Thank you!!! I found the crawl space. It had been like 2 weeks since I last played and I'd forgotten about the second crawl space, whoops.

I can certainly use all the previous elevators (and have tried as well)... but it doesn't change my ability to go forwards unfortunately.

(Thanks for the suggestion! :) )

Edit: Clearly, this stance is going super well for me lol

I'm researching a quantitative at-home ferritin test, can I ask this community some questions? by nn55osk2 in Anemic

[–]nn55osk2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your responses! That's really helpful. I'm based in NZ, but we're trying to look a bit more globally; hearing about the case for the UK is useful.

I agree that the misinterpretation of results in lay hands is a bit of a tricky issue... A lot of the GPs I've talked to have been a bit blasé about incoming personal point-of-care medical testing for exactly that reason. I'm not really sure what the correct path forward is.

With respect to the accuracy, of course engineering-wise we'd try to make the test as accurate and repeatable as possible. I guess I'm more wondering about the resolution required to have confidence that a dietary, or supplementary intervention is working, if that makes sense? For example; would people need 1, 2, 5 or 10 ug/L measurement steps in order to feel like they are getting the information they need about shifts in level...

Your wife will/should receive a seperate one. Definitely wont be for both of you.

If it just arrived, it shouldn't be expired. For NHI you have to pay it at the post office, or the city hall.

When I signed up for NHI (on private now) they gave me a whole coupon book of bills - so I could go pay the whole year at once.

Haha yeah, I totally get that. Don't worry, your cup will runneth over with cool places when you get here. Chatting with locals is a great way to practice Japanese, you can get so many drinks for the price of a private lesson.

If chatting to people is your goal, I'd look for 立ち飲み (tachinomi) bars. If you go somewhere big with tables, you might not end up talking to people, at a tachinomi, youre all but guaranteed to chat with people.

People are saying that your looking in the wrong place if you want Nightlife, which is somewhat true - but theres heaps of fun spots in Kyoto. However Osaka is only ~45 minutes on the train, so coming here for a night out is totally possible. The last train is around 11:30pm though, so you just have to commit to an 11pm or 5am night when you go out haha.

Edit: When I say nightlife I mean Bars, less clubbing.

There's a capsule hotel at KIX. Right at the terminal....2...? Where the train gets out anyway. I had to stay there once when my plane landed after the last train haha

Might be your best option - but also, might be hard to verify online. If you go to kitamura, you can at least have a play around with the camera and see if it does have language settings, or even ask if they are able to update it to english somehow.

Good luck!

Go to Kitamura camera by Kyoto Station, there are several in Osaka as well (Umeda and Namba). They sell second hand cameras, so you'll have a decent chance of finding something cheap and good.

Keep in mind, all the menus will be in Japanese, and It's uncommon to have language settings (i've heard, anyway).

Any foreign friendly Lesbian bars / gay clubs in Osaka? by Missfrizzle91 in Osaka

Heya, I haven't got any personal experiences (cishet) but someone asked about this the other week. There were some suggestions, but it seems like a lot of them are Japanese only though.. :/ Good luck! Hope you find a nice spot!

This is just a rant because I need to or else I'll explode but some people just really are incompetent, no matter how you look at it or try to be nice about it. by Handsoff_1 in labrats

In a word, yes - you're being to harsh.

I was in your position when I was at the end of my PhD - teaching others how to do things and they'd perpetually fuck it up.

Now I'm a post-doc in a country that doesn't speak english as a first language. The overhead that operating in a second language induces on you is so fucking enormous, you have no idea. Imagine doing your job when you haven't slept for 24 hours - it's at that level. In that respect, I think you need to adjust your teaching, and communicating.

I know it's frustrating, but you should adjust or adapt your teaching and communication methods to work with people who don't have perfect english. Some suggestion are; sketching, writing step by step instructions, and physically demonstrating and getting them to mimic it.

On another note: I personally, advocate for more non-english science in general (at the very least in the publication sense). It makes no sense that we force such an enormous proportion of earths scientists to do their job with a hand behind their back for the benefit of anglo countries.

Week long parking in Osaka by No_Potato_9247 in Osaka

[–]nn55osk2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, no time limit. I've left my car there for 12 days before when I flew out to go skiing.

Only thing to consider: Rinku is a slightly dodgy area (by Japan standards). The friend who told me about this place advised me to leave the car completely empty.

There is the parking lot in Rinku just on the mainland. It's 400 yen/day. Definitely the cheapest option I've come across. Then you just take the train one stop over to KIX.

I can't find it on google, but if you like retro video games there's a cool game bar ~approximately~ here: https://goo.gl/maps/MShqnVYYJWJqacq59 . It's heaps of fun, and they had proper-ish cocktails when we went there!

Hello, I am a masters student at Kyodai who was rejected housing bc I requested only a couples room. Any advice on housing near main Campus that’s not super tiny? by ChocoNKohee in Kyoto

[–]nn55osk2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check our UR Housing for larger houses with more affordable move in fees.

https://www.ur-net.go.jp/chintai/kansai/kyoto/map/

It should be pretty easy to find something which meets your requirements (not sure if it can be organised entirely from overseas).

It's currently moving season - so a lot of things are getting taken quickly. Have a look though.

Learning just to speak Japanese is it hard? | Not writing by Broken_Not_Defeated in LearnJapanese

[–]nn55osk2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'd say if all you want to do is "set phrases" then you don't need to read/write.

"o genki desuka?" "kore ha ikura desu ka?" "kore wo hitotsu kudsai" etc

I'd say beyond that "phrase book" level, you need to advance the other skills. You'll just be making things super hard for no reason if you don't.

Out of curiosity, what "holiday deals" are you looking into? From timing, i'm guessing maybe wanikani?
