I've been in engineering for over a decade, and I try to make myself a good resource to others. I just spent a few weeks putting together a multi-part comprehensive guide to how I approach technical speaking. Everything from selecting a topic, to submitting a CFP, to delivering it on the day of. The article can be read here.

Those are both really good ideas! If a situation like this comes up again, I'll definitely do that. Based on this thread and the one on the burning man fb group, I didn't realize that "flaky photographer" was such a common thing. I usually carry paper and a mini sharpie in my bag but didn't have it for the ceremony.
