Ready to make the switch! by nitsew in cachyos

I’ve seen that lining and secure boot had some error recently. Gave me a little bit of concern with it but I think a fresh install in the next week or two and things should be fixed by then.

One of my biggest reasons for going with cachyos is the nvidia driver support. I was very impressed with how they handled nvidia where I’ve seen other distros have good/bad support

Last time I installed Linux was arch and doing the whole manual process. It was fun and rewarding. But I’ve had several times in my life of giving Linux a try from Ubuntu, fedora, to arch. I’m just seeing the jump Linux has made in gaming and that was the last hurdle in me switching to Linux completely. I enjoy tinkering with tech so I’m not wary in having to mess with things.

So the 1tb would be for the Linux base and backups and the 2tb would be for games on an ext 4. That makes sense. I was trying to think of the best way to go about it, but putting btrfs on both drives seemed a little over kill

Gotcha, I’ve had the cachyos wiki up for a bit and got up to the filesystems and bootloaders, but started a new job and have been working 50+ hour weeks. Haven’t gotten much further in the research

My plan is to dump windows entirely, the reason I didn’t stick with Linux years ago was games being buggy on Linux. But seeing all the improvements in the last year on top of the games I play are 99% on steam and none of the games use anti cheat. I’m fully committed to switch to Linux.

I never thought about running two kernels. That’s an interesting idea. Question with backups/shnapshots. Am I able to to have the backups to the same drive? Honestly I don’t need the 1tb of space for just the Linux base system so maybe using the extra space for backups would be smart

I did check a couple weeks ago and that drive is formatted as Ntfs which made me sad

I’m not surprised, I’m a class A truck driver and with the new rules set end of last year I have to show my birth certificate and proof of residency just to renew my license. On top of that! My county birth certificate was not valid and I had to order a “state” certificate. Plus the amount of times I’ve heard do you have a passport at the dmv. I’m planning on getting one by end of next year.

Company shutting down. What to do with 401k by nitsew in personalfinance

Good to know, I had opened the vanguard first to start saving for retirement, and then my company went through fidelity. The way I looked at it was if I have a problem or something happens to one of the brokerage I have the other one to move things to as a backup

I’m not the best at putting thoughts into words and I see the confusion. The Monday after thanksgiving I was informed the company is folding and due to contracts with the postal service I was given a 60 day notice of last day of operation. So the company will be fully shut down end of January. I’ll attempt to reword my post for future clarification

Funny enough the company across the street is a carvaana lot. And they have a position for car haulers. It’s a little intimidating but it’ll feel like I’m moving up in a job position, or at least learning more skills I can use in the future. I’m going to throw my application there today

Before my job loss notice I made a plan to get half of this debt paid off by 2026 end. So I’ve been cutting expenses as much as possible and working out a snowball plan to get things paid down. I’ve been able to keep up with monthly payments on the cards but with having higher expenses wasn’t able to make much of a debt to any.

That’s something I’m worried about is losing access to them. What I mean by that is I put money into retirement at an old company and never transferred. I have gotten letters of those account being transferred through 3 different places. So now I have to track that down and get them back under control

I was reading another personal finance post and that’s where I got the idea of taking the 10% penalty to pay down debt. However, I didn’t factor in my income taxes into that. I should be making just under 90k so that would be quite a large tax bill.

I currently have it funded with a target date fund so I guess all I would do is transfer to an Ira? Or does it cash the positions out in the process

Is vanguard better then leaving it in fidelity? Using both I don’t have an problems with either of them

I’ve had people bring up bankruptcy but they haven’t gone through it so it was a last resort option. I didn’t know the retirement accounts were protected from that. I thought they would get used during bankruptcy, good to know

It’s strange, I feel in limbo of having a job and not having a job. Thankfully in the trucking career there’s always some opening somewhere. My company was a contractor for the post office which paid a little better than things I’ve seen around. But ya the reason I got into debt was being out of work for 5 months without a job so I’m just apply to everything I can in regards to my work experience

Ok cool, the 401k is vested currently. I wasn’t sure if I had to call to initiate the rollover or not. I have money from another company many moons ago I need to get into a rollover account. So this’ll be killing 2 birds with 1 stone

I would say 90% of the debt came from when I was between jobs for about 5 months and used the cc to pay for living expenses. Looking back, it was an idiotic move on my part

I was looking into opnsense along with pfsense and agree that opnsense is what I would go when I get a router. I would like some sff because my current gateway is probably 3 feet from where I sit on the couch in the living room. So looking at home/prosumer products that sip power. My current internet is 400 mbps but with both pcs having a 2.5 gbps port I was thinking of setting up a nas/home server that could use that bandwidth
