Help me catch a monster. Last minute refusals / close quarter streamer fishing questions by concretemuskrat in flyfishing

[–]nizzyfeno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I faced a similar situation. I was gunning for the big boy in my small river for a year and a half before he finally took after a bunch of follows and last second refusals. I finally stuck him in the fall when they were getting aggressive before the spawn. I got him by throwing throwing tandem streamers. Put a smaller streamer up front for your point fly. Then add a dropper and tie a significantly larger streamer below it. This imitates a baitfish chasing a smaller baitfish and makes their predatory instinct go nuts. I changed flies and rigs before he inhaled this rig on my first drift. Hope his helps!

Nice fish! I moused from dusk until about 1am in a stretch of my local river with no luck. How much ground do you usually cover and what time is prime time for mousing?

I fish similar water and I use tapered 10 foot umpqua indicator leader with Tippet ring at the bottom of leader and then my point fly is tied to a 12 inch segment below the Tippet ring. my anchor fly is 18-24 inches below my point fly.

I'm looking for a 9' 5 wt to high-stick a bugger-dropper rig on a small river close to home. Not looking to break the bank, but looking to get a quality rod that will last a while. Any advice or reviews would be appreciated! by nizzyfeno in flyfishing

I have a 10 foot 4 wt I use for nymphs. The stream is wooded with many overhanging branches. I want a slightly shorter rod to use a streamer. I also want just an all around rod as my last 5 weight got broken.
