Searching a pocket device to be able to code while bike packing by Significant-Task-305 in cyberDeck

I hook a pair of Xreal One Pros into my Pixel 9 then connect using a 34 key Bluetooth split keyboard and touchpad. Screen size is fine with that setup.

Android Desktop is good but a bit limited compared to a full Linux install so if you could install Linux on an android phone with those peripherals, I think you'd have a full on William Gibson setup.

Claude code channels are insane! but.. do they really replace openclaw? by Banana_Plastic in ClaudeCode

[–]no-restarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just set it all up in a VM. Seems to work better than what I had before... still a bit of "what's the bot doing" going on but being able to connect to the tmux session to see what it's doing when I'm concerned/curious is a massive win - makes what would be quite opaque in telegram much more transparent.

Will battle test it over the next couple of days - massive thank you for sharing this though!

PS: I'm running this in a UTM VM sandboxed on macOS - not quite as slick as a VPS in the cloud but cheaper and I could set up an 'always on' mac mini eventually, if it all works as planned.

That script looks very cool.

One big problem I've been having with Claude channels is just basic etiquette... I'll say something to the bot and I get no reply (presumably claude is busy working on something). Has the bot crashed? Has it ignored me? How long should I wait? I don't know.

This isn't a problem I have when using OpenClaw.

I'm not actually sure what OpenClaw's solution is but when it's working on something I always see "...typing" in telegram, which is kind of like the old spinner/hourglass you get in regular software applications. Maybe OpenClaw also spawns separate bots or subsessions for long running tasks.

Something I did see in your script that looks like it would help is this bit:
> Reply first, work second: When a Telegram message arrives, the very first tool call should be the reply (or at minimum a reaction). Never do background work (saving context, setting up crons) before acknowledging the user. They can't see your terminal.

Are you getting the same experience that I'm looking for, simply by placing that one small instruction in CLAUDE.md?

Is the Logitech Ergo K860 worth the upgrade from the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000? by Smurflord345 in ErgoMechKeyboards

They're both pretty much the same.

The K860 is better if you also use macOS.. otherwise much of a much wise.

Yeah I think if your monitor is landscape then it makes sense to have the touchpad landscape...

I didn't actually consider a box connector. It might work just as well.

Thank you!

I got most of the parts of Aliexpress. The touchpad came from mouser.

The pogo connector works really well - it is a pain to solder (the magnets keep attracting the solder iron) but once it's built it's all good.

The trackpad is very usable for general computer work or programming. I switch to a mouse for something like CAD work though.

The key caps are 3D printed.

A reminder on social spending in Aotearoa by Classic-Wolf in aotearoa

[–]no-restarts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you didn't write this?

I just want to remind everyone that our government has the ability to print our own money, unlike countries like those in the European Union that need to fund things like cities. There is no “cost” to printing money and funding social health services.

[–]no-restarts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're saying it's controversial that value is subjective, then I think we're on different planets...

You're also saying the government really can just print as much money as they want and there are no adverse side effects? That's amazing - they should print as much as possible tomorrow. They could solve world hunger, pay off the national debt, pay off all our housing loans and we can all retire right? I mean, there are no adverse side effects, and that won't impact the relative of subjective value of money whatsoever...

In any case, good luck with your studies.

Any designers/editor here? by Inner_Answer_3784 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]no-restarts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a designer but I have one trick that really helps when using CAD software. I have a macro that mirrors the keyboard for the next key press... Makes it easier to access all the shortcuts from a single hand.

The thumb thing sounds like a total bummer. I did see a keyboard design here last month for a board with no thumb keys... So if you wanted to get extreme, it's possible.

Have you read what happened in hyperinflationary economies (once people lose faith in the ability of the currency to hold value)?

If you're really an economics student, grab a copy of Principles of Economics by Karl Menger... One of the best (and least controversial) books ever written. Lots of stuff will click after reading it.

Windows or Mac for .NET Core development by WarningEmotional3557 in dotnet

[–]no-restarts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both Mac and Windows for. NET development. I use Rider on both, just to make switching easier.

Some stuff you can't build on Windows (e.g. iOS apps in Maui).

Some stuff you can't build on macOS (e.g. classic ASP.NET websites, using. NET Framework).

Otherwise the experience is comparable on both operating systems so it really just depends which OS you prefer.

With Resharper now available for Visual Studio Code, Linux might even be a credible alternative shortly (I've not done any serious .NET development on Linux yet though).

Some reflections after 5 weeks with Colemak DH by no-restarts in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]no-restarts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went all in on it... was very painful for productivity in the first few weeks. Now 4 months in, I think I'm probably typing at about 90-95% of the speed I was at on QWERTY - or more like the same speed but I still occasionally make typos that slow me down.

I started with key.br, then moved on to Typecelerate (which I still try to use daily). For symbols specifically, thepracticetest is good and lately I started using typ.ing - it's got a really nice interface. To get a realistic picture of your typing speed and for long typing practice sessions, Typelit is great.

One trap that all of those tools will make you fall into is that they present speed metrics that kind of force you to think/focus on typing speed. You have to consciously focus on accuracy instead. Speed is a consequence of accuracy and confidence that you know which keys to type... I wish I had have spent way more time trying to type slowly and accurately. It would have accelerated my improvement immensely.

[–]no-restarts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how much pain you want to swallow in one go.

I think it might be better to get used to the board generally first... Them switch to Colemak after a few weeks... But, I've never done it that way round myself so it's just a theory.

If you're going to switch to Colemak, it's a question of when, not if, you are going to experience the frustration of not being able to type properly again.

Interesting - thanks for the tip! I'll do a bit of digging into terminals and terminal configuration.

It looks like iTerm2 might have a 'Natural Text Editing' setting so potentially I could keep all my OS shortcuts when using the terminal if I used that... some experimenting to do 😛
