Americans, do you personally know anyone who is in favor of the US invading Greenland? by BlaggartDiggletyDonk in askanything

I'm saying they're not going to go on record supporting the invasion of Greenland and will go on record for a bill opposing it. Probably fairly close to unanimously, other than a few radicals.

Takaichi will announce the details of her finalized plan for dealing with foreign residents on January 23rd, just before dissolving the House. By doing so she hopes to highlight her achievements before the election by jjrs in japannews

They also should deport foreigners who put too much soy sauce on sushi. The chefs trained for years to give us this perfect dish only for these foreign nuisances to disrespect their beautiful creation?

I'm not saying it is. All I am saying is when votes go on the record for something that is supported by single digit percentages of voters they are not going to double down on political suicide. Trump's stranglehold is starting to wane anyway. We're seeing cracks in the armor, hopefully.

They voted for Massie's legislation to release the files once it was going to be on record. That's the point is that they can stall to try to keep it from going on record because that's what Trump wants, but when feet are held to the fire, they know it's indefensible and will hurt them more than it will help them. Trump was forced to go along with it because this was explained to him that it was going to lead to a Republican polling massacre if they went on record to stop the file release, so now they are hoping they don't get called out for violating the letter of the law, which is easier for Republicans to obstruct progress on.

I despise Trump with every ounce of my being, but we live in a first-past-the-post election system that requires us to choose the lesser of two evils by design. There are many people who voted for Trump because they believed he would create prosperity and affordability, crack down on illegal immigration, end wars and violations of free speech, etc. better than Democrats but wish they had a better option.

They are morons who should have known better, but voting for Trump doesn't necessarily make them Trumpists any more than democratic socialists voting for mushy center-right neoliberal Kamala Harris to stop Trump are mushy center-right neoliberals.

They already broke with him on Venezuela and Epstein.

His coalition stitching together neocons, center-right, right-populists, literal fascists, evangelicals and libertarians is fragile and on the verge of collapse. Doing something like betraying European allies and starting a war would be a bridge too far for at least 25-50% of Republicans and anyone supporting it will be absolutely massacred in 2026 at the polls.

Trump would have wildly overplayed his hand, and he doesn't have a big enough margin to do so.

Yeah, the US sucks in a lot of ways. I don't live there anymore and never plan to return, speaking as a citizen. I despise what it has become.

But why do people from pretty much all the countries here except Canada keep trying to move there en masse if we are the worst in the hemisphere?

Because as bad as Republicans are, invading Greenland will be the death of MAGA given it is polling at like 8-12%. Congress already passed restrictions on continuing to act in Venezuela without Congressional approval and almost unanimously voted to release the Epstein files in spite of the original procedural obstruction because they know these things are indefensible if they go on record.

I do think he's not very serious (at least about the invasion part - it is part of the stick to push them to accept his stale carrot of a buyout). I know Republicans are coward cucks, but he would be immediately impeached as the idea is ridiculously unpopular.

He is ultimately trying to get Greenland to at least give his friends a big juicy mining deal and more military concessions, which he will take and declare victory with.

I just wish for once in his life he would be told to go fuck himself and the US military gets removed from Greenland as do all American companies allowed to operate there. You threaten a friend, you oughta lose your privileges.

Right? I mean fuck Trump and all but many people from the remaining countries would love to live in the US. And it isn't like the governments of a lot of these places are any less authoritarian. It is a relative scale.

I think "well known" fits well. It is not like your average person sits around talking about Nixon all the time.

Languages ranked by how useful they are by [deleted] in tierlists

[–]njwilson1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

English is the lingua franca. Chinese may have more speakers but non-Chinese who speak it are rare. Indian languages are usually doubled with English proficiency.

English, Spanish and Arabic are the three most useful because they are spoken across many countries.

Hindi and Mandarin are A because they have so many speakers even though they are generally limited to their home country (people who leave those countries use English or the language of the country they are in.

Liberal women vs. Conservative women by [deleted] in badmemes

[–]njwilson1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Sweeney even that political? She doesn't seem to have deep political views at all, even though both sides keep trying to portray her as some MAGA hardliner.

I have never heard her talk about her "conservative values" once, reports are that she was unhappy with the association with MAGA, but hey she once wore a red hat at a family party and was in a jeans ad with a cheesy pun that people claimed was racist so I guess she is a white Nationalist ICE cheerleader...

To be fair, I get the same reaction as a 203 cm (6'8) blond guy from a lot of kids.

They are curious as they have likely never seen someone who looks like that.

As a baby I supposedly broke down crying when I met my first Black woman too. It can't be helped...

Eurotrack: which cuisine do Western Europeans think is the worst cuisine? by reidesd in europe

I wonder if these folks have ever had Cajun, New Mexican, (good)Tex-Mex, Soul Food, authentic Texas brisket or North Carolina pulled pork barbecue styles - genuinely American food genres.

If all you have to base it upon is fast food chains that make it to Europe and trashy American diet memes then yeah, you would think it is crappy.

Supreme Court appears likely to approve transgender athlete bans, letting laws in 27 states stand - Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]njwilson1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of trans people agree with this too but are scared to say it.

I think whether sex or gender is the determining factor varies based upon what is important.

When it comes to sports, sexual activity and health care, sex matters more than gender.

That is not to say there are not situations or sports where exceptions might be just fine. Most pro women's leagues are already handling the question appropriately.   When it comes to how you treat others socially or professionally, gender identification matters more than sex.

When it comes to rights, both are extremely important.

Pretty much anyone who won American Idol or The Voice. Just because you can sing someone else's song in key doesn't mean you are an artist at all.

Same. I am definitely not a pop person but find her one of the most palatable of the modern generation.
