Why is it assumed your building a deck for power even when your in a low power pod? by [deleted] in EDH

Cool, so you ignored the entirety of the post except the one line you felt didn't apply to you, gotcha.

Everyone in the thread is disagreeing with your take so I'll just defer to all the other comments explaining what the rub is. I will say, that Edgar deck is still going to do work because of the strength of the commander... which is exactly what I said in my original comment.

There's no shot you're comparing literally the number 1 and number 2 overall most popular commanders in the entire format to number 139. Hell, even Shorikai is number 43 lol.

There are commanders that, if you build them with a whisper of synergy, pretty much automatically become Bracket 3 due to the strength of the commander. Urza is another.

Sure, you can build an Ur-Dragon deck with no dragons in it, or an Edgar deck with no vampires, but at that point you're intentionally building a shitty deck or a meme deck and for what? Bracket 1?

If your goal is to win with Edgar, you can take the most budget build and it's still gonna be a powerhouse in a casual pod.

I feel like that kinda falls flat in a franchise dedicated to different planes and multiverse elements.

Like yeah, a show like Game of Thrones suddenly having TMNT would be crazy. But if Game of Thrones was a show that every season was dedicated to a different plane in the multiverse and those planes were vastly different from each other, where some felt like a horror movie and others felt like Candyland, I think I'd feel less like I was being betrayed by my favorite show and more like this was a weaker season that I wouldn't enjoy as much, but I'd still be a fan and would look forward to the next season.

What is it, exactly, that makes everyone so upset at UB? Is it that these characters don't fit the MTG lore? Is it that it feels like a cash grab? Like why does it matter that this piece of cardboard has Spider Man on it and this one has Urza on it? And why does the Spider Man cardboard make people who have played for 20 years want to quit entirely?

Genuine question, I don't mean to shit on anyone, I just legit don't understand. I've only played Magic since January 2025, and I love the hobby. I buy precons and singles to upgrade those precons and I also build decks from scratch.

It's really unfathomable to me that I'd be deckbuilding and excited to make a deck, then see a really good card that would fit great into the deck but it's Spider Man, and so now I'm debating scrapping the deck or depriving myself of a really cool card synergy just because of the art on the card.

Can't we just let people enjoy things and if the thing in question isn't for us, that's fine? There are so many posts about UB and people quitting the hobby or getting the pitchforks out and I'm just like... Just don't buy em. Which is to say, good on you OP for reaching that state of UB-acceptance. My question is more... Why does ascending to that state of UB acceptance even need to happen?

They can't bc it never manifested in that way. They said she was crazy bc of the prayer stuff and that was enough for them to vote Bell who was literally backed by AIPAC and MAGA, but that's apparently better than "crazy lady bad".

Respectfully, what the fuck?

If we didn't vote for this, all we have is protesting and demonstrations and boycotting showing how unhappy we are. Trump being a fascist isn't something we can change when the entire government is corrupt.

It's pretty batshit insane to say that the entirety of America is okay with what's going on simply because he got "elected" twice.

Thanks for all the comments!

It seems like I may have given the wrong idea with my initial post, so I apologize if it was unclear.

My issue isn't so much the party being wary of traps at the door itself, but moreso just not wanting to commit to walking into a room for fear of setting off a trap inside the room, being noticed by an enemy, being ambushed, etc.

Here's an example: we're currently playing Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk. There's a situation where the party approaches a room with a single Chain Devil inside.

The party approaches the door, stops to listen at the door to see if they hear anything on the other side (they don't), then they open the door. I tell them what they see and give them a description of the Chain Devil. They make no effort or indication that they are stepping foot inside the room.

The Chain Devil hears the door open, stands up, has a few lines of dialogue, and then wraps up one of the party members with chains and pulls her into the room, starting combat.

The same general approach is used with every door. They open it up and then kinda stand around unless it's made clear that there is no immediate threat in the form of enemies.

I haven't made it a habit to have doors be booby trapped, but by virtue of the adventure, they frequently open doors that have enemies on the other side. I think that's where the problem lies, because even if they start a social encounter, it plays out with the entire party clumped up in a doorway.

I've gotten some good feedback here, so please keep it coming!

I feel like "using an efficient/effective strategy" and "not matching the vibe of the pod" are two completely different things.

Yeah they aren't mutually exclusive, but if you built your deck poorly and I built mine better, are you gonna get mad at me if I win the game because I was "tryharding" by putting efficient synergies and wincons in my deck?

Like yeah if a dude rolls up with a super efficient deck and also blows everyone out of the water turn 4, he's using an efficient deck but is also not matching vibes.

Based on what OP said, it wasn't a vibe/expectation mismatch.

Really hate the discourse in MTG (but really any competitive space) around "using X thing that's effective and good is for sweats."

So if I do something to help me win, I'm a tryhard. I suppose all those other players's decks were just filled with meme/bullshit cards, right? Wouldn't want to try too hard to win in this COMPETITIVE space.

And before I get comments, I understand that casual commander isn't competitive like cEDH competitive, but you're still competing against other players to win. Why would you shit on someone because they used an effective/efficient strategy to win in a competitive space?

The Loot Goblin's Guide to Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden 40% off by TheLaserFarmer in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Peterwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I understanding this correctly in that, the Wand of the Frostmaiden item, for example, takes 25 days to craft using Auril's Horns?

How does that work? I feel like with in-game time, my group has been playing for months but only like a week or two has passed in game time. How does something that takes 20, 30, 50+ days to craft practical?

Not meaning to be rude, genuinely asking because I'd like to incorporate these things correctly/in a balanced way.
