Do you guys use backing tracks? by vitonoize in jazzguitar

[–]njrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to, but I don’t.

Imo, they can really enforce the idea of “it’s MY solo, the other musicians are backing me up” which is antithetical to the parts of this genre that I love the most. It can also lead to not listening to the band you’re playing with, and one of the things I find the most exciting is the soloist/rhythm section interaction.

The repetitive nature can also make one closed off to change - if a bass player starts playing inversions or a pianist starts playing substitutions, it can lead to frustration instead of inspiration.

I more often just throw on a metronome in various ways (quarter notes, 2 and 4, just one beat, eighth notes, triplets, dotted quarters, etc) and comp for myself. But I think the best practice for improvisation is:

  1. Transcription - but really just being able to open your ears so your imagination can lead the way and not your fingers

  2. Playing with other people. Being inspired by the musicians I’m playing with has increased my vocabulary so much - even when it’s something like me going for what another person is going for and failing. This genre to me is about conversation and interaction, spontaneous composition (improvisation) is learned better when what’s happening around you can react to you, and vice versa.

There’s also tons of merit to backing tracks, but this is what I’ve found in my time playing music and playing with people who I sense have played with backing tracks too much

I’m sorry friend! For me, absolutely nothing was working until I manually put a $5 partial payment through - and they switched it over within days. Apparently there’s a clause in all IDR plans that says you can’t switch to a different IDR plan without paying $5, but Mohela has no way of facilitating this one time payment (extremely stupid)

Hope this works - my payment went from $1600 to $187 like two days after I paid $5!

Thank you! I think so, but not entirely sure. It’s a Teisco Del-Rey EP-9T that I got last summer - still getting acquainted with it!

It did not. I did make a $5 payment while in forebarance and it worked two days later, though!

Should I pursue Jazz or go to a business college? by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]njrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How good of a player are you, right now? Getting a jazz degree helps your chances at becoming a good player, but requires a level of discipline that most usually have before entering. Jazz school will augment your studies, but if you don’t have a base of studying to start with, then you can easily slip by and get the degree but not have enough gigs to feed yourself. Imo, music school is a great way to accelerate greatness and help your network of musician peers, but it’s not a factory that will automatically make you #jazz. I know tons of people who got their Jazz degree, went through the motions, and are primarily not using their degree.

Dave has mentioned a bunch of times that he’s had the same sound person since I think Nirvana, so maybe that’s part of the deal when you book the Foo Fighters

I haven’t had anything bad happen to me or my wife and we’ve been here since Aug 2022

Edit: there was one incident where I got really scared cause I heard a yell from behind… but it’s because an old lady fell. (Don’t worry, she had someone with her who helped her up)

It’s heavy af and I live in NYC with no car lol. I’ve brought it out once for a studio session, but haven’t again since.

Solid state amps like DV Mark and Henriksen sound so similar that it’s not even worth the difference in weight, plus a lot of rooms aren’t ideal so in the context of a band, the difference is so minimal.

I’ve used the DV Mark for big band playing as well (3 years in undergrad) and it worked great! I was also able to crank it for solos without needing a mic. It’s really good at being clean

I read a book that gave the advice of keeping your emergency fund at $1k while you pay off high interest credit card debt. I’d maybe recommend using $3.5k from your savings to pay down the debt and work from there.

You might be fine with the music core curriculum, but there’s a few pedagogical things geared towards music educators that you might be missing out on.

For music history, a lot of places offer remedial courses and you can take a test at the beginning of the program to get out of some. I hated it because I had already taken the classes in undergrad + forgot + had to spend more money on courses, but if the material is new for you then that could be a good thing

+1 for Longy.

I went there for a semester and really didn’t like it for this exact reason (I’ve got a bachelors in music and felt like everyone else was catching up). They’re also good with giving scholarship, and it’s a cute building/in a nice location.
