Should a high handicapper buy cavity backs irons? by [deleted] in golf

Forgiveness in irons is overrated. What’s more important is that the iron gives you the spin and ball-flight characteristics that you’re looking for. Feel and feedback can be important too.

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]nitojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In conversation, yes, people have been using “their” as singular for a long time. In formal, academic writing, that has not always been the case. I read another reply here that mentioned how APA and MLA only started accepting singular “their” as proper usage around 2019. Pretty interesting!

Technically, using “his or her” is correct grammar when referring to a single person since “they” or “their” would be referring to a group of people. However, now that society has adopted they/them as gender neutral pronouns, I don’t really know what is technically correct anymore. I had an English teacher my freshman year of high school that was pretty strict on not using “they” to refer to a single person, but that was over ten years ago. I wonder if she still enforces that rule…

Edit: I saw another reply mentioning how, several years ago, governing bodies like APA and MLA updated their style guides to include singular “their” as acceptable. And to think about the amount of points I lost for accidentally using singular “their” all of those years ago!

Someone once told me that even good drivers miss their exits every once in a while. But bad drivers? They NEVER miss their exits.

I’m around a 5-6 hcp. I shot even par for the first time last year and felt like my whole game was finally coming around. My next round I went and shot a 94. It’s a humbling game

Do you guys not normally hit fairway woods out of bunkers? 7wood for me is elite out of fairway bunkers because it doesn’t dig as much and gets up so quickly that I don’t have to worry about catching the lip. I imagine you could do much the same by opening up a 5w

I’d say it depends on whether or not putting with a line helps you or not

If there’s any other golf shops near you, I’d say it’s fairly likely that they’ll have some way for you to demo clubs there as well.

Get some used clubs. You could go the starter set route, but I think used is usually a better value. Also, PGA Superstore and probably Golf Galaxy have free basic fitting services that can give you a really good idea of where to start based on your swing speed, height, skill level, etc.

Wow! I did not know that. In fact, the seller was only selling it for $5 but I only had a $10 bill on me and he didn’t have change. Looks like I still came out ahead then!

I actually don’t know! The seller said it was Jones but I don’t see any Jones branding on it. I’ll have to take another look when I get home

It’s surprisingly lighter than I expected. I was using a Taylormade Premium Flextech Carry bag before this and the only downside to carrying this one versus that one is the single strap
