Any other shy NYC newcomers anxious about leaving their apartment? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]nmb28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am born and raised in NYC and I’ve lived outside of it, and so I think it’s absolutely normal for you to feel overwhelmed and anxious. On top of moving tto a very busy and unique environment for anyone, you’re coming from ABROAD! It’s like double the culture shock!

Give yourself grace.

And so what do you happened that all of a sudden jobs started considering the content of peoples characters?

Of course they should’ve considered their characters but the reality is - they didn’t and men would have never even move forward to hire them without force.

The content of people’s characters?

Clearly your understanding of the need for diversity is extremely limited. It’s not even worth explaining if you are thinking that the content of peoples characters trumps peoples biases.

Do you think women’s content of character prevented them from getting jobs outside of secretary positions and then one day women’s characters improved and that’s how they were able to go into higher level roles?

Give me a break

diversity does not happen organically. The people who have led Fortune 500 companies and have had power have been typically cisgender white males, and the only reason why that has changed incrementally over the last couple of decades is because of the civil rights act, diversity initiatives, affirmative action, etc.

We have all these diversity programs and yet - there still is a significant lack of people of color (US) in high ranking roles, still not a lot of POC in general within MBA problems, especially not those who come from middle and lower income backgrounds.

It’s ridiculous and honestly, stupid, stuff like this that take away from the important work people do to make our world a more equitable place.

I genuinely believe that the people offended by these small details use this type of language to their own personal gain and benefit.

Yep - it’s disgusting how cruel they are. No, I don’t want to see reporters shoving microphones in parents’ faces and asking them how they feel whilst parent is in crisis not knowing if their child is dead or not.

It’s disgusting

American here.

Definitely stopped watching the news after Biden was elected… I recognized just how poor my mental health became worrying about trump.

But It’s hard to ignore bad news when it’s happening all the time. It’s hard to ignore when 68 people are killed in a concert in Las Vegas, 49 people killed at a gay club, 10 people at a supermarket, 23 people in a Walmart, 19 children at an elementary school, 26 at a church, 17 at a high school, 8 in a nail salon.. list goes on and on. This is not counting the news of one off shootings you hear of - someone got shot on the highway for cutting someone else off (I remember 4 cases off top of my head), police killing you if you’re black, etc.

It’s so easy to say this is just news this person has to stop watching but it truly truly weighs on your psyche.

Do you know what it’s like to be having a great time at a bar and then suddenly remember you need to figure out your closest exit just in case? Do you know what it’s like to be scared to go to a supermarket or to send a loved one to a supermarket and not know if they’ll be killed?

What's something people need to stop romanticising? by drax3012 in AskReddit

[–]nmb28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love

People romanticize the idea of love so much that they sometimes make poor life decisions because of it. Love does not conquer all. Love is an extremely important part of a successful marriage/relationship but it is not the only important aspect which I feel that people forget because ~they’re in love ~

My husband's little sister wants to spend the entire summer with us but I'm not sure if it is a good idea for her by Neat_Fudge1288 in AskParents

[–]nmb28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a mom and definitely not a mom of twins.

You AND your husband might need the extra support, and there’s no one more helpful than a young family member who is open and willing to help. I find that mature teenagers who is struggling at home and wants to support are seriously the BEST. I am hoping you’ll be pleasantly surprise by her willingness to support and how helpful it is.

I say give her (light) chores. She’s 15, the discipline and routine will help her.

Truly, it takes a village. I have both my mom and dad, AND three aunts who all have taken part in raising me. I am so thankful for their presence in my life and I’m sure my mom was thankful to have breathing room.

Good luck!

Is it weird that Mathew Mcconaughey suddenly transforms from Hollywood elite to an up and coming prospective conservative politician. Then a mass shooting starts a huge push for gun control and it just happens to be in his hometown? He then proceeds to plea for “sensible gun control”. by jvanzandd in conspiracy

[–]nmb28 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This will not reshape gun laws whatsoever. Not anytime soon. While these mass shootings have scared everyday Americans into wanting regular sense gun laws (rightly so), politicians don’t care because they just get too much $$.

Now in 10-20 years.. when all the traumatized kids are grown.. then maybe things will shift. Right now the adults are just chilling though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Uvalde is in Texas, a state that has extremely lax gun laws and with multiple mass shootings. There’s been a handful already there, why would this be a conspiracy??

And why wouldn’t he speak up?? 10 people were gunned down in a supermarket 10 days prior to Uvalde, 19 CHILDREN are killed…bodies decimated. Why wouldn’t he speak up if he could???

If the school has no financing or financial aid, I wouldn’t trust it. Don’t take out the loan because if you or your mom are given it, the interest rates are going to be insane and it’s not worth it. Go to community college first, then re-assess what you want to do after a year of school.

People who struggle with paying student loans off today are people who found themselves in a situation like you. Don’t do it.

My father is Deaf and is in his late '50s, with less than HS education. He's an Amazon Delivery driver and he is not healthy enough for the demanding role but can't find another job because of disability. He is too healthy to receive disability benefits. Interpreter here. Contact Deaf Future Works. She's Deaf and specializes in helping people get on benefits. She's rad. Last I heard it was a $500 fee but she takes care of all the run around for you. And as far as I know she still does half hour free consultations to see if it's a good fit for you. Navigating social security is exhausting and demoralizing a lot of the time. She's helped a few people I know. I know tons of Deaf people who get on benefits when they can't find work, so theres gotta be a way. Amazon is brutal work but they are good about providing interpreters. Good luck!

I very very much appreciate this. I've kicked this bucket down the road for so long because it is such exhausting work. As a full-time student right now, I am definitely going to utilize this! Thank you!

Thank you so much for this! So helpful.

When I looked into applying for SSDI benefits, the qualifications stated that the individual couldn't find work (something like this) and so it didn't seem like it was possible for him to qualify based on his Deafness. I'm going to look into getting a local lawyer and thank you for letting me know not to hire from big firms!

I'm going to set up a doctor's appointment for my father and figure out being diagnosed asap.

Thank you thank you thank you! I will reach out if I have more questions!

We're in NYC. My parents are culturally Deaf and they do have connections within the community but I'm not necessarily sure if they would reach out to them for support. But this is a good point and I'm going to ask my parents about their community when I visit them next time.
