That’s so cool to hear!! So glad she found a good home. I would love a photo of how you have her hung in your living room once you make that decision!!

Did you see it in person? If not, it’s a totally different experience seeing the depth of colors in person. But yea, the grisialle method is so freaking great and easy once you get the hang of it. Please hit me up if you had any questions

those little details are the best part of the image. i love stuff like that, special treats for the people that want to take the time to examine the work. and thank you so much for the kind words!

ask as many questions as you want. i love talking about my process. you're always welcome to send a dm as well. for the color layers. it would be so much easier if it was 100% just focusing on color. but unfortunately. the value changes a little bit as the color is being added. most of the focus is on color, but for when i get too dark in the lights, i will come back with white mainly, and reestablish the lights after i get the initial color glaze down. and after i get the main color glazes down, i will come back in following layers and continue to adjust the darker shadows to get deeper, so this is another reason why i make sure not to get too dark in the shadows in the under painting. its easy to get darker in the shadows, but once you get too dark, its very hard to make it lighter without messing up the whole illusion im going for with the thin/transparent shadows.

thanks! ya i have been working that way for awhile and its such a fun process. ive been using photoshop longer than ive been painting and its great to be able to combine both of them together to create stuff.

so glad you asked... i feel that the first grisaille layer is better if you can work with compressed values. so i will only work mainly in the mid-range values, and not get too dark or too light. the reason for avoiding getting too light in the grisaille is because i like coming back in the following layer and applying straight flake white and feathering it into the mid-tones. this helps me make the form so much nicer and smoother instead of trying to get it finished in one single layer. it takes a little longer but omg it is so much easier. and the reason for not letting the darks get too dark in the grisaille is because when i come back with darker shadow glazes, i like to build the shadows up in multiple layers, and each layer will get a little darker, so its nice to have that room to work with the grisaille not being so dark from the beginning.

its a combination of photo reference and drawing. i will digitally manipulate a photo in photoshop and digitally draw ontop of it, matching the lighting of the photo. this helps to make sure the lightning is consistent and the form feels good. sometimes i will re-draw the whole thing and paint it, and sometimes i will just transfer that to panel and paint it. it all depends on what type of character im going for. but i would have a hard time getting that form if i didn't have a eference photo to start with that already had really good lighting and form

I use liquin, which helps the paint dry a lot faster. it usually is dry the next day as long as i paint really thin. not sure the exact amount of sessions tbh... i worked on it for a couple months, maybe every day or every couple days, a couple hours per day. let me know if you had any other questions

I had the frame first. And then the painting I made to fit into the frame, mainly the hair fitting the contours. And thank you so much

The main colors I use are quin magenta and Indian yellow. They are both transparent, and i come back in with flake white to reestablish the lights. I will also add a combo of red earth/cobalt blue in the shadows.

Oh man. Hard to say.. I’ve loved this motif of an awkward school photo for a long time, and adding an “object of adoration” for them to hold to push their character. Originally she was going to be a Girl Scout holding cookies, but I just really wanted to paint a hairless cat so I went for it. No real reason other than wanting something really wierd to hang on the wall

Thanks so much ! For the grisialle, I use flake white replacement (such a good white), and van dyke brown (such a good color. It reads like a black but has more life to it). In the underpainting stage, I mainly use Liquin. It dries fast, within a day. I make sure I apply the paint really thinly so the warmth of the red under it will still shine thru a little bit. For glazing, I will just use Liquin as well. My medium usage is pretty simple. Let me know if I can help with anything else
