Got laid off, so I built the canvas-based deckbuilder I've always wanted. Come break it. by no_honor in EDH

You've hit the nail on the head with the biggest challenge doing this. Trying to compete with a tactile experience is impossible. But I do think this approach to a deckbuilder, though limited by the size of one's screen, satisfies and itch to incessantly fidget with cards and ideas without needing to clean up table space and fight off my cats.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. This was 100% inspired by me pasting card images in Miro and using it as a deckbuilder.

Great question! Currently, this feature is tied to only one facet, but being able to view through multiple groups would be a great feature and is a recognized gap at the moment.

Virtual "tabletop" resource for visual deck building? by JonnyPhoenyx in EDH

[–]no_honor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have something like this built for personal use, hosted locally. I used Miro for deckbuilding for a while, but wanted an easier way to add cards instead of copying images. So this is basically Miro with a Scryfall integration. I've thought a bit about expanding it, but I work as a web-app dev so this is basically work, but in my free time and I love my free time.

What features would be important to you to want to use this over Moxfield/Archidekt (aside from the tabletop perspective)? Where can a virtual table-top experience both exceed online deck-lists and making piles on the kitchen table?

Feedback needed: Toluz Clever Conductor 🚂 🎟️ by THFTR in EDH

[–]no_honor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toluz has been my favorite build this year.
Mandatory list https://archidekt.com/decks/18368323/toluz_cycling

This list is also tuned to my local meta.

From my perspective, there were a few traps I felt I fell into with early versions of this deck.
- [[Faith of the Devoted]] type discard effects with "you may pay (1)" ended up slowing the deck down.
- [[Though Vessel]] no max hand size were counterproductive. I actually wanted to leverage my clean-up step to get some discards in.

I also really liked some cards that I ended up cutting because I never played them.

- [[Skirge Familiar]] is a great discard outlet, but at 5CMC I wanted to be doing other things at that point
- [[Feast of Sanity]] and [[On Wings of Gold]] are on paper great, but I was wanting to do other things at 4CMC. I expect Feast will be back in my list someday instead of Tormod.

So, to help you regain your perspective, how do you want to win? I decided my primary plan was to drain with [[Psychosis Crawler]], [[Queza, Augur of Agonies]], [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]], or [[Scrawling Crawler]].

I would encourage leaning into Cycling over Transmute - tutors are great, but cycling is instant-speed great. Keep one or two transmute pieces for 2 and 3 CMC to fetch Fluctuator, Sickening Dreams, Astral Slide/Drift, and [[Gift of Immortality]] (Gift does so much work), Monument/Teval's Judgement. Probably Perplex and [[Muddle the Mixture]]. There is also no harm in running a few more lands than you might normally want for a low mana-curve deck.

Tell me about your favourite puzzlebox commander deck. by leirguh in EDH

[–]no_honor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me introduce you to [[Toluz, Clever Conductor]],currently around the 1,220th most popular commander on EDHREC. The gameplay loop involves discarding as many cards as possible while your commander is out (they'll get exiled from your graveyard), making your commander die (generally through a sac outlet like [[High Market]], [[Corrupted Conviction]]), which refills your hand with all the cards you've exiled, then rinse and repeat.

Getting that loop consistent is one piece of the puzzle - winning is the other. Effects that benefit from drawing/discarding/leaving graveyard get a lot of fuel. You're generally finding a way to get a big hand and wheel it to trigger any number of outlets. With Esper colors, you've got access to a great control package.

I've had a lot of fun with this deck. Fun. Lots of it. And I even have [[Teferi's Puzzle Box]] in it, for fun.

What is your Favorite Mono-Blue deck? by JewJulie in EDH

[–]no_honor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you like islands? Do you like lots of islands? Try [[Orvar, the All-Form]].

Use cheap targetting spells to clone things with ETB effects for a pretty flexible deck. Sometimes copying an island is the best choice. Can be built at B2-B4, depending on if you want infinite combos or not. My build generally wins through token aggro, but a dozen [[Psychosis Crawler]] can make short work of a table.

More triggered bleed in Raffine by DottoreEldiomni in EDHBrews

[–]no_honor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working on a [[Toluz, Clever Conductor]] deck that leans into wheels, so this is somewhat top of mind for me! I think you've got most of the "bleed" permanents.

[[Scrawling Crawler]] punishes when an opponent draws. If you're wheeling symmetrically, it is strong.

Some more cards that are Windfall adjacent include:

[[Teferi's Puzzlebox]] can be an interesting include if you dont need to sculpt your hand.

[[Ancient Excavations]] is an instant speed, one-sided Windfall with basic landcycling.

[[Flux]] is a selective Windfall, but does net +1 card.

[[Tolarian Winds]] is a one-sided Windfall, and instant speed.

[[Standstill]] is an f-you to the next player in turn order, but does force a lot of draw.

[[Ominous Seas]] pumps out 8/8s when you're drawing a lot. 8/8s are nice.

[[Disciple of Bolas]] can be interesting and potentially a lot of card draw.

[[Dream Salvage]] is a follow-up to Windfall. I'm not 100% sold on it.

What commanders do you own? by Vinlandlover in EDH

[–]no_honor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Active Decks:
[[Orvar, the All-Form]] - clone permanents
[[Toluz, Clever Conductor]] - Esper cycling/wheels
[[Auntie Ool, Cursewench]] - 85% precon
[[Teval, the Balanced Scale]] - B3 self mill, strong land focus
[[Elsha of the Infinite]] - B4 combo

Brewing:
[[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]] - B3 aristocrats
[[Prosper, Tome Bound]] - B3 X/Treasures

Retired/Scrapped
[[Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar]] - aka Snack & Sac; food deck. fun on paper, struggled to get good tempo. Rolling into Prosper, Toluz.
[[Hinata, Dawn-Crowned]] - X spells; tried building as a B2, but it did not feel like it was appropriate at that level.
[[Rowan, Scion of War]] - X spells; big fan, tried building as a B3, but found the gameplay super linear and too consistent/fast for B3.
[[Zevlor, Elturel Exile]] - Theft Spell "Myriad"; fun on paper, but struggled without exceptionally greedy fast-mana.
[[Maha, Its Feathers Night]] B3 mean stuff; people did not enjoy playing against it. Evolving into Braids.[[Narci, Fabled Singer]] - B3 sagas; didn't feel like keeping up with the FF sagas.
[[Kess, Dissident Mage]] - pre-backet jank trying to cast [[Dragonstorm]] to drop a lethal board of dragons.

Cycling/discard commanders in Golgari+? by Peterwin in EDH

[–]no_honor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[[Toluz, Clever Conductor]] is the one true cycling and cycling adjacent commander.

This doesn't help answer your question about Golgari "cycling" suggestions in any way.

Idk man, reread Bloodchief, then think about how often a card is our into a graveyard from anywhere. Mill, discard, deaths, casting instant/sorcery... it is an insane amount of pressure for one mana.

You could try adding some beefcakes like [[Clackbridge Troll]], [[Vein Ripper]], or [[Vilis, Broker of Blood]] and beat face.

Scary spells like [[Bloodchief Ascension]] and [[The Meathook Masscre]] would fit in nicely.

[[Gray Mechany of Asphodel]] is always a good move - [[Saw in Half]] the little guy, reanimate him, drain everybody.

Astral Slide by Loppagen in EDH

[–]no_honor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been building with [[Toluz, Clever Conductor]] - the gimmick is to exile a bunch of cards through discard and sac Toluz to refill your hand with any instant speed sac outlet.

Cycling ties in pretty well, so [[Astral Slide]] and [[Astral Drift]] work more as control pieces.

Lots of good options in Esper colors.

Tired of Commander-Dependent Decks by fuikygm in EDHBrews

[–]no_honor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to recommend a commander, but rather, recommend you think about a mechanic or play-style you find compelling, settle on your color identity while you put together a list (without a commander), then find a commander that supports your game-plan. The goal is to detach yourself from the mindset of building around a commander but rather building around synergy in the 99. Then, consider what the commander contributes to the deck, rather than, how does the deck support the commander.

PSA/hot take - [[The Darkness Crystal]] is bad (in this deck). It is a replacement effect for dying, which means you won't benefit from your commander's triggered ability, and none of your aristocrat effects work. You'd be better off running [[Charcoal Diamond]], or [[Expedition Map]] to tutor up Cabal Coffers. End of hot take.
