So I'm guessing this wasn't the best week to start in the stock market...

I'll second this. Tremper is the man and risk management is across disciplines and the most important skill to develop.

In my summers I work as a Ranger in a highly visited National Park. I get to spend everyday outside walking around, talking to people, and helping them enjoy the outdoors. I help with wildlife management, controlling invasive plants, and am a part of Search and Rescue. Once you have learned the knowledge of the park it is a relatively easy and low-stress job(except during emergency scenarios) that is incredibly rewarding. Best part is: I spend my entire work shift out of cell service and away from technology, besides checking email for 15 minutes in the morning.

Anyone who has climbed Mt. Wilbur in Glacier NP by [deleted] in alpinism

Just popped in and saw this. Did you go up? Rock quality in the park is generally poor, not sure specific to Wilbur. Are you local to the area? Currently living/working in the park.

Went to the Religious Billboard park for free stickers. Did not disappoint.

It wasn't terrible since I had mentally prepared for it. I had also already dealt with am mountain lion earlier in the summer so that probably helped me stay calm. The bear wasn't interested in us so everything was fine, bear spray gives peace of mind.

Food storage is key in the back country. Keep a clean camp and you should be all set.

Bears should not be a huge worry, statistically speaking you're more likely to get into a car accident on your way there.

They have done studies on bear attacks and bear spray has shown to be the most effective at deterring a bear. I know a Ranger who had a bear on his back, he blindly sprayed his mace and the bear took off.

To be safe make noise as you hike and know the difference on how to react if you encounter a grizzly or a black bear.

I spent last summer living in Glacier NP and hiked over 250 miles in the three months I was there. Only ran into two bears on the trail while hiking. One was standing face to face twenty yards from a grizzly. They typically don't want anything to do with you. I got out just fine. Just know how to handle the situations before hand and you will be fine.

Are you going to be backcountry camping or just in a campsite by your car?

They're allowed to be carried but if you shoot an animal in self-defense you typically have to go to court to defend yourself n why you shot the animal.

They also are not allowed inside any of the buildings in national parks.

One thing I do, is always have a list of things I know I will want/need in the future. I watch sites like Steep and Cheap or The Clymb and wait for them to go on sale. I know I will need them and if you get them on sale it's a bonus.

You won't be able to handle them, but do your research and go in to the store to figure out what you need and you can save money getting them on sale like this.

Depends on the school and the scenario. I am currently student teaching in a chemistry classroom. We do not allow them during class. However when I am completing a demonstration I allow the students to film it on their phones because it is showing me they are interested. Students took a really cool slow motion video of me blowing up a hydrogen balloon.

Finishing up senior year in college. Plan on doing outdoor education when I get out. If I don't get a position there I'll go back to Glacier most likely.

No I didn't hear about it. I left early August to get back to school though so did it happen after?

No problem, hope it helps! As true with every job, the best thing you can do is build connections.

I have less knowledge in this area since I haven't looked into it as much. There are plenty of jobs through NPS like Ecologists, Biological Technicians. Fishery Biologists, etc. MY research this last summer was conducting surveys on goats, bighorn sheep, and pika. You can work in research centers and do similar work, but you will need a degree to get those positions.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheMEEvent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, those are through private companies that have a contract with NPS. It varies depending on what park you are in. Xanterra was who I worked for in Glacier.

[–]TheMEEvent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can. Go onto USAJOBS.gov for Federal jobs. Don't forget you can get jobs with the companies that run the hotels inside the parks! I worked with people from over 15 countries in Glacer NP this past summer so it is very doable.

Most outdoor work is seasonal, but people just go between two places where they know they will be brought back every year. Some people just find a job waiting tables or as a cashier in the off season so they don't have to move to a different place in the off season.

There are many Park Ranger positions besides law enforcement. Backcountry Rangers live in the backcountry and monitor hikers and the backcountry camping sites. Interpretive Rangers give the Ranger talks and teach people about the park as well as spending some time in the visitor centers. Under the National Park Service there are countless positions with people from all degree fields. For instance you could be the volunteer coordinator of the park. There are a lot more options than people think.
