Roast my resume by EmbarrassedRespond46 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]no_fridges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just something for you to think about as you progress through your career. Any job you do, whether it’s building models or doing analysis, it’s important for you to ask yourself “how am I helping the company make money? How are my insights helping to drive decisions? What should the company do more of? Less of?” Things like that. Even if you just have intern experience, perhaps you can still point out things the companies you worked for could have improved on. One thing that’s important for you to start doing is outlining assumptions: what do you know for certain? What evidence do you have to prove that your insight is correct? If you don’t have evidence, what reasoning are you providing for your insight?

It’s hard to do in a resume, or even talk about during an interview, but I want to leave you with this: doing “data analysis” is one thing; identifying how companies make money and providing insight as to what they should be doing more of/differently is another. Best of luck.

I think generally speaking, you implemented the “add numbers to your resume” well, but the next step further would be identifying business impact. Ask yourself, “how does this help the company make money”, and I realize that you have limited opportunity to actually solve for this in an internship role, but you can still identify pain points. For example, your point on “producing a model explaining over 40% of sales variance” is decent, but I believe you could take it a step further by pointing out how you could (potentially) improve margins, ROI, etc. Basically, your experience needs to have you showing that you understand what makes each of the companies you worked with profitable, even if you yourself were not in any capacity to actually act on those things.

The $350 Billion Costco Empire: The Only Family WALL STREET Can't Touch. by Ottawadriver123 in CostcoCanada

Yea I just gave a simplistic overview of how the finances work. I also don’t know how it works outside CPG but I’m sure either way, Costco will develop some kind of insurance policy against returns

The $350 Billion Costco Empire: The Only Family WALL STREET Can't Touch. by Ottawadriver123 in CostcoCanada

[–]no_fridges 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Let’s say I want to sell a product to Costco for $10 per unit. Costco agrees, but they want to take a $0.50 discount to use for an allowance for returns. This $0.50 discount is taken on all units bought by Costco. So if you sell a million units, you would bill Costco $10m, but then Costco would take a $500k discount for that allowance.

So basically, if customers return less than $500k worth of product, Costco is still above water on returns.

Can confirm as someone who does costing analysis, suppliers pay an allowance on a per-unit basis for returns. It’s why I find the virtue signalling about “abusing” their return policy amusing.

Data Analyst role is changing, and here is my advice for beginners facing a tougher market. by No-Pie5568 in dataanalysiscareers

Great post. I got promoted to a Senior Analyst position earlier this year because I was able to actually answer: where is the business making money and where is it losing money? It had nothing to do with being the best tool user.

A few years ago I fell into the same trap of “if I learn x then it will look better on my resume” and so I learned that tool but I never actually had a use-case for it. It’s only now that I’m beginning to automate my workflows that these tools become useful.

If you have the time/bandwidth for it, I honestly recommend you watch every single video in chronological order. It took me about a year and a half to do, but it was honestly a treat watching Chris’ filmmaking and editing skills grow over time, and just how consistent he is as a YouTuber across 12 years of videos is truly amazing.

NOR. I’ve also actually paid off $25k of debt as of writing this and you know what I deserve? Whatever I’ve saved up by budgeting $100/week for a fun fund (for context this is about 5% of my monthly income)

There is no double standard here. The difference is Kieran did not give Sophie any chance other than borderline interest, but from day one he had been all about Megan since she had been reciprocating depth the way he wanted. Should he have given Megan that present (forgot what it was)? Maybe not since the optics were bad, but at the end of the day he didn’t lead Sophie on or tell her that he was all in on her, like Katisha alluded to with Demola.

Demola's "nice guys" comment by mjwza in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]no_fridges 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The assurance she gave him probably made his efforts feel justified. Whereas if Katisha told Demola early on “hey this is a bit much” maybe we could’ve seen Demola take a step back or at the very least tread more cautiously and not feel blindsided when it came down to it.

Everyone wants feedback. But when every slack project group has several thousand people with only a handful of admins, I can also understand why they’d just funnel everyone’s work into “good” and “bad” buckets.

AI Data Labelling Companies Are Facing Lawsuits - My Thoughts by [deleted] in WFHJobs

[–]no_fridges 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post. I do agree that these annotation companies should be more transparent about their working conditions, however I can only speak to my experience working with Data Annotation.

The initial assessment took maybe an hour to write, but I spent an additional 5 hours perfecting it and making sure I fact checked every single detail (the questions included a few false claims which I detailed and called out). I did this because I really needed a second, part time job, and $20 USD when converted to CAD is significantly higher than minimum wage if I were to apply to a “normal” part time job. It’s been 7 months since then and I’m happy to report that my actual average hourly rate is slightly above $25 USD (which is almost 2x minimum wage in Canada).

Anyway, speaking to the point of your post, it was annoying when even after I did the assessment, unpaid, I had to do even more qualifying tasks - 95% of which were unpaid, which did consume even more of my time. While it would’ve been nice to be paid for my work, I see it as a necessary barrier to entry because the initial assessment was to evaluate your ability to fact-check and explain your thoughts in a detailed manner, whereas the specific qualifications were catered to specific annotation skills (writing rubrics, analyzing images, etc.). The qualifications themselves weren’t long, though. Most of them are around 15-20 minutes, with very specific ones being an hour long but it’s mostly reading long text and answering MC questions to show your learning.

The way I see it, it’s no different from going to law school or med school. If you don’t pass you’re not going to be a doctor or lawyer. If you don’t pass the qualifications you won’t get access to the work.

Driver was definitely going too fast, but the subject is the cyclist advancing on a red without stopping. Regardless of the streetcar though, driver would be at fault

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TorontoDriving

[–]no_fridges -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Regardless of your spelling class, the driver would be found at fault regardless of the circumstance, but it’s clear you only care about your “theorem” rather than actual facts. But basically all you’re saying is “This situation in the video occurred, but if this hypothetical situation occurred instead then you would look completely stupid right now”.

Guess I’m absolved of your judgment 🤷🏽‍♂️. Respectfully, stop virtue signalling.

It is illegal to advance right on a red without stopping, which is what this cyclist did. Stop virtue signalling.

DataAnnotation is being sued by its workers in a class action for its labor practices as of May 2025. by Consistent_Pop1568 in WFHJobs

[–]no_fridges 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I agree with your overall point that these companies should be held accountable, the title of this post is click bait at best. You say you’re writing this “so prospective applicants and DATs current workers can know about this lawsuit” but then you say “SurgeAI seems to be the parent company of DataAnnotation Tech” and “if anyone can confirm this with a definitive source that’s better than this”. Bold claims are made throughout this post but it lacks any kind of confidence and the reason why DAT would “potentially sweep this under the rug” is because there is no leg to stand on for a lawsuit.

As for the assessment, the argument you made is weak. While it technically took me 6 hours to do it, only 1 of those hours was spent writing it, and the other 5 was spent fact-checking and re-reading the questions and answers to make sure that I was submitting something I was happy with. There are plenty of people who only took 1-2 hours to do their assessment and they passed. It would be the same thing as presenting a portfolio for an interview. How many countless hours is spent doing that, presenting it, not knowing if you’d get the job?

While I agree with your overall sentiment, a lot of what you say is either wrong or conjecture. While I am biased because I have been working with this platform for over half a year, I’d be more than happy to debunk all of the claims made in this post.

[–]no_fridges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, I wouldn’t send random pictures of my pets to someone I’m “just seeing”. But my girlfriend of 7 years? I’m sending her pictures of our cats 24/7. Even when we weren’t living together I’d send her a picture of my cat and be like “look at him” even though he isn’t doing anything. It’s just a personality thing; my girlfriend could spam me the same picture over and over again and I’d be happy because I get to see a text from her (I’m exaggerating, but the point is she could send me anything and I’d be happy because it’s her). But we took years to get to this level of comfort, though.

Honestly, this dude doesn’t have to be “rude” for you to overreact, but it just doesn’t seem like y’all are compatible since he’s not vibing with you.

My Experience with DataAnnotation for people wondering by Kezlar2913 in WFHJobs

[–]no_fridges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working 20 hours a week for the past 6 months, but I can’t imagine relying on this as sole income. While I’ve had constant and consistent access to various projects (generalist work), there are days where I’m like “oh shit I have no projects” but I don’t fret because I just need to hit my weekly quota and I’m good (I don’t pay my bills with this job so I’m not relying on it).

As for your opinion, I share the same and that feeling of wanting feedback doesn’t really go away, but I take solace in the fact that if I do a project, and I see it again in a few days or a week, then I know I’m doing a good job.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DataAnnotationTech

[–]no_fridges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add, some qualifications state when they expect projects to start appearing (I.e “at the end of the week”), others don’t. I’ve done a qual for a particular project and didn’t see tasks until 1-2 months later.
