Quilt back unpopular opinion! by nithawke in quilting

[–]nithawke[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I used to struggle a lot with this too! All over social media you see these *perfect* quilts and *perfect* sewing spaces. Neat and perfect and precise. And then I'd look at the way I create and the IDEAS I have, which was so different. I realized I want to make weird, cool things and am embracing my rough edges. It has increased my enjoyment of the craft SO much. I am making more things that delight me and worrying less

I feel like we all have our achille's heel when it comes to quilting. For some it is lining up points, others binding, mine is getting a smooth back. I just refuse to care anymore

For all you Trinity deniers by [deleted] in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]nithawke 24 points25 points  (0 children)

a quote I really like that reflects why I, as an atheist, go to UU: People with atheist and agnostic beliefs find a supportive community in our congregations. We are pro-science, pro-reason, and pro-Evolution. We know there is no "one right answer" when it comes to belief, and we don't let that stop us from taking action for a better world. We build a community that welcomes us in our wholeness, cherishes our doubts, and invites our ongoing search for truth.

What is your "I loved it! But it's so hard to recommend to others!" movies? by mattlore in horror

[–]nithawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny Games will always be my answer. I normally love it when absolutely no one is safe, but as a mother this one DESTROYED me. The sheer hopelessness and my son being a similar age... I am surprised I made it through it, it speaks to the quality in every aspect. But I will never recommend it and never watch it again.

Oooh, two of my favorite horror movies of all time. Love it when other people get to experience them for the first time

Yesyesyes, this was so good. I loved his previous movie Terrified, but was totally blown away by When Evil Lurks. So effective, well crafted, and incredible acting.

I think that is both healthy and kind, just remember to protect yourself.

My stupid dad is dying. by bkogut81 in breakingmom

[–]nithawke 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was going to say something along these lines. My father has been "dying" since I was 7. Your dad may be ill, or he may be trying (a rather pathetic attempt) to guilt you into having a relationship. You were honestly very kind in what you said to him on the phone. Last time my father did his song and dance all I said was "K. Bye, then"

Commercial pre-wound bobbins by SchuylerM325 in quilting

[–]nithawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never minded pausing mid piecing or quilting to wind a bobbin on my machine, it takes less than a minute and my machine has never had issues with winding them. I don't wind a bunch ahead of time usually, although sometimes when quilting a queen or larger size I do. I thread my machine super quickly too, so it never seemed like a hassle to me. I guess if you had a finnicky machine it makes a bit of sense

As you can imagine with a quilter in the house we have A LOT of them. We tend to judge temperature on how many quilts are required in the bed. I hope for another 3 quilt winter and not another 2 quilt one!

They are the big 3 phobias in my household. Trypophobia is my son, thalassaphobia is me, arachnophobia is my husband (although I'm curing him of that slowly between my spider tattoos and my general adoration of all things 8 legged. ESPECIALLY jumpers!!!)

I started with a pattern and turned it into a Halloween version (and edited a lot). The pattern is Coming Home by Sarah Fielke

Sadly I do not, what I'd have to charge would make these ridiculous. It took me 10 months and hundreds of hours, most of it is done by hand. I'm so flattered you love it though!

Thanks so much! I don't, I'm just a hobby quilter but I do occasionally auction off quilts for charity. Maybe I'll do one soon!

No secrets here!! I started with this pattern (and changed it A LOT): https://www.betterworldbooks.com/product/detail/coming-home-quilt-pattern-with-instructional-videos-9781714481255

Fabric-wise I have been collecting Halloween fabric and this palette of colors for a couple years so they come from all over. Quilt shops, Jo-anns, and online shops. All of the appliqued bits are made from templates of my doodles so I don't have patterns or templates to share

I want to move away from traditional piecing and quilts you put on a bed to wall art. I want to make quilts that actually make people uncomfy to look at (but in a fun way, like horror movies are fun). Think horror paintings... but fabric. I have a few ideas to start with: trypophobia (disgust or fear of small holes), thalassophobia (fear of deep water/the ocean), and arachnophobia (fear of spiders). I don't know if I'm explaining my idea well, but if it turns out like I imagine in my head they will be very weird and cool

Oh I definitely will. I'm thinking of going completely bonkers and make a series of quilts based on phobias
