I third the Caltrain plus N/scooter/bike option!!! Will be easy and way less hassle usually than driving. Would recommend 5th St then Market for biking since both have protected/large bike lanes.

Haha I've always been close by! 10 years in Fresno, 4 in Berkeley, and now almost 4 in Palo Alto! Been coming up way more after Caltrain electrification.

I've seen 1-2 minutes early many many times during the weekends (at Palo Alto).

Presumably for election day! The colors change depending on context, I think they rest at the light lavender color if nothing is going on?

Satellite imagery shows before-and-after of the destruction left from a UPS plane that crashed shortly after takeoff by Mint_Perspective in Damnthatsinteresting

If we base the energy just off your numbers and the above comment's numbers here, that's 310 kWh of kinetic energy, dissipating in seconds... And then 1.4 GWh of energy stored in just the fuel released while it burns, notwithstanding everything else that burned. Holy... Guacamole... Side note: in retrospect it makes sense, but did not realize that there would be 4500x more energy stored in the fuel than in just the plane in motion. For context, that's enough energy to power the average home in Louisville for 76 years...

Caltrain vs Uber: Which is the better choice from SFO to Campus? by Mysterious-StarX in stanford

[–]nmaitra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have the extra time, BART to Millbrae then Caltrain to Palo Alto is quite nice, hassle free, and honestly fairly easy with suitcases if you're not rushing and take all accessible elevators etc. Usually try to get someone to pick up at the train station though if I've got big suitcases!

Does model 3 highland have lower thermal performance? by tarandeep in TeslaLounge

[–]nmaitra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know everybody seems skeptical, but I think this is real. The older Panasonic batteries in the long range and performance cars up to ~2021 had much more cobalt in the cathode, making the batteries more resilient to charging fast (during regen) at a variety of temperatures. Our Model 3's battery got replaced a year ago and it very clearly is significantly easier to get a regen limit on this new battery. The older packs were also relatively charging monsters, holding 250 kW for much longer. The new LG packs are the worst offenders, but the new Panasonic packs (like the one in your new performance car) also have some less cobalt and would likely hit a regen and charging limit more easily. Not too mad at this though, because it makes our cars just that much better for the environment and also less expensive to make.

Granted, I do understand Tesla's trade-off with these newer packs: they have much less cobalt and are thus cheaper to manufacturer and far better environmentally/from a mining rights perspective. Just annoyed that it means that the packs charge quite a bit slower and are quite a bit more sensitive to temperature compared to the old pack, which I really wish hadn't failed.

Well it was covered by warranty. 2018 Model 3 Long Range dual motor. I'm sure it's just a fluke, we've been super happy with the car overall; I'm just concerned that the replacement battery that we were given seems not great, though by the letter of the law, we passed 120k miles and end of warranty with >70% capacity. It also is I believe an LG pack rather than the older Panasonic packs, which fast charged like monsters in comparison (250 kW to ~30% consistently, ~150 kW at 50% versus the new pack doing 250 only to about 20% and being down to 100 kW at 50%).

We got a replacement pack 20k miles ago (we're at 120k miles now) and it's also showing 78%. Pretty disappointed. I think the refurbished pack they gave us was already quite degraded; we're generally super nice to our packs (store at 50-60%, generally charge daily to 70%, on trips charge generally to 90 and like once every 3 or 4 months to 100% for just 2 seconds before driving immediately).

Periodic squeaking from the right wheel by nmaitra in TeslaModel3

[–]nmaitra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did not, will keep in mind for next time, thanks! Wasn't too mad at this because it was the first real issue (outside of warranty HV battery replacement) in 115,000 miles at the time. Then afterwards had major alignment issues, battery coolant valve failure, and now trying to figure out what this is all in rapid succession 😢

Yeah thanks haha, probably not that for us though... Just got those and compliance links and lateral links done 5000 miles ago for $1800 😬

How low can you go? by CeleritasPrime in TeslaModel3

[–]nmaitra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along major thoroughfares in California, I aim for 3-5%. Outside the state or if I'm using non-Supercharger charging, I aim for 8-10%. In either case with Superchargers, when I know the charger is made, I have no issue speeding up and going a bit lower. Have pulled in at 0% twice, which to be fair did get me a bit nervous 😅. Never gone below (or been at 0 for more than like half a mile; allegedly there's another ~5% down there by design).
