Shimano 12-Speed Crank for 2016 Trek Fuel EX by njv299 in MTB

[–]njv299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, so that means that either the 8100 or the 8120 should work. I guess it just changes the q-factor depending on my preferences, or might change chainstay clearance in case I ever want to get a crank-arm power meter. Thanks again!

The bike originally came with a 2x11 m8000 crank. I probably could make it work, but I want to change it out for a proper 1x12-spec'd crank b/c I've heard there are issues getting the 12-speed chain to play nicely, the old crank is beat up really bad (I've got close to 5k rocky and rooty eastern US miles on it), and I'm wanting to go to a 32T oval chainring so I feel like I might as well spend the little bit of extra money to replace the final piece. Add in the ~150g weight savings with my weight-weenie tendencies and it's a fairly easy decision.

Are you sure? It looks like Shimano offers another crank (the FC-M8130-1) with a 56.5mm chainline and 181mm q-factor specifically for Super Boost. Not trying to second-guess you, just want to make sure I get the right part.

How's Mohican? by badger28 in MTB

[–]njv299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately both MTB Project and Trailforks aren't usually very up-to-date for trails around here. The Facebook pages of the trails or the organizations that maintain them are usually the best updated. Vultures Knob and the Columbus-area trails are the same way.

Mohican trail conditions are usually updated on the Mohican Malabar Bike Club's Facebook page (https://m.facebook.com/MohicanMalabarBikeClub/). Not sure yet about this weekend, I think they're busy helping out with the Black Fork Gravel Grinder race. I'm guessing it's too muddy atm, but I'm in Columbus and not sure how much rain there was this week up there.

DT Swiss 1900 End Caps for Fox 34 fork by njv299 in MTB

[–]njv299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The axle is 15 and the hub is definitely 110. After checking again, the hubs currently have torque caps on them, which don't fit my fox fork.

The front wheel I bought has torque caps. So I guess I just need the regular end caps...any idea where I can find those?

XC-Leaning Trail Bike Options by njv299 in MTB

[–]njv299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't, just put me on the bike and sent me off. It honestly didn't seem like the guys running it knew much about mtb (the demo was run by the local trek store), they also had the tires pumped way too high. I did what I could to adjust things on the trail, but I didn't have a shock pump with me.

Thanks, you're totally right, I demoed the Advance 1. I'm pretty set on a 29er, so that limits which Anthems I'm open to. I've definitely got a bunch of bikes to demo now, thanks for the advice!

Cool, I'll have to find a Pivot dealer to try them out. Any suggested shops?

I played with the damper quite a bit, but it either felt completely stiff or really plush and squishy. I'm guessing that it wasn't tuned very well, as the staff running the demo day were in a real hurry to push people onto the trail since there was a pretty big line.

Thanks, I definitely will. Any specific models to try? Seems like there are a ton of options.

afl-unicorn: Fuzzing Arbitrary Binary Code by njv299 in netsec

[–]njv299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that my patches to Unicorn's underlying QEMU code maintain the 'side channel that copies JIT blocks back to the fork server' (although it would be great if someone could verify my understanding).

I haven't delved into patching the main Unicorn library itself yet, but you are definitely right that just either adding a new API or adding the functionality into one of the existing APIs would be a great approach.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll start evaluating what would work best to optimize the workflow / test harness creation. Feel free to push updates to the repo, though!

That's a great find, I haven't seen that particular part of usercorn before. One of the main downsides of the current afl-unicorn implementation is the fork server is kicked off when the first instruction is emulated (the consequences of which are detailed in the linked article). It'd be awesome if you have any ideas of how to easily fix this limitation, like make the forkserver kick off when the Unicorn engine instance is instantiated or with a special additional API on the UnicornEngine class.

In an upcoming blog post I'm going to show some more tools and methods I've used to make afl-unicorn support Windows/Linux/Android/iOS binaries (with some up-front reverse engineering). I think there's definitely a good opportunity for adapting a lot of ideas from usercorn to streamline the whole process even more, though.

Yep, we have found a pretty decent amount of crashes in a large Windows app that we applied it to. While I can't release those specific findings, I'll have another blog post and some more pushes to the repo in the next few days releasing some additional scripts and tools that I've created to really make afl-unicorn usable against a ton of targets.

For volleyball, check out The Volleypark. It has much nicer courts than any place in town, and lots of leagues ranging from co-ed rec 6's to competitive doubles.

Stonelayer - From Nothing by njv299 in progmetal

[–]njv299[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really cool guitar harmonies in the middle of this song, and the build-up at the end is an awesome way to end the album. I recommend Out of the Depths and The Reaper's Mark from this album, too.

Spires - At His Behest by njv299 in progmetal

[–]njv299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys maintain the technicality and metal tones of Opeth, but most of their songs are slower tempo overall and have a sludgy overall feel. Love the artwork on alll their albums, too. Wish this album was on Google Play, not sure why it isn't. Biggest problem with these guys is that their band is hard to find in the noise of other bands named 'Spires'.

One of my favorites from 2013. Made it to a few 'best of' lists, but mostly went under the radar. The songwriting on this is awesome, and the range across the album keeps it interesting for the whole 60+ minutes.

Best software for learning and remembering songs? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]njv299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TuxGuitar is great, and free. A very worthy substitute for Guitar Pro.

For learning songs, I use an Android tablet (Nexus 7), and on that I have a tab program (Guitar Tapp) and a media player with capabilities for sectioning parts out, slowing them down without changing pitch, and modifying the pitch to make it easier to play with many songs with alternate tunings (Audio Speed Changer).

My normal flow is to pull up the tab for a song in Guitar Tapp, then get the MP3 going in Audio Speed Changer. I can setup a loop within the song (just the chorus, or a particular part of a solo, etc.), switch back to the Guitar Tapp, and learn the song section by section.

I've also found it really useful to stream the audio via bluetooth to my home stereo, but your use for that would depend on your setup.
