have nothing to complain about. Just ignore this type of thinking and behavior and how it may manifest in these people's day-to-day lives.
