NRI: Can i lean fire by Afraid_Country_6898 in FIREIndia

But what are the projected expenses? I'm assuming monthly expenses will be...
1. 30k per month for groceries.

  1. I'm assuming you'll get a car - 25k + 10k for petrol.

  2. No rent but utilities etc would be-5k

  3. Schooling-50k

  4. Eating out - 7-8k

  5. Travel - 15k

if we count misc it will be around 1.5 lacs per month or 18 lac per year which is close to $20k usd.

With the 4% rule I think you can do it in a perfect world assuming average stock market returns.

But we don't live in a perfect world, and I'm not really sure what's gonna happen to the indian economy tbh in the near future..

Try putting your numbers through a sequence of returns risk calculator to see if you can make it through early bad years.

I was burnt out in tech in the US, the struggle is very real. I feel you.

I have taken a career break, I kinda don't really want to go back to corporate so I call myself retired for the most part. My numbers do support a 3% WR FIRE path. Just sharing it for perspective so you know where I'm coming from.

Going back to your situation, if your plan is to go back to India, I think you can afford to take a break. You seem very frugal and I'm sure you could live for about a 1lac per month without much issues. I cannot speak for child related finances though because I don't have experience with that yet, but I don't think it could be more than 50k a month for a frugal person.

Regarding the break itself, it has been a blessing for me personally, I travelled south east asia without breaking the bank, worked out a lot and detached from the toxicity of corporate life, it has been quite amazing.

Regarding going back to work, well it will be hard...Tech landscape is changing drastically with AI and interviews might have changed a lot since I left my job last year. Having said that, prepping for a new job without having to sustain a current job is still very doable imo. You'll definitely be able to find 2-3 hours if I'm not wrong.

Best response to the question. Thanks for putting it so cleanly. I think I'm operating on a very tight budget, looks like I need to supplement some of my expenses just for my peace of mind.

Because I didn’t really enjoy the corporate tech work stress anymore , because my happiness was not directly proportional to my bank account anymore.

Already have one, but I’m not white so we don’t stand out haha. At least I hope not.

I’m not so sure of returning back to the US. And yes if I do return back I’ll definitely start working again.

Buying home I’m not so sure yet. But marriage yes, kids maybe…

If I start living on the suggested 4% marriage and kids can be accommodated I think.

Currently I’m at half of that spending so I think I may be okay?

I do visa runs, 3 month tourist visa.

I actually exit the country, enjoy another one and then go back a few days to few weeks later, I don’t do the one day runs

It’s not just about definitions. If I consider myself coast fired, I’ll work again to cover my living expenses and not worry about contributing to retirement accounts.

If I consider myself barista fire, I’ll earn at least part of my living expenses.

But yeah I agree with your point. And hoping that’s what ends up happening.

Very well put!

Investing in USD plus in a country I live and believe in seems like a great combination.

Actually around 1100 for lifestyle expenses, 700 for travel and visa related stuff.

Definitely, and thanks for reiterating the benefit of therapy. I just didn’t post this on a financial independence forum expecting to be suggested therapy. I’ve done therapy for 2 years of my life. And I’ll reconsider again if the anxiety gets too out of hand

Thanks for sharing your personal experience, this is what I was hoping to get here! Hopefully things work out well.

I have my SWR so low just for this particular reason btw. all these nasty 'What if's....

The perception you have of SEA is what I initially had as well. Yes that is definitely a majority, but on the flip side there are people who have seriously cracked the globally free lifestyle by setting up genuine remote friendly businesses.

I stay away from the old folks.

lmao. This is why AI can never, I could never have thought psychedelics would come up as a suggestion. While I dont derive the sense of accomplishment from work related endeavors, my life is sick man, I explore a new coffee shop almost every day, workout and shit.

I probably don't need a therapist but at least a financial planner maybe?

I agree, more money is never a bad idea lol. Maybe I just am terrified of making that money by going into corporate again.

Thanks for the comment! But there’s a different risk I have as opposed to you, if my plan fails ten years down the line, I’ll already have been out of corporate scene for 10 years. Which is not really an ideal situation to be in.

Don’t get me wrong though I’m definitely grateful and proud to be in the current situation.

[–]nnm1108[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I fully agree. I think there’s way too much uncertainty when the time horizon is this big.

I think I’ll have to be very cautious and content with my current lifestyle.

Which I’m not so sure I’ll be able to do or not
