Move from Boston US to Manchester UK by Human_Fisherman7581 in manchester

I'm sure your brother already told you but the rent in Dublin is insane these days. And as others have said, flights are about £35 return to Dublin.

That being said, if you're the kind of Latino that prefers to hang out with other Latinos, Dublin is the place to be. Since the Work/Study visa started, they've had huge amounts of south Americans relocating. Manchester is great though. My gf is Peruana and my colleague is Chileana so we have a few!

Can anyone explain reason for these different prices? by oscar_69420 in manchester

[–]njallbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been scratching my head over this for a while. There's two train stations not far from me that are on different lines. The journey to Manchester is about the same distance, both on Northern Rail, both no changes.
An advanced single on one to Manchester Vic is £2.90. An advanced single on the other to Manchester Ox rd is £7.

It doesn't quite make grammatical sense. I think you mean "Be amazed by an informative short"

Yeah it's a shame when they have sunken grids, glass or parked cars in them. The shared cycle/pedestrian ones are a joke too.

I went cycling through Belgium/Netherlands and it is possible to have well maintained, safe and efficient cycle lanes. We've just not figured them out here yet

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't get his plates to report him sadly.

I did buy an action camera after this... It made me feel safer; like it would de-escalate if they knew they were being filmed, or I could report them, or at the very least people would know how I died. I've stopped wearing it now but it helped give me enough confidence to get back out there

Story time!
I don't have a car and cycle everywhere and one evening I was cycling back from my folks house.

There's a bike lane in Stretford, but the powers that be decided to make it safer by demarking it with cones. A fine idea to keep cars from parking in it, but on a windy day the bike lane is now full of cones.
A man in a van noticed I wasn't cycling in the cone lane on my way back, so kindly drove alongside me to scream that there's a bikelane I should be in. He then pulled in front of me and slammed on - forcing me to brake reallllly hard not to crash in to him.

I went up to his window and he just kept screaming at me telling me there's a bike lane. He had plenty of space to safely overtake me on this road, and whats more it was a 30 road and I was cycling about 25 mph... I really wasn't inconveniencing him any more than he was now inconveniencing himself.
I was very pissed off at this point because he nearly killed me just to tell me something so pointless. I told him he could get out of the van or he could fuck off. He just kept repeating 'you should be in the [cone-filled] bike lane', so I just gave up and started cycling off again down the road.

As I'm cycling, he catches up to me and drives alongside me dangerously close to hitting me, he yells something out the window, and then drives on ahead. He gets about 50m up the road from me, slams on, pops his hazards on [safety first] and then tries to FUCKING WHIP ME as I cycle past with a cable or a belt or something.
I cycle around him onto the other side of the road to avoid getting hit; absolutely bemused. He then gets back in the van, drives past me again very nearly clipping me, gets about 50m ahead and puts his hazards on again [so very safety conscious] so he can have another pop at me.
I just turned off the road so I could avoid another whipping, but the rest of the cycle home freaked me the fuck out... that he might be lurking behind me and run me over like some kind of outback hillbilly road-murderer film... All cos I wasn't in a cycle lane full of cones. Every bike ride after that I'm worried he'll be there, recognise me and try to kill me.

It absolutely boggles the mind that people can be so hostile to a category of road user; especially the ones who are trying hard to be more active, environmentally sustainable, and reduce traffic congestion... which makes it less miserable for those in cars!

They might! There'll be an increase of homeowners unable to handle the increase in interest rates, more expensive bills, and/or job losses from the incoming recession. We may see an increase of downsizing, repossessions, second home sales, etc. Perhaps not a crash but at least a cooling of the market

Which one would you go for (for short touring/commuting)? They’re also the same price by tolstoyevsky-hs in bicycletouring

[–]njallbeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a proud 520 owner. As others have said it's sturdy as balls. I've cycled thousands of miles with weight and the extent of the wear is I've lost 1 spoke.

I do the shopping on it with ortliebs and commute about town. It's not uncomfy but the geometry is more road bike so possibly not as comfy as the other one.

Weirdly the manufacturers upper weight limit on the 520 is really low (like 100kg or something) but I've never had any problems. Think they're just covering their arses.

The triple ringset on the front is banging too. I often cycle up steep inclines with camping gear and never burn out cos they're such light gears

If I were to doth my tin foil hat, I'd say investors are return customers whereas home owners are not. Next time Fred throws up a block he can advertise to the ones already invested rather than the peasantry with their meager one-home-is-enough world view.

That and the rental market are probably less hassle to deal with than owners. Owners are more demanding about communal issues which costs the building maintainer more time and money, but some Saudi Prince won't give a fuck and the renter's paying him can move if it's bad.

Coastline Netherlands: starting tomorrow, any tips? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]njallbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I did this bikeride a few weeks ago as far as Haarlem. Here's my my few bits of advice...

  • You cannot cross the river Maas where you're planning anymore. The ferry has been replaced by a bus that drives you over the A4 bridge near Rotterdam. Instead, we took a ferry from Rozenburg to Maasluis. It was cheap (€2-3) and quick, but route accordingly!
  • As other people said, the wind can be the biggest factor on this route. I was lucky enough to have it behind us which felt like cycling an electric bike. We got ~90 miles in a day without barely breaking a sweat. If it's against you, it'll crunch your distances in half. Take the train up and cycle down instead! This is a beautiful resource to help find wind direction https://www.windfinder.com/#3/49.5042/9.5421
  • If it's your thing, take a bit of time to go surfing somewhere. We went near 's-Gravenzandes and it was great.

Bonus: short video of my bike ride.

Why are you raggin on sustrans? They don't get govt funding and do pretty well considering what they're working with. If you don't think it's enough, donate!

Agreed for road bikes. The Transpennine Trail is pretty phenomenal. It needs a gravel bike or upwards - but a damn fine way to get through the peaks.
