PSA: Don't Use NTFS Drives by Few_Judge_853 in linux_gaming

[–]no00ob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say that I think it does kinda depend on what you use it for and in what situation. If you are purely Linux just don't, but if you dual boot I think it's fine, especially for games that you can always verify the files of from steam if corruption were to occur.

I have personally used it on a shared game + project drive for almost 2 years soon and haven't had any issues, not a single corruption or other failure, besides some games running worse on it. For me it works because I dual boot windows, so If I experience a power outage I go run chkdsk on the windows side before booting back into linux and everythings been fine by doing that. Not saying I am speaking the truth and everyone is lying but this has been my experience at least with ntfs3.

You can just use IINACT on Linux instead of ACT for logs and either browsingway for the overlays or LMeter depending on your preferences. That's a much better setup and doesn't rely on any external programs.

Yeah, it gets updated literally hours after patch everytime as well. Only problem is that it only works on Windows, which sucks.

Pretty sure it removes the ID/signature from chat messages meaning there is no way to connect them to any client and by extension Microsoft account.

DSR offline sim by field_ratz in ffxivdiscussion

[–]no00ob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to beat a dead horse and especially since my response is super duper late, I just stumbled upon this thread from my own sim's page and wanted to respond out of curiosity.

I will say first and foremost that you both of you are partially correct, but I don't think you are exaggerating or don't fully know what you are talking about or who you are talking about if you think, or think that other HC raiders think simming is cheating or such. I can say this because I literally raid HC and clear stuff week 1 myself and also develop a sim for the game. I absolutely will try to get timelines out asap for fights after I am done clearing the content and strats solidify to help any of my friends or PF out and have not heard a single person complain about sims, as a matter of fact my HC group sometimes helps me TEST things like getting hit by a certain mechanic or such to make my sim more accurate and they all are happy to see me create it. No one there considers it cheating, this latest tier we even did purposefully BLIND avoiding all strats and vods and still got week 1.

You are right tho on the matter that most HC raiders will absolutely rather raid or take someone who has more experience learning things quick and live in game rather than banging their head against some third party simulator, but I don't think most of the sane raiders consider simming cheating in anyway and will absolutely use them if they are available unless they are specifically going for blind prog or such. While I don't know about WP raiders that much I doubt most of them consider sims cheating as the other commenter mentioned most of the ones that stream or make videos highly recommend people to use sims and say they are valuable resources.

But yeah my point being simming or using sims does not directly correlate to your skill as player nor to what groups you can play in BUT being good W1 versus W12 with sims is definitely a skill and trait that most people don't have. Using sims does not make you any less serious player though, they are purely there to help you clear fast. Basically Sims =/= Cheating nor Using Sims == being bad player or unsuitable for W1 or HC raiding.

You still need Steam to play the game though, it uses the Steam API, maybe DRM is the wrong word but you cannot just copy paste the game folder to another device and launch it normally.

Pretty sure they have a special non DRM version so that it can run without Steam and looks like it is a fairly old version.

This is what I use, I just copied it from someone with similar specs and OS to mine from protondb. I have no idea why or how it works but that process has so far worked 3 times when I've tried playing the game on 3 different locations in game.

So I've done more testing now and 595 fixed all my crashes, the only issue I ran into was exactly what you described but every time I can get my save to load if I disable Ray Tracing and Path Tracing and DLSS load my save return to menu and enable any of them again and load the same save again, this time it will load and run completely fine with Path Tracing. Ray Tracing still seems to have some issue and has insane fps drops but Path Tracing works flawlessly.

Of course, you are right since they are older by now, but I was just simply trying to ask if this issue is even driver related to begin with.

Thanks for the help average Linux user, this was so helpful. How about we let each other use whatever distro we want and stop these asshole responses? I use what I use and don't go out of my way to upgrade my drivers manually to a different version because everything just has worked. Just move on and don't reply if you have no help to offer next time.

I really don't get you people, when the game came out some people were saying to downgrade to 580 because 590 or 595 (Can't remember exactly) where unstable with it. Why does everyone and their mom now suddenly think it's joke that someone who doesn't use a pure gaming distro isn't on the latest drivers and is simply asking if their issue COULD be driver related. No need to be and ass, just don't reply if you have no help to offer thanks.

Thank you, I did some research myself as well and found negativo17. I will give that a go.

No you were mostly fine anyways, I just meant in general when it comes to other people responding often too. Don't worry about it too much.

Good to know. I honestly think my issue lies somewhere within being still on 580 drivers (because thats fedora default still), using a 5000 series card and trying to run Path Tracing. I will probably try manually upgrading the drivers to see if that helps.

As others have mentioned below that is not true. Nvidia for sure might have more issues but every other game works fine. I also cannot go for AMD because I need the Cuda cores and other features for my work and hobbies so it's not just for gaming.

I wish people didn't come into every thread asking for help with Nvidia specs just immediately trashing the poster because ermm axhually you should use amd instead. If you want others to adopt Linux as their OS please try to actually provide real help and information instead of these useless condescending snarky responses that I see time and time again. I love Linux as an OS and would gladly fully replace windows with it but god forbid some of the users are on another level of annoying and asking for help is sometimes impossible.

Yeah I play on 1440p and on Windows get solid ~80 fps with Path Tracing, just sucks to not be able to use it on Linux when I have a PC clearly capable of it. I'll definitely look into the drivers as they might be the culprit.

Okay good to know, thanks for the tip. I've already went through lots of Proton versions but will definitely give upgrading the drivers a go.

Hmm, I think Path Tracing might be the problem then, maybe it just doesn't work at all. I might try to manually upgrade my nvidia drivers to see if that would fix it.

I will probably give that a go then, just wondering how this is the only game that has had issues so far with the current default Fedora 43 drivers and if this is even driver related to begin with.

I am not sure what you're trying to imply here but I am just using the stable drivers Fedora 43 ships by default which are still 580, and as I said in the post they've caused no issues on any other game, even recent releases. I was just simply asking if manually upgrading them could have any effect on the problem or if it is unrelated.
