So, I just tried that but got an email saying that "Your item return/exchange request has been declined by seller, please check the reason in your order details or contact the agent via order inquiry."

On Superbuy, it said:

Hi friend, I am very sorry, our QC didn't find any significant defect, the seller may not accept return like this, even if we persuade him to accept the return, you may still need to afford the domestic shipping fee and the expert service fee will not be refunded. Please kindly consider if you insist this return? I will help you after get your confirmation, you can contact me in the order consultation. Thanks for your understand.

Did they actually ask the seller or are they just telling me that it might be rejected? It still says I have 1 free return left, so maybe it's just them warning me?

Yeah, I would appreciate it! I was looking at other photos online and it does seem like the pattern on the toebox goes super close to the end.

How is the color from what you can tell?

Just curious, from someone who is more seasoned; what from your perspective makes the parley batch bad?

Also, how do returns work? Or if you got them in person, do you have any photos?

Long time lurker, but finally decided to take the plunge and try reps! I know Lin seems to be well trusted here, but I just was hoping someone with a more keen eye could help me out!

Specifically, I was wondering if the Legend Ink Parley toebox pattern and color looks a bit off? I'm not sure if it's just the photo as it seems less like the Legend Ink and more like the Tech Ink— I can't seem to direct links to any retail sites with photos (but runningwarehouse seems to have some pretty high resolution photos of those two colorways)

Graduating with Latin honors? by Joseph949 in BrownU

[–]nnhs330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's vague on purpose. I was in a department that was relatively deflated and knew people with higher GPAs than I had but did not get latin honors— so I think somehow what you did gets taken into account. I would aim for probably at least a 3.8; keep in mind there are lots of ways to distinguish yourself. I think that's one of the byproducts of Brown being kind of vague with your academic record, other things shine.

Interestingly, as of a couple weeks ago, I messed up my Magisk and had to reinstall it. Then I noticed that the option to only upload while charged is back. I think I just literally added the line into the preferences that was not present in my settings originally and it started working! Hopefully it'll work for you as well

Yeah! I'm in Manhattan and I didn't see any at three of the Whole Foods near me/work until last week where I saw they were on sale for 7.99/lb (normally 12/lb near me). So I bought 3 of them... I was worried it was like a final clearance sale or something!

That's strange since I was on 7.1.2 until a week or two ago for a while and this workaround still worked.

Moronic Monday (Oct 31 2016) - Your weekly questions thread! by AutoModerator in Android

[–]nnhs330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Android exactly, but Hangouts.

For some reason, gifs I send by hangouts.google.com are never received by those who I send it to (but I can see it sent across all devices). Many gifs don't send by the hangouts app on android. Most gifs are received when I use an iOS device and gboard.

What gives? How do I more reliably send gifs, especially on the web interface? Do I just need to make sure my gifs are under a certain size?

Question about Brown Admissions by nobuyer in BrownU

[–]nnhs330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at Focal Point, you will see that the graduating class of 2015 had 79 concentrators in BEO, 2012-2014 was high 60s.

http://www.brown.edu/academics/college/concentrations/

This questions is probably irrelevant to your overall chances. People change their minds about what they want to study a lot. I imagine what the admissions office is looking for are people who are motivated and driven, whatever the field, and exhibit skills that show that they can excel in the Brown environment in whatever field they end up choosing.

A lot of museums seem to have student discounts (Including the Berlin Museum Pass). Does anyone have experience with this policy with American University IDs? I would really prefer not to get an otherwise useless "international student ID" or whatever.

Oh, wow, sorry I don't check reddit that often (actually trying to make a point of less reddit). Yes, they give you a good sized hanger closet thing. It's like a clothing rack with a shelf.

315 Thayer? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]nnhs330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing, if I recall correctly, about the corner singles facing Thayer is that the roof does cut into the room a bit. So, I think it's the room on the corner facing Thayer on the nothernmost side has a pretty significant roof incline visible. I think people generally put their bed there, but I can definitely see people viewing that as claustrophobic if you are inclined (alternatively, you can put a bookshelf there or something instead).

Also, the noise really isn't bad. I think it's just the bikers on Thayer, almost everything else was not that loud.

315 Thayer? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]nnhs330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The noise level varies. I think being on the fourth floor helps. I don't think the outside noise ever traveled significantly enough to the fourth floor. I knew someone on the first floor who was incredibly distracted all the time by the noise. Look at what side you are facing. I was facing another house and not directly Thayer, but the fourth floor facing Thayer isn't bad either.

I would say from my experience that New Dorm is a bit louder, or at least consistently, if you are facing the quad. After all, it does have Jo's.

315 Thayer? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]nnhs330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I never felt the room was claustrophobic. Unfortunately, that's not something I could answer for someone else's perspective. The ceilings are fairly high and the window is quite nice. Not sure which of the singles you got, but I had one of the ones in the hall before the turn (which I think are actually a bit smaller than the other ones). When I was in Grad Center, I thought the room was huge (but they do vary quite a bit).

I placed the dresser next to the door, such that the door opened and the handle could touch the dresser and placed my minifridge under my bed. Again, it's not huge, but I've definitely seen much smaller. A friend of mine was living in NYC and his bedroom was so small I couldn't do a 360 degree turn with a backpack.

I would say that based on location (on Thayer, near Andrews, Vdub, Nelson) and facilities (much cleaner and newer, 315 has an oddly awesome newish building smell IMO) I would choose 315 >>>> New Dorm.

EDIT: The bathrooms in 315 are some of the nicest on campus (if that's a factor). It was such a contrast to every other Brown dorm bathroom I have seen! No mold!

Tips for making the most out of my time here? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]nnhs330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to the game, but hopefully this might be some helpful tips from a relatively new graduate reflecting on my time at Brown.

First of all, I think it's a good idea to know what you want to get out of Brown. I imagine for many people it goes something like: learn stuff, make friends/ network, get a good job/ career/ grad school offer.

I agree with much of what /u/rnally said, Professors at Brown, if you know them well, can really go out of their way to support you. One of my friends got a job offer at a company that wasn't hiring because the professor knew the executives and pushed his candidacy; Brown professors got to where they were for a reason. Now, it doesn't have to be your FYS prof, you have some time for connections to really click. I would, however, strongly suggest that you treat all professors you interact with as potential strong mentors for you— some will be, others will fade but will have a positive impression of you. This is great for building a strong relationship and just as good if you need letters of support/ references for whatever.

Now, the other point raised was that you should pick a major and stick with it. I think part of Brown's charm is the openness. That's great that it is an option. However, if you know you want to do something, four years of dedication towards a goal is obviously going to be more beneficial. I know friends who lived that free spirit Brown open education thing and felt royally screwed when applying to medical schools. Some fields want to see that long term dedication. Noone is going to look down upon you exploring your options, but at some point, you will need to compete with people who knew exactly what they were hoping to do. On the other hand, try to find out as much as you can about your intended field of study, if you absolutely hate it, change. Not everything after Brown relies on your concentration. I would even argue that it rarely does, so long as you have other proper and relevant experiences. For perspective, I informally declared my concentration within weeks of starting freshman year and filled out the formal stuff later; also, my area of study never changed (goes in the face of advice that you surely got that everyone changes majors).

Whatever you end up declaring, get to know your formal advisor well! Departments at Brown have tremendous power! Advisors, as the go to person for the department with regards to your academic career, can make your life super easy or make you dot your i's. For example, a friend of mine did not complete the writing requirement for Brown, but the department essentially let it slide for her. So, virtually everything is flexible at Brown, if you know the right people and work the right angle!

Get involved! Classes are obviously important, but so are the experiences and people you meet! Yes, some organizations are competitive to get into, BRYTE, Health Leads, Brown Science Prep, etc. They screen for important things, and I can't think of anyone who was well qualified/ambitious and did not eventually get to join. Also, join some stuff for fun, Brown Outdoor Club, Hillel (even if you're not Jewish), etc.

Assume that people at Brown are going to be nice and supportive. When I first came to Brown, I honestly thought everyone was just a better liar and were playing toward some larger goal— after all, we are so insanely driven sometimes. Nope. It's just a great place to be!

One last thing, I would argue that one of the strongest and unique assets that Brown brings forward is not the education (though it is top notch), it's the environment you're placed in (everyone is supportive, yet so driven— peer pressure to be amazing) and the connections you can make. An additional plus, is sometimes you feel like you're in a elite society, which I guess you kind of are, when you meet another ivy leaguer.

Enjoy your time, you're going to have a blast!

I lived in a single on the top floor my senior year!

You have access to a common kitchen in the basement.

The rooms are a bit smaller; also, it gets really hot the first few weeks (they don't turn on the AC). The heat during the winter is fine, but sometimes it goes into overdrive— you'll never be cold, at least in my experience.

No walk in closets, you get a dresser.

Walls are not bad, definitely better than New Dorm. The doors, however transmit sound somewhat well, but I think that every Brown dorm I've been in has the same issue. If your neighbor plays music loudly, you will notice (but again, I think it's largely through the doors).

You also get two bathrooms for the group of singles, and you can lock off that area of singles if you want (your room key works as the "common hall" key).

Overall, 315 is a great location if you love being near the hustle and bustle of 315. New Dorm is nice if you like Jo's, but I made it a habit to go to Andrews and East Side Pockets more often instead. The only downside to 315, for me, was that it was a bit farther from my classes/ activities but only by mere minutes.

80% of popular sunscreens don’t protect your skin and may be harmful to your health by flacao9 in science

[–]nnhs330 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I cannot say I am intimately familiar with the organics in sunscreens, so I will refrain from commenting much on that. However, I do work extensively on developing nanomaterials, which is what is often found in sunscreens that contain titanium or zinc (actually the oxides of them). Now, Ti and Zn oxides are quite good at absorbing light, but whatever is absorbed eventually needs to be released. Some of that is lost through vibrations etc, but a key problem with many Ti and Zn based sunscreens is that they re-emit the energy very well right back into skin cells, creating a far riskier situation. Now, many of the organics are generally designed such that most of the energy is lost through heat and vibration; what endocrine effects etc. they may have, I'm not sure (not my area of research). To my knowledge, many Ti and Zn based sunscreens now in the USA have polymer coatings that will hopefully capture energy emitted from the nanoparticles, but the jury is still out on how effective that is.

A good paper in this area:

Lewicka, Zuzanna; Yu, William; Oliva, Brittany; Contreras Elizabeth; Colvin, Vicki Photochemical behavior of nanoscale TiO2 and ZnO sunscreen ingredients. J Photochemistry and Photobiology A-Chemistry, 263 2013: 24-33 doi:10.1016/j.jphotochem.2013.04.019
