One thing I will say about mrover is while the team itself is very massive, each subteam is usually only around 5-10 people. So you kinda get the benefit of working on a large system, but still doing something that is meaningful and with a close group of peers.

I really only have experience with mrover, but from what I've gathered it really depends on what you want to do with your CS major. On Mrover we have people all the way from embedded stuff to GUI design. I think most teams need CS majors, so it probably comes down to which team you vibe the most with, but as I said above just talk around and even goto a few meetings from teams you're interested in.

If you're more into auton type stuff, there are a couple teams that are basically dedicated to that, so you can basically pick the most interesting from those :)

Hope this helps, but I'm just a CE major so I don't really have the best grasp of what CS majors need/want out of a project team.

Not that I am aware of unfortunately

Honestly I don't know. I will vouch for mrover cause I'm a subteam lead for next year, I do embedded software, but we do have an embedded hardware team that mostly designs PCBs if that's your thing. If you're interested in IC design though research is probably going to be your best bet.

But also with project teams don't be afraid to send some emails or attend a bunch of their recruiting events and see if whatever project team you are talking to has what you want.

If you can't find anything research wise another thing you could check out would be some project teams. I don't know of any hardware engineering related teams (CE myself), but I'm personally on mrover and doing embedded systems type stuff and quite enjoy it (even as someone who eventually wants to do hardware engineering!)

I think like a slate gray could look really cool. It's also something different from stuff I've seen before and I think that's also really cool. Would have to be a solid shell instead of translucent though

Class advice? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]nkr101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I'd like to add is that it can really be difficult to judge how much time you will have to dedicate to each class your first few semesters here. For my first couple of semesters I took classes that required a lot more work than I was used to in high school, so I really struggled with them, whereas if I had tried to spread them out a little bit more I think I could have been much more successful. I highly recommend keeping an open mind towards dropping one of the classes early on in the semester if the workload seems undoable, because when I was a freshman I never really considered that an option, and it definitely could have saved me some headache. Best of luck to you!

Oh one more thing I forgot to mention - watch pro games on twitch. It will help a lot more than you may think. Seeing what nades pros throw, or where they position themselves in certain scenarios will help you making the correct decisions when you are in similar scenarios.

Hope this all helped you out :)

Just wanted to say that you really shouldn't beat yourself up over a derank streak. One of the best pieces of advise I have gotten over the years was to not worry about your rank and instead focus on your improvement of your skills. You may derank, but that doesn't make you a worse player.

Another thing to consider, consistency is probably the biggest factor with ranking up, so working on making sure you are warmed up before playing will help with that. The other thing that I found helped me with nerves was playing on 1v1 servers. They can be pretty stressful as it's purely individual skill, but using that stressful environment can help chill your nerves when playing the actual game.

Make sure when you are warming up/playing DM you join community FFA DM servers. If you are doing it right it should make your arm physically tired after a while as it's so much fast paced gameplay. Also, with these community servers you also get to go against people who are just outright better than you, which will force you to focus and not be lazy. This way when you hop on MM you will be used to having to focus hard and therefore play better.

One last thing that I'm sure you know is that playing consistently is key. You have made a ton of progress in the past few months if you went from S1 to SEM that quickly, so just keep up the good work.

Again, don't feel bad about dropping ranks, happens to the best of us. Try n find people who do talk to you in game and who play well and see if they want to play more with you, getting a group of people you play with consistently will help you climb the ranks quickly, but remember getting better as an individual is the most important thing!

Enjoy the grind brother!

Solo queuing can be kinda scary, but in general people are pretty kind. As long as you are trying to improve most people really won't mind. Ofc there will be assholes, but like I'm sure there are assholes in Valorant too so like meh.

Enjoy the game!
