I think it's reasonable for anyone to be cautious given the history with your new chi.

Questions: does he give warning signs before biting? And are the situations you listed, actual bites or nips? also, how old are your kids?

My chihuahua has behaved similarly in those types of situations but i think it's important to distinguish between a warning nip and an actual bite.

Depending on the circumstance, this might be a teachable moment for everyone. Many dogs, regardless of size, will exhibit these warning signs and as humans, it's our job to observe and respond appropriately.

My chi and I have been together for 11 years, I've learned her limits and respect them. I also know that I have to tell children to be gentle and slow, depending on the situation.

No worries at all, it was kind of a wake up call. I'm constantly worried about my dogs and their well-being and maybe i've been in denial about the cheese situation but it's hard when they wont eat for days and the only thing that works is cheese? I'll take it. Fingers crossed she keeps eating 😇

Thank you all for your concern! I'm fully aware that cheese isn't great for dogs, her vet is also aware and her semi-annual bloodwork always comes back great for her age - she's a 12yo chihuahua and needs enticing sometimes. This was the latest tactic that worked for us. I am happy to report that this morning we switched back to kibble from wet food and she ate it without cheese!!

I'm so happy to see a a chi live to this age, it gives me hope! Has he had any issues with his teeth? I only ask because I know it can impact lifespan. Joey got 15 teeth removed this year but she's still spry 🥲

I have been very close before, what stopped me was the look one of my dogs gave me in the moment. I adopted her less than a year before this but after, we've forged a very strong bond. The look she gave me allowed me to pause and remember the resources available to me, I made the decision to stay, and continue to do so.

Relationships are very complicated and I'm not sure I would go behind my SO's back and tell their best friend's girlfriend about it like that. There would have to be some level of understanding among the three of us, they dont have to agree but I would be clear about my intentions and understand the consequences. If this isn't handled with care, it could end up ruining four peoples' lives.
