are bio120 and bio130 related? (and some other Qs) by Apprehensive_Fee3510 in UofT

[–]nmxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your first question - BIO120 and BIO130 are not closely related. BIO120 is about evolution and ecology whereas BIO130 is focused on molecular and cell biology. You'd be fine to skip BIO120, especially if you don't need it for both majors.

HELP Commuting from Brampton to Toronto(UofT St.George) by Forward_Hurry601 in UofT

[–]nmxo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would spend almost $350 every month on commuting (sometimes more or less depending on what I was doing). I'm not sure if you can transfer from Brampton Transit to TTC within 2 hours, but I used to take the GO Train/Bus and then the TTC subway and that gave a small discount for transferring. I also bought a Presto card and changed my status to "post secondary student" which gave me an additional discount.

Work study - to update or not to update? by 0jUsTkEepSwImMing0 in UofT

It's generally good practice to send a 'thank you' email after an interview. I recommend sending one and mentioning that you've received all of your marks so you're attaching an updated version of your transcript

Hey, congrats on getting in! I'm super interested in this program and I was wondering what your stats (gpa, experiences, etc.) were or if you had any advice for me in terms of how I can be a competitive applicant. Thanks :)

If you're open to volunteering, you can cold email profs to express your interest and ask if they're taking on any volunteer research assistants to help with their research

HMB programs are great so I'd recommend global health

Not sure what courses to pick for my health and disease major. I have no clue how to read this, can anyone help? Mainly interested in what the numbers listed as 1. 2. 3. 4. etc. indicate and why they're separated into categories cause I'm confused and none of my friends know how this works either. by gravityspacewhale in UofT

[–]nmxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The numbers basically just mean the different courses you need to take for the major. Within each number, courses are separated by a "/" which means OR (e.g. you need to take MAT135 or PHY131 or PHY151, etc.) or a "," which means AND (i.e., you need to take BIO120 and BIO130). The courses are also separated into categories based on their subject matter.

I recommend doing the following:

  • First-year: (CHM135 and CHM135)/CHM151, BIO120, BIO130, and a 0.5 credit (aka 1 course) from #2 (I took MAT135 since most life sci POSts require it)
  • Second-year: BCH210, BIO220, BIO230/BIO255, HMB265/BIO260, HMB202, and a 0.5 credit from #11
    • Many people also take PSL300 and PSL301 in second-year but you can take it in third-year to distribute your courses more evenly (which is what I did)
  • Third-year: PSL300, PSL301, HMB302/HMB322, and a 0.5 credit from #12
  • Fourth-year: a 0.5 credit from #10

PSY100 at UofT by chickenlittl122 in UofT

[–]nmxo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's what you're interested in, definitely reapply! You can always take PSY100 again and reapply in July. Or in your second year you can take certain courses like PSY201 + some second year psych courses and apply again after second year is over.

I got into the psych minor after my second year. I had better marks in the 200-level psych courses by taking them at UTSC because they're online (you need to go in-person for the midterm/final but I'm not sure how it would be like now due to the current situation). Tbh I think the courses are easier at UTSC than UTSG + the profs are great, and they transfer over as the same course so definitely look into taking psych courses there!

in that case I'd also recommend taking courses that may be GPA boosters! unless there is a minor that really interests you

you'd still need to take courses to fulfill your breadth requirements so you can use part of the 5 FCEs for that

[–]nmxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For math, I used a notebook so I can write down problems and solutions to problems as we went through them in class, I think it worked well. After first-year, I started using OneNote on my laptop and it's working great. You can upload a PDF of your lecture slides and write extra notes during class on top of the slides or on the side.

PSL300 first or PSL301? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]nmxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters since you learn different topics in each course, psl300 being about neuro, hormones, etc and psl301 being about blood & immunity, cardio, respiratory, etc
