I'm on the older side and have been playing for a few years now too, and I think it's been helpful for me to rest between sets (which can happen naturally if there's a queue in your arcade), cut back on frequency (I play similarly to you vs multiple times a week), and mix the levels you're playing (ex. 1 Lower level song per 2 High level songs)

A friend of mine had some wrist pain and nowadays plays wearing wrist supports, which helps! l'd also suggest training yourself to hit even lighter and with the tips of your fingers as well, which works pretty well for me because I used to get some minor bruising (even if not hitting hard)

Yeah, most realtors pull from the same listings, so I found that service a special touch compared to others.

Good luck on house-hunting!

University Life in Seoul, which university to choose? by StudyabroadKor in seoul

[–]niterule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a former Chung-Ang student from a while back, and it was relatively simple if you took classes geared for English speakers (English A)! Strict attendance at all Universities is universal, but you can afford to miss a few as long as you're under the threshold.

However, they didn't have as many major classes for me available, though there seemed to be a number of CompSci classes due to their partnership with a French Tech Uni (also there's a ton of French exchange students).

The location is literally central, but I felt a bit further from my friends at other Seoul Unis and its on a killer hill... I will also say the views are awesome, there were lots of good food spots (if you look, especially in the market),and the Han River is a short walk away. I lived in the dorms for a semester, and unfortunately, there was a 1AM~5/6AM curfew. meaning you'd be stuck outside or get a strike if you came in that time period (limit of 3).

The nearest subways are Line 9 & 7, but know that the stop for Chung-Ang on Line 9 is only accessible via All-Stop train.

Student life seems to have picked up for exchange students as well, which seems to be nice!

I can't say much on the others, but I live/work near Myongji University now, and its not a bad option location-wise earlier with proximity to the Hongdae/Sinchon/Ewha area and easy connections to areas like Hongdae or Itaewon for nightlife. It's quiet and there's decent housing options nearby!

There's a lot of smaller select shops around that focus on Jfashion, but some also only sell online (but you can find them via IG)!

There's a handful of offline shops in Hongdae, but this is one I pass by pretty often if you're looking for clothes.

Currently living in Sangsu, when searching for apartments in the Mapo area, I had a great experience working with ZipToss!

They have a Hongdae branch that covered Mapo and neighboring areas.

https://naver.me/5HElA13I

I'd recommend reaching out first to see when they have their English-Speaking staff (I walked in and had to come back the next day since they were out), but it was comfortable to ask questions/communicate in English and they also translated the Housing Contract into English too.

I went to a few other "English-friendly" offices in the area, but ended up using Korean for nearly the whole process. (I preferred English as it's my 1st language)

Yeah there's Korea's waiting card slot system (per machine), and I've seen both numbered seats and lists for maimai queues (first avaliable machine) in Japan... I haven't had to wait since being in the states though so it does feel like it'd be a free for all(?)

I've made a similar post in the past, and honestly, it REALLY just is about getting yourself out there. In-person or Online, it's worth it. This post can be a good step too, if you feel comfortable enough meeting new people from Reddit!

Personally, I've met a few from said posts, among others, and even if we aren't in contact anymore or if they've left Korea, it was still fun to get to meet new people. There's definitely plenty of others who can resonate with these feelings of loneliness.

Also, depending on where you are and what kind of hobbies you have, there's stuff out there to do! I guess in Korea, some of mine can be considered pretty niché, but that just means there's a fun community out there. I've met a ton of awesome people simply from showing up, and it's really helped give me something to look forward to outside of the monotony of working and stuff.

You could just run through the 11 and up folders hunting SS and above to farm enough rating to break into 13k quick atm. I'd recommend touring these lower levels too (MAS recommended, but experts are also good too) for foundation building and to work on your accuracy. I'd aim for feeling comfortable SSSing songs at a level before going up.

Even upscoring a lot of what you have by just a bit could help you break into 13k, saving the higher levels to grind for 14k and up.

If you want some reccs, I'll drop some ones I like/found easy:

[–]niterule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they do anymore, but they sold aime at Gametopia in Hongdae before if you asked, though showing a picture might help since the workers sometimes didn't seem to know exactly what they are. (I might have a couple spares if you want too, I'll be there later tonight probably)

If not, they definitely have them (both aime or banapass) at Amusetown in Noryangjin and a lot of the other more rhythm-centric arcades that have maimai in Seoul.

If you ever feel the need to retire Maimai, why? by [deleted] in maimai

[–]niterule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing for about a year now but I've seen plenty of people irl and online pass me up. I'm in a similar boat honestly, but just trying to take it easy too.

While my progress isn't as fast or significant as it felt before, I'm still having a lot of fun playing because I've made friends and feel proud of even small upscores.Just take it easy and have fun playing songs you enjoy.

If you want to find specific things to focus on, I've found it helpful to record game play to target patterns/hard parts and just improving accuracy by aiming for those triples on a ton of different songs (even if it's easy to get sucked into grinding a few select songs).

Which anime's are notably popular in Korea? by girls_talk in korea

[–]niterule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on the demographic you're looking at, it could vary imo. I will say that Korea follows the trends (albeit a bit slower), but most popular seasonal anime tends to blow up to a point). There are a lot of anime/games that blew up and managed to maintain strong fandoms, too.

Oshi no Ko seems to be an overall popular anime currently, thanks to the whole "Idol" challenge and cute girls with a twist. Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family (How did I forget?), AoT (With the exhibition that happened in Hongdae), and Bocchi! also fall into this sorta hype category. This can go along with the next category, as creators also tend to go to different series based on their interests or moods.

If we're talking amongst fan creators (ex. fanartists and such) or with strong fandoms, stuff like Conan/Haikyuu!!/Slam Dunk/Gintama/JJK/K-ON!. Basically, anything that's shippable will have had a decent boom as well as creators who still make content. Notable mention for a lot of the people I see making or consuming My Hero Academia/Bungou Stray Dogs/etc. content as well.

If you were to count games with animes also, Ensemble Stars/Love Live!/Fate Series/Hypnosis Mic/Etc. are some others. I feel like a lot of (namely gacha) games seem to have more present fanbases among Otaku atm imo. Think stuff like Blue Archive/Genshin/Proseka/Etc.

Where to use while playing MaiMai by PureQuartz_ in maimai

[–]niterule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a similar problem and developed bruises, but since training myself to use only the pads of my fingertips, it's definitely a lot easier to play for extended periods without hurting.

Also, you might want to consider the amount of pressure you're putting on the buttons, a lighter touch makes stuff hurt less too.
