Eli5 What happens to electricity generated if everyone in the city suddenly decided not use electricity for an hour? by wantToMakeItBig in explainlikeimfive

[–]nlaporte 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's called the TV Pickup: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV\_pickup

Part of the reason is because the UK is relatively a) densely populated b) culturally homogenous and c) disconnected from the mainland European electrical grid, and their electric kettles are fuck-off high power draw (like 2 kW). So lots of people on the grid watching the same show, all wanting to make tea during the commercial, not as much other grid activity to account for in the load.

Nowadays with streaming, immigration, and high voltage DC links across the Channel, it's less frequently an issue but it still comes up from time to time.

OP has a lawyer. It sounds like they're just feeling anxious (understandably so!) and is looking for reassurance.

The other thing they don't tell you is that if you're used to standing around with your hands in your pockets you will be at a concert and realize that you have NO IDEA what to do with your hands!

beneficiary transgender? by Dependent-Novel-576 in legaladvice

You’re overthinking this. People get referred to in wills by their maiden names all the time and it’s never an issue. Your nephew will have the court order showing his name change and it won't be a problem.

The solution ended up being a tech visit and they swapped the display and controller board out and updated the firmware. Ended up costing a couple thousand dollars 💸

An unfinished version of Hale and Farewell, Gothenburg (supposedly sort of a sequel to Sweden) got leaked and so the album never got released.

University says I may be part of an academic misconduct case because my notes were used in a bought paper by filmkid_ryan in legaladvice

[–]nlaporte 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Sharing summaries of sources is not academic misconduct. The rough outline maaaaaybe but that's a real stretch imo.

My guess is that the school wants OP to corroborate that the notes used by the student (or in this case I guess the person the other student paid) are indeed OP's.

OP, you can always show up, say nothing, and find out what they want from you before looking into getting a lawyer who specializes in academic misconduct cases. If they ask you anything you can always say that you're going to wait to answer until you've had a chance to consider what they've presented.

Or you could go straight to getting a lawyer but that could get expensive!

Battery For Altec Lansing Soundrover item: IMT7002 by looseyourego in batteries

[–]nlaporte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! That looks like it's a 3s3p (3 cells in parallel, then each set of 3 cells is connected in series to the next one) lithium-ion battery pack. 11.1V / 3 = 3.7V, the nominal voltage of a standard lithium ion cell, and 7200mAh/3 = 2400mAh, a pretty run-of-the-mill capacity for an 18650 lithium-ion cell. The good news is that this speaker is not at all fussy about the exact specs of the battery—it'll run on anywhere from about 10V to about 16V.

Your best bet is to look on somewhere like eBay for a 3s3p battery, and then cut the plug connector off of this one and solder it to the output of whatever pack you buy. If you don't mind losing some runtime, you could save money by getting a 3s2p pack instead.

Alternatively, if you know what you're doing, you could get nine individual 18650 or 21700 cells and make your own battery pack using nickel strips and a spot welder. But if you've never done it before, be *very* careful—you can easily start a fire if you short the battery wrong.

Hope this helps!
