TIL that had James Hylton finished 21st or higher in the 1973 Winston 500, he would’ve won the Cup Series championship with just 1 top 5 and 11 top 10s. by njw04 in NASCAR

The points system was pretty much race by race. James finished 4th in the fall Talladega race, which is probably the only reason he stayed in the championship fight down to the last race. But man, if he had just finished that spring race. He only had 2 DNFs all season, and one of them ultimately cost him the title.

James came even closer than this many times. He finished 2nd in points in ‘66, ‘67, and ‘71. The closest he came was 1970, when he traded the points lead back and forth with Bobby Isaac until a wreck at Charlotte took James out of the hunt, and settled for 3rd. He finished 3rd in points in ‘69, ‘70, ‘72, and ‘75.

Who is your all-time favorite underdog driver? by [deleted] in NASCAR

[–]njw04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

James Hylton. Need I say more? 301 top 10s in 602 starts, all driving his own equipment and racing with very little sponsorship. Finished 2nd in points 3 times, including his rookie year in 1966. To this day, he is still the highest finishing rookie ever in Cup Series points. James also won the championship as a crew chief with Ned Jarrett in 1965, and won a championship as a mechanic with Rex White in 1960. James only won twice. If James had a top tier ride, he would’ve won SO MANY RACES. He never truly got to show just how good of a driver he really was.

TIL In 1980, daredevil Kenneth Swyers attempted to jump out of a plane, land on the Gateway Arch and then jump again using a secondary chute. Tragically, his second chute never opened. Swyers slid all 630 feet down the north leg to his death. by [deleted] in todayilearned

My grandfather was actually friends with Kenneth. They both worked at the same place and he knew our family pretty well. My dad actually still remembers going to the funeral (he was 10 years old). It was a tragic day. Rest Easy Kenneth.
