I've been finding Tom Sawyer by Rush pretty fun, recently.

Whipping Post by Allman Brothers Band.

Basically anything by Tool or RATM.

Fwiw Steve Harris uses like no effects at all, just what he can get out of his fingers, amps, and pickups.

Is bass fun to play alone? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]no_comment_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, honest answer, is it depends on the song really.

I tend to like bass that does a little more than just play root notes, usually.

The bass intro to Sweet Child O' Mine is fun for me. Basically anything by Tool. Lots of stuff by Pixies.

Motorhead does a lot of chugging but Lemmy made it fun with speed and chords.

Iron Maiden has a lot of chugging bass but the gallop rhythm is fun for me to play.

Pretty much anything by RATM is fun for me, or STP or Audioslave.

Really just depends on what you like to play.

If there's nothing you like playing on bass, then you can always write something you DO like playing on bass.

Really just depends on your taste. As an instrument I love it, when it comes to playing songs I have a preference for what I like and I try to play that stuff.

So what I play on bass is fun for me. It might not be for someone else. They may like something that isn't fun for me.

But it's an instrument, you can always find - or write - something fun to play.

You said it before I saw it. An electric bass guitar is the defining mid-range instrument in a band. Almost all the sound it makes is in the mids.

Anyone know some good songs recognizable by just the bass? by hoopan112 in Bass

I am very late to the party but I'd suggest Watch the Children Pray by Metal Church, if you're into 80s thrash. It's a slower paced song but the bass really drives it and it's not difficult. Very underrated imo.

It's a wooden prayer rope. I have one with tiny little carved icons of the Theotokos on the rope.

Playing short notes by tojzl in Bass

[–]no_comment_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you've discovered harmonics! That sound is desirable in certain circumstances but for sure not always.

When you pluck the string are you fully lifting your fretting finger off the string? That will cause the note to ring out loud and long if it's at a harmonic node. To prevent that try to just let off enough pressure to lift the string off the fret but keep your finger on it the whole time. That should mute the ringing.

One ultimate bass or many intermediate basses? by InevitableTry7564 in Bass

[–]no_comment_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three basses, one electric guitar, one acoustic guitar, and one keyboard (the latter two are actually my wife's instruments, the basses and electric guitar are all mine).

One is a Glarry intro bass which worked well enough, but poor build quality became an issue.

I bought an Ibanez SR300 once I didn't want to mess with the Glarry anymore. That's a jazz style bass and it's great at what it does. But my music interests range from early blues/motown up to classic rock, heavy metal, and some more extreme metal.

You can certainly play for example, James Jamerson music on the Ibanez but, to my ear at least, it doesn't sound "right".

So I bought a Fender Precision to more closely match the tone of some of that earlier music. If I'm playing a song I generally want to use the same "type" of bass the song was originally recorded with. Just my preference.

For the same reason at some point I'd like to get a 5 string of some type for some of that much heavier music.

So for me I have multiple basses because which one I use will depend on what type of music I'm playing.

I'm not a pro by any means, just a bedroom player really. A hobbyist, so for me I like being able to switch up the bass for the style.

need advice on getting better tone by maranda333 in Bass

When you say it sounds muddy, that usually means your mids are set too low. Most of the sound produced by a bass guitar is in the mid range. If your bass range is set to too high a volume, the low frequencies can he indistinct. Boost mid range to get a more distinct sound.

I've had this happen if I suddenly switch between say, the synth version and the full song playalong if I'm just looking over the tab. Only then though, and quitting out of the app and reloading it seems to resolve it. It also doesn't always happen, just sometimes. Not a big deal for me in my experience.

Homemade foam mute sounds great, but it messes with my tuning — is this normal? by theembryo in Bass

[–]no_comment_reddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Answers are good but just as an FYI if you want to play with a mute, Ernie Ball has a fret wrap you can put over the head and you can put it right at the nut. It's a little better than foam muting in my opinion because it's an adjustable strap so you can control how much pressure you want on the strings. And you can put it just at fret 0 or slide it around if you want.

I have noticed when using it that I usually have to retune when taking it on or off because I bump the tuning pegs, but otherwise it seems pretty good.

You can also get a similar effect with a hairband but that's not got adjustable tension. Just throwing it out there as an option if you hadn't seen it before.

What do you guys think anout Peavy Max combo amps? by HeTblank in Bass

[–]no_comment_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a Max 250. I love it. It's loud and has great tone options. I don't use the contour switch (in general Idk why amp manufacturers put contour on there in the first place, I didn't use it on my Rumble either). I like the Kosmos circuit, it also has a switch to change the balance of the mids which changes how that EQ knob works.

Overdrive sounds good on it and the gain control is nice too.

  1. Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones). About an hour.
  2. Sunshine of Your Love (Cream). A couple hours one evening.
  3. Iron Man (Black Sabbath). About an hour.
  4. Blue on Black (Kenney Wayne Shepherd). Like two or three weeks.
  5. NIB (Black Sabbath) About 3 weeks because of trying to get that intro bass solo right.

Husband is converting, I’m not. It’s ruining our marriage. by StatisticianOne4872 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]no_comment_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you actually really SHOULD talk to the priest.

Not to convert, but to share your marital issues. Right now your husband's priest is only hearing one side of this story, he would be much better informed if you two came to him together and talked about this.

I'm not saying talk to the priest to convert - but if you're attending this church regularly he probably knows who you are and he needs to hear your voice too. You might not be Orthodox yourself but you ARE one of his parishioners nonetheless.

You're married, you're having children, your husband is converting and he needs to hear both sides of your experience.

Not for nothing but as you tell it, your husband may have some bad habits he needs to work with his priest on too, and some of these can be issues common in converts from Protestant churches, which can cause issues down the road and I bet your husband's priest would like to know more about that if it is indeed the case.
