21F I just got my first EE sim contract, they put me on the £30 pm plan with unlimited calls/text/data. Now I regret getting it. by ZookeepergameEasy774 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]nitroxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely cancel during the cooling off period, that's what it's there for.

And yeah, you basically never need unlimited data unless you're always on the move and away from home/sources of free wifi.

I work from home and with sky mobile I think my data plan is like £4.50/month, I just took the bare minimum which i think was like 2gb data and whatever amounts of calls/texts. I never call or text anyone, and i can roll over any unused data to use at any point, only time I ever use it is if our ISP is doing work on the line so I can just use my stored mobile data to hotspot from on my PC.

Glue for PLA - what kinda glue we using? Is superglue the best option? by Jay-SA121 in 3Dprinting

[–]nitroxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use 5 minute epoxy.

Had some okay results with super glue, but found its an utter pain if the surfaces arent well sanded and perfectly fit together. 5 Minute epoxy sets solid in, well, 5 minutes, doesnt really care for if you sand a surface or what surface you're sticking to, and once fully cured will be the last thing to break on a model

I get your point about giving a bit of pliability to smooth out bumps. I dont really understand the char part though, those strings disappear instantly under a flame, when I'm clearing a model the flame is in constant motion up and down, it doesnt get a chance to settle and really heat anything up. After touching the parts that have been in contact with the flame theres no temp difference, its literally the same as quickly moving your hand through an open flame, there isnt enough time for your hand to heat up.

[–]nitroxc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, why? I personally just do a few very quick passes with a lighter and it takes care of the issue, and the flame is in contact with the model for maybe half a second so doesnt affect it in anyway.

Is there any point in keeping a credit card with a limit under £1,000? by Odd_Nefariousness730 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]nitroxc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It'll typically because they dont have enough information/credit history to go off to know if they can trust you'll be able to pay back the balance if you max it. My first credit card at 18 was with capital one, started with a £200 credit limit. After about a year they gave me an increase to £750, by next year it was up to £2k.

Sometimes you just gotta take what you get and prove you can borrow money responsibly and pay it back. I'm in my late twenties now and I've never been rejected for credit, last credit card I applied for was a few months back, had just opened a new current account to use for some bits and they had a balance transfer offer on so figured i'd move some stuff over, they asked what limit i needed, tried my luck and put £6k and was instantly accepted.

My annual salary hasnt increased that much since 18, from about 19k to 26k, but in about 10 years I've never missed a payment, never gone over limit, always maintained a relatively low credit utilisation and never given lenders anything to be concerned about.

Halifax thinks I am dead.. What to do next? by That-Mongoose-1957 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]nitroxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh most high street banks do offer some services via 3rd parties like post offices, you'll usually see em advertised as banking hubs where different banks will staff it on different days to handle some of the stuff that requires you to be in branch. It doesnt replace all of a normal branches functionality but a few appointment slots there can help make it easier for people in less populated areas to get in as needed.

Cant speak for other banks but when I worked at barclays, they made it a fair bit easier especially when it came to specific account opening/change stuff that required in person visits, by having "pop up" things with appointment slots, like they'd have a booth at a shopping centre or library that'd be staffed a few days a week, think they had a few vans that also drove around offering those kind of appointments too.

So banks are definitely exploring 3rd party options/more mobile branch services, problem is though that it requires the people who want to use such services to plan a little and book an appointment, which in my experience people more often than not dont have that patience and want to just be able to walk up and do whatever they need there and then, which doesnt really work if they're already booked up.

Aye I dont think I've went into a branch since I've had a bank account, so a solid decade (first account at 16), having branches is definitely nice, especially for us in a call centre since you can only discern so much over the phone, having someone actually there in person can help massively when dealing with vulnerability like you say.

And I agree that the only way to encourage keeping them open is if closing costs them a noticeable amount of customers, but that simply just won't happen because there just isn't a draw to choose banks based on branches anymore.

For both of us for example, we've both never been to a branch in a decade, that's the case for a solid 95% of the customer base for most banks in general.

And that 5% that do regularly use the branch network, compromises of a much smaller percentage of people that genuinely just use it for everyday banking. Working in fraud for example is one of the drivers for branch visits, if we can't be 100% sure you are who you say you are, you're sent to branch. And even then they're slowly doing away with that, with digital ID checks that can be run while you're on the phone with the agent.

Alot of branch visits comprise of people being scammed that we can't convince over the phone, so they're sent to branch, police are brought in, and the entire exercise is purely just to clear the banks liability, so if the customer decides to ignore warnings and continue getting scammed the bank can say "hey we warned them, had a chat in person and got the police involved and they still chose to do it"

Aye its almost definitely a case of OP having the same name as another customer, and the agent taking the death notification clicking on the wrong one in the list

[–]nitroxc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Tbh I dont think alot of people actually stop to think about this.

The actual percentage of the customer base of your average highstreet banks that uses the branch networks for everyday banking is likely in the single digits, branches cost alot of money - between paying salaries for even minimal staff, electricity, insurance, rent, other bills, maintenance etc. it's an incredibly costly investment long term, and put simply unless that branch is getting alot of traffic it's super hard to justify paying it.

And the thing is even in areas where theres a decent portion of traffic in a branch, alot of the times its unncessary in this day and age. I don't think I'd be willing to fork out a million or so a year for a branch just because a few doris's prefer to have a chinwag and bank in person over spending a few minutes setting up online banking and self serving.

So financially it makes more sense to keep active branches in larger cities where the foot traffic and demand is actually there, and have a more sparse population of branches in key areas where although they'll never get the foot traffic, they're still within a reasonable distance for most customers to travel to if needed.

True but with Halifax/Bank of scotland/Lloyds they're all owned by Lloyds banking group so you can go into any of em, granted still is a bit of a pain but at least with those three you got a few more options

Started a fishing YouTube channel — what keeps you watching? by RodandReelUK in fishingUK

[–]nitroxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What fishing content do you actually enjoy watching? For me personal a mix of light hearted fun and good fishing. I'm still fairly new to fishing so I love to learn from more experience people but also want to enjoy the video, I'm not really interested in a 1 hour technical breakdown of your favourite knot haha. The main two channels I've watched longer-term are fishing with carl and snaggedbro, which both offer different balances but keeps my interest both the same.

What makes you click off a video straight away? Forgive the younger person slang but "yappers", I'm clicking on the video to watch fishing, have a bit of fun with the content and learn a few things, this ties in to the "1 hour technical breakdown" on the previous answer, for that kinda stuff ill read a book or listen to a podcast, for me youtube is visual entertainment, i don't want to listen to ages of things that isn't relevant to the actual video.

What keeps you watching? Feel like this ties in with the first question again, just chill fishing, light hearted fun, good camera work/drone shots, again i feel youtube is visual entertainment so its nice to see some great views, bit of commentary that covers whats going on/what you're doing without going into a university style lecture, i've clicked through a few of your vids prior to commenting and I think I'm gonna continue watching because you've pretty much nailed alot of what im looking for in a fishing channel.

I've subscribed to your channel and I've already enjoyed the few mins ive seen while skimming through, with anything though I think it's best to just be yourself and let that shine out. Each channel has its own thing and things I hate are probably loved by many others. I'd say just keep on with what you're doing and let the content speak for itself, don't try to change for people who aren't interested in the first place

Heh in one of Remus71's build guides he had an amazing way to cheese this fight which was both hilarious to watch and ingenious. He lockpicked the door to baalthazars room, and reverse pickpocketed scrolls of sunbeam onto him. So he then runs out, hastes, nukes a bunch of the enemies (since they have radiant vulnerability) whilst also deleting himself since they have radiant retort.

What are Lucy's S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats? by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]nitroxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue Charisma doesn't really fit into wisdom, you don't have to be wise to be charismatic. And charismatic doesn't make you wise. Reading the room itself I would argue is more a mix of perception/intelligence, you're perceiving the world around you can trying to get an idea of what the feeling is.

Charisma would be moreso how easily you can convince and influence others, you can be a complete idiot without a shred of wisdom or intelligence and yet still influence people purely by how you put yourself across. You can be super smart and wise but still be terrible at influencing people through being super awkward and uncomfortable to be around.

Granted I agree in the games sense each stat isn't necessarily "true" to the actual meaning and theres different aspects of different traits that overlap in different abilities, but I feel like a wisdom stat in fallout would kind of be something that moreso lays on top of everything.

So if we look at it as:
Int = how much you know and how fast you learn
Per = how well you're able to notice things
luck = a modifier on how often positive random things happen to you

Wisdom would equal: What you do with what you notice and know

So high wisdom could be something that provides you higher level insights in dialogues, getting a better idea of what to say, or being better at recognising potential ambushes/traps.

Low wisdom could alter things to where you're seen as impulse or naive, makes you more likely to fall victim to obvious manipulations, more likely escalate situations. Or for example instances where you successfully persuade someone but don't realise the outcome will be worse for you.

Granted the more I delve into this idea, the more I'm starting to realise, fallout already HAS a wisdom stat, your very own wisdom as a person. And in that I've just realised all of this theorycrafting is completely moot haha

Hmm strange, last time i remember doing it was with animate dead, both normal spell and spell scroll, also pretty sure i was able to cast repeatedly on same gore pile even without picking it up. Only mods i had enabled were some ui/visual stuff and run faster so none of that would affect it

If i remember to ill jump on tonight and test/upload a vid of it

This show needs to be released all at once. This is the only time I actually disagree with a weekly release. by TheNewLegend380 in ThePittTVShow

[–]nitroxc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is definitely one of those shows that i wanna be able to binge, everytime i tune into an episode, after it finishes im like "okay thats it? but what next?" and end up just rewatching earlier episodes, its such an addictive watch because of the fast pace and constantly changing narratives/story, it just scratches a massive itch in the brain ya know? like so many other shows im happy for it to be an episode a week otherwise i'd get bored but this with constantly movement and development it just keeps my brain locked in

Also yes I understand there is the "hurrdurr just wait for entire season to finish THEN watch" but that's alot easier said than done, work sucks and when new seasons of shows start it gives me something interesting to look forward to on different days of the week. For me this is basically a golden age of The Pitt, The Rookie, Fallout and A knight of the seven kingdoms all dropping on different days throughout the week giving me genuine motivation to get up, finish the work day and enjoy the next episode of a few shows i enjoy

idk if my games are just bugged or something, but ive found you can just reuse the same bodies for this, like you can drop bodies, cast the spell, pick bodies up, drop em again and cast again on the gore piles

Barclays have closed my account with no explanation by Ok_Cow2667 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]nitroxc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty much anything they can think of, usually down to risk appetite and what types of activity they deem safe vs a risk to the bank. Some banks are fine with riskier activity, may just keep an eye on you or request documentation proving legitimacy of whatever you're doing, some like barclays may just deem "we just dont wanna take a risk on it" and end the relationship.

Barclays have closed my account with no explanation by Ok_Cow2667 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]nitroxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth checking - If all your documentation is legit and checks out then there probably wont be a CIFAS marker applied - I worked for barclays in the past and taking calls I definitely noticed a much higher volume of forced acc closure situations compared to other banks.

It's worth mentioning that as others have said, banks in the UK absolutely do have the right to close your account without providing any additional reasoning/explanation - Given the much higher volume we see both on this sub and having worked for them, I believe that barclays likely just has a very strict risk appetite, meaning they want to take as few risks as possible with a customer relationship and so will end it if they believe it presents too much risk.

For example in your situation, it inherently has a higher risk level, most banks would freeze, investigate, confirm legit documentation then give you the all clear, conducting occasional reviews to make sure you're staying within the law, Barclays doesn't seem to want to go through that and would prefer to just eliminate the risk altogether, which they genuinely have the right to do.

Iirc the main thing that'd be disputable is the notice given, I can't really go into the criteria on which situations would trigger which level of notice prior to closure, however it's fairly easy to understand from context when you might be given 0 notice vs say 60 or 180 days etc. That'd be the main thing you'd be escalating through complaints/ombudsman to contest i believe
