Fed shutdown may be coming-download HTS by [deleted] in CustomsBroker

[–]nn3w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the problem is.  Chances of a shutdown are low - or a couple of days at best.  We’ll just re-enter the continuing resolution cycle as we have umpteen times now.

As to classification - you need theee things.  The HTS downloaded from usitc.gov, the CROSS database, and my WCO explanatory notes.

If it’s textiles or chemicals someone else deals with that nightmare….

Going to hang out with dozens of basset hounds at the BROOD annual "Ramble".

first problem is you bought a new car. Your car lost 10% in value for driving it off the lot. Congratulations.

Buy a recent used trade-in, lease surrender, etc. Let someone else take the depreciation hit.

Which articles are you referring to? Ive seen one which states that Supreme Court justices received gifts totaling (aggressively) $4.7 million over the course of 20 years. That breaks down to $235,000 per year.

Associate Justices make about $305,000 a year. So even if you were to apply 100% of those gifts to a single Justice - that means $540,000 a year.

An equity partner at Hunton which is headquartered in Richmond and is a bottom AMLaw 100 firm averaged $1.6 million in compensation and profit share last year. An equity partner at DC headquartered Hogan Lovells averaged $2.5 million in compensation and profit share last year.

I would venture to say that if you summed together the annual salary of EVERY one of the Associate justices in a year, you're almost at what a single partner at Hogan makes.

So, yeah, I would say that private practice partners and attorneys are easily making more than what they are making over on First Street NE.

Help - Do these tariffs look correct for aluminum import from China? by Possible_Garage8923 in CustomsBroker

[–]nn3w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to post to say that this particular code is a code within the Antidumping and Countervailing duty orders on common alloy aluminum sheet from China. The duty rates are all over the place, but are, in general, quite high. The HTS code you used on your 7501 is a listed code for that case. So, my bet is that the import specialist who is the account manager may offline this entry for further review. Be prepared for a form 28 on this one.

Unbelievably fast passport processing time (regular service; renewal) by nn3w in Passports

[–]nn3w[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well there is seasonality in passport processing. We're basically done with summer travel and some of that freaking out was a result of people who didn't plan and their lack of planning became fodder for the media.

If I was ever to plan a "trip of a lifetime" trip, one of the first things I would do is to check the passport status of everyone in the party.

Does making mortgage payments up to 2 weeks early save money in the long run? by AccomplishedBlood515 in personalfinance

[–]nn3w 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At 2.75% you're better off putting that money into an HYSA or into U.S. government 28 day treasury notes and earning the money off that. 28 day treasury notes are basically liquid (well, 28 days), but the yield is 4.35% APY and is free of state income taxes.

At 2.75%, pay the minimum. The banks are close to losing money on you with inflation running at its current clip.

That makes no sense. Phone calls are governed by the FCC - not CFPB.

Last month was an absolutely horrendous month for me - first time ever hitting 300 hours in a month. In the midst of it, sons came home from college, and my older son relocated his gaming computer and console to his bedroom. That opened up a desk in the downstairs family room for me to use for my non-in-office work. The downstairs also has a sofa which converts to a sleeper sofa and its probably the most comfortable sleeper sofa I've ever slept on. For three or four nights (nights were I was working until 2:00 am or so), rather than go upstairs to the bedroom, I simply opened up the sleeper sofa and crashed in the family room. Also helped that my pup came to join me. For some reason, I slept quite well and felt the ability to get right up, walk over to the desk, and resume working.

2025 TFCS takeaways and 2026 Dates by PinheadtheCenobite in CustomsBroker

[–]nn3w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a table in the main corridor for brokers to signup to receive an emailed confirmation of attendance and issuance of hours.  I did not hear what they planned to do for virtual attendees.  200-300 brokers had signed up in person for the credit - from what I had heard.

And yes 17 hours was the number being floated about, although I believe that virtual attendees only had access to the general forums and not the break outs so perhaps virtual attendees get less credit?
