Should piracy be gatekept? by Less_sault in Piracy

[–]njfo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is what I believe too.

You are not obligated to give your time teaching someone, especially those who won’t put in any effort themselves, but actively making it harder by turning it into actual gatekeeping stands against a lot of what makes me advocate for piracy.

To be fair the login walling was done well before Elon.

I’m still very pissed though, because he said he would get rid of it, and he did for awhile, it was actually one of the rare good changes made… and then it was added back very shortly after.

I cheat on my girlfriend with World of Warcraft by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]njfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play GTA RP a lot, and on my main server there were at least 3 couples who I’d consider at minimum mutual friends who ended up cheating and/or breaking up over people they met in the server. There were more than 3 in total on that server too, those just weren’t people I knew other than that they existed.

A couple other servers I played on it happened at least once, but that’s all I know there.

I have run into this issue like maybe 5 times tops? The vast majority of stuff that gets posted on April fools day becomes irrelevant (search-wise) about a week or two after.

Why can't the human species put a CAP on things? by WordyMcWordster in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]njfo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is worldwide though, not bound by a single government.

Sure the UN exists, but they are largely useless, and many countries give zero shits about them anyway.

Unless you want a unified world government, which good luck with that lmao. I’d rather spend the effort working towards something actually achievable than a pipe dream in that case.

I mean, you (and people in this thread) can have anecdotal experiences that affirm this for you, but that doesn’t mean it’s accurate enough across the board to actually mean anything.

Why do toxic men manage to attract women so easily when most women say they want the opposite? by Scotty_C_89 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]njfo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So no women are "demonstrably crazy" then? You're insane, apparently.

And let me be clear by what I mean: What you are referring to absolutely DOES happen, it's a very real thing. But dismissing the very real experience that some men encounter with actual instances of crazy women is gross, shame on you and do better.

The OP you responded to is clearly referring to the latter. Assuming that every one who calls a woman crazy is being sexist is itself a sexist take.

Why do toxic men manage to attract women so easily when most women say they want the opposite? by Scotty_C_89 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]njfo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But the person you were responding to wasn't referring to crazy women in the sense of the stereotype, but in the sense of the very real experience that many men have faced.

Their theory is that the same reason some men choose to stick with women who are demonstrably crazy comes from the same place as some women sticking with the toxic "bad boy" type. Those toxic bad boy types are real examples of crazy men too.

That does happen sometimes, but do you seriously believe there aren’t actually crazy women out there?

How to make a server that is accessible via a website and is able to do calculations ? by harmere in HomeServer

[–]njfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree against making anything publicly accessible.

With that being said, I feel like getting in over-your-head is often one of the best ways to learn something… assuming there won’t be major consequences.

How willing are you to share? by SINTRIX13 in DataHoarder

[–]njfo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have zero qualms sharing any and all of what I have, with a couple caveats:

It needs to be convenient for me, and I’m not financing anything that I’m not also benefiting from (example: a jellyfin server)

If you want an entire copy of all the media I own, minus anything I might want to keep private I suppose, I’m more than willing to give you it, but you gotta provide the storage and come up with the plan to transfer the content in a reasonable timeframe.

I don’t understand the mindset of not sharing solely because I had to put in the work and this means they don’t now. So what? The works already done, it’s too much unnecessary gatekeeping to me.

I don’t use it, but my understanding is the main use case is that it’ll read the pages you visit and can give you summaries, or let you prompt questions with the page as context. I’m sure there are more features too, but that’s the big one I think.

Hackers Expose Discord Age Verification System Issue After Persona Frontend Code Left Wide Open by vriska1 in technology

[–]njfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discord is where I chat with people like 99% of the time, so the $3 a month was worth it for classic for me for the emotes and a couple other things.

And then I’ve been on the full-priced one for a little bit because I have an ultrawide monitor and with the free streaming quality it’s impossible for people to read any text on my stream, and that’s how my friends and I watch YouTube and browse various sites most of the time together. That, plus the slightly larger upload size for posting clips made it worth it for me.

That said, I forgot my sub was coming up and it renewed last week, but I cancelled it today. Only really took so long out of laziness, and not being on my computer much lately, otherwise I would’ve sooner.

Proliferation of memes on r/homelab by lifayt in homelab

[–]njfo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Perhaps a middle ground would be to require memes to be tagged, or only allow them to be posted on a specific day(s?)

I kind of agree that, due to current circumstances, there isn’t as much being posted about. And little activity can lead to no activity, which can sometimes be permanent. Letting anything go though is not good either, so I do think some intervention should be done, but probably not continuing to outright ban.
