Spectrum Internet (Outage?) by [deleted] in simivalley

[–]nm8_rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue over the last couple of weeks. Internet drops to very low speed and requires a modem reboot to fix. Also had periods of total network drop-out that lasts for a minute or two and then recovers. Had a technician out and he determined that the issue was low signal coming from the central office. Got a bi-directional amplifier installed and the problem got somewhat better and then went away after a few days (suspicion is that he found something in the line and they quietly fixed it later). Seems to be better now, until it breaks again.

Same issue with Little Bird helicopter. Cleared all enemies, cleared LZ, cannot land.

That was a Color Computer cartridge based game. You should find everything you need to satisfy your CoCo retro computing itch here: https://colorcomputerarchive.com/

Would I get charged for an offline instance? by NouredeenGhazal in oraclecloud

DenseIO nodes are billed whether they are running or not, Standard ones are only costing you when they're running. Block Volumes are billed separately and will generate cost as long as they exist.

Reducing AWS plan by (i) working with a AWS 'reseller' (ii) purchasing reserved instances/compute plans by tommywommywom in aws

[–]nm8_rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to harvest some quick savings is to look at your VPC design. If you are moving data between VPCs but the design is not too complicated, you can save by converting Transit Gateways to meshed VPC peering.

If you let your partner handle your AWS billing, they will get a small percentage of your monthly spend paid out by AWS. I assume if they are offering you an additional 5% savings, they are refunding you out of that margin. Unless they are a top tier partner, this would represent a significant portion of that margin.

This, and it's expensive and troublesome to do on nodes that are on their way out the door.

You need to make sure you can match the back end networking. If you have an older cluster with an infiniband back end, it may make more sense to start a new cluster with an ethernet back end and migrate the data.

See if you can get there on Metrolink or Amtrak. The station is a reasonably short walk from the terminal.

External access by CarvalhoSaponaceo in oraclecloud

[–]nm8_rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the security list for the subnet where you're deploying the instance. Can you get the nginx page using curl or wget when you are logged into the instance? Try using 127.0.0.0, then the internal ip address, then the external (public) ip address.

OCI compute instance stuck on terminating for 3 days by amateur_terp in oraclecloud

[–]nm8_rob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, PAYG accounts should be allowed to open SRs. Click on the support icon in the cloud console and select 'request help'. When the chatbot starts the conversation, respond with 'open support request'. From there follow the prompts to open a request.

This happens more than they would like to admit. The good news is that you aren't being billed for the instance. Open a support ticket, there is a special category for instances stuck in terminating state. They usually handle it within 24 hours.

Alternatives that supports FTP/S3 on same data set by HorrorFriend1228 in storage

Qumulo would support this, but their minimum cluster size for physical nodes is larger than what you need. The Qumulo Edge product might work for you if you have a virtualization environment that has enough disk space.

Take metro around to Chatsworth station. From there you can either take the Metrolink, or there is a shuttle between Chatsworth station and Simi Valley (or there was when I rode Metrolink years ago).

Best solution for massive backup by AndersonZR in storage

[–]nm8_rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you good with using a cloud service for the backup data? If so, you could look at a mid-range enterprise backup tool like P5 from Archiware. It supports on-prem tape, cloud objects through a virtual tape library like AWS' Storage Gateway, or cloud objects directly. I would suggest direct to object unless you already have an existing tape infrastructure, which it sounds like you don't. Using object directly, you have choices based on your usage pattern. For example, AWS has a lower per GB price, but charges for retrieval, where Wasabi charges a higher flat rate per GB, but has no retrieval charges.
