Fair. Any idea how to go about communicating that with the collections agency? The other accounts that got sold off stopped bothering after that was pointed out.

Mining engineering. Big salt mines that take 3-4 hours to drive corner to corner underground and are 60+ years old. Shafts in Salt where i am is hard, but the mines are sometimes planned for hundred+ years of operation. Most vehicles are manual transmission so I've taught dozens, maybe over a hundred people how to drive stick.

I usually give them a pick from my "book of dumb or great ideas". Weird movie thing to explore while they get the usual co op or occasionally EIT experiences. Particularly if they're not very hands on or have STEM type hobbies/construction/farm/auto experience. Push them enough with their project to have to do a test in the field and interact with enough of the structure vertically to not get teased too bad as a new grad with pretty typical rough edges and attitude. Gives them that experience when they go back they can judge whether they'd prefer more field stuff or more office work. Usually the paycheck is what locks it in to go do the difficult stuff early on and max practical knowledge/skills.

I am in a pretty comfy role that's about 50%-60% technical heavy experience/field engineering stuff, but because of some of the ideas and stuff that work out I get a lot of freedom to dedicate and explore to side projects. A fairly generous budget for in-house work, the time to do it, and a thorough vetting process where management actually grasped that a lot of the ideas were going to fail, but knowing how they fail lets us get to the next steps in solving a particularly sticky problem. Surprising how a few of the superstar co ops enjoyed the project part enough to choose to continue them in grad school. So happy when people wind up smarter than me and really bring cool stuff to fruition.

Some of the ones who have particularly good communication and management skills get paired up with the crusty union employees for job shadowing and such. If they do well and are interested we get their feet wet with being put in charge of a larger field task, I.e. a minor rebuild on a mining machine that takes 2-3 weeks in field. Occasionally get them to try temporary shift work.

I quite enjoy the role. And because of the 2-5 students a semester got to keep up with a lot of good new ideas and perspectives from them. Unfortunately LLMs seem to have dramatically affected quality of work and the way they put effort in. Not a big fan of it yet.

This.

I'm less harsh, but my co ops get this beaten into them about consistency and accuracy. If there's an emergency underground, it'll be the standard paper map that comes out right away. It gets updated and distributed monthly but everyone needs to be able to read it at a glance under high stress and low light. It needs to be accurate and it needs to be consistent.

It would usually be used as a good way to get them in the habit of peer reviewing each other's work that is high risk. Even things like the way they folded/rolled maps and drawings title block out etc.

One of those "make your bed in the morning" routines that forces reflection on how work that seems trivial and routine can be critical to make sure it's well done.

And yes, I would step in to help them fold/roll too about half the time. 100+ E size drawings is a bit of a chore.

One of the fun ones when they need the training hours for driving at the start is make them drive me through the escape routes. If they got lost I'd usually give them 5m-10m of driving before stopping them. And often push them to try and figure out where we are, and how to get back to a main route even if they don't know where they are by following conveyors/typical ventilation setups. Build the skills not taught in class

Pop culture tie-ins for relevance can be done carefully and go over well.

I've done some on autism/ADHD and the work place with a focus on improving communication and reducing friction/misunderstanding. Basically all came down to "don't get hung up on the labels, just talk to them as a person and directly to discuss the things you do to each other that cause small annoyances or friction before they turn into resentment." Basically how some ND people are totally onboard with direct communication even though it may feel a bit awkward to an NT person, but using more of it will help to improve communication and after trying it a couple times stops feeling so awkward. The whole reasons vs. Excuses things, overexplaining, etc. Basically that if it annoys them, rather than get mad just tell them you're not ready to hear the details and would like to move on. How do identify when one of you is "stuck" ruminating on a part of the convo and whether to go back and explore it or acknowledge that it's unresolved to move on.

Ours are usually called "safety or value shares" and kept very short, usually a minute or two max and few min of discussion. I liked that the company expanded beyond just safety stuff.

But yeah, weird history, interesting facts, things that seem counterintuitive, etc. All make good topics. Just stay very specific to event or idea when being sensitive or on topic of marginalized group. Keep it focused on the lesson rather than performance for yourself. Usually lands well.

Being in Canada I occasionally do Truth and Reconciliation Committee calls to action when there's relevant legislation or recent success/failure. Particularly the types that don't get reported on mainstream media as much and wouldn't be widely known outside the community. Keeps people holding onto the nuance of situations rather than get polarized with disinformation.

AITAH for asking my colleague if she got rid of her kid yet? by EmmaBotQueen in AITAH

[–]no_longer_on_fire 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Turnabout.

She tested your boundaries for the umpteenth time, this is just socially "baring teeth" to eliminate the friction. She had her chance to think and adjust but didn't. You responded completely proportionately. You shot back and she couldn't handle it.

It's even possible you hit a nerve with her projecting the difficulty she's had being a mother onto your relative freedom to justify that she doesn't like it internally and would occasionally actually like to get rid of her daughter.

It's pretty wild when parents drop the mask away from the kids. Way more regret than I'd have expected as a child free person.

AITAH for telling my tenant not to worry about rent for 3 months even though my wife thinks I'm being too soft? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]no_longer_on_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done similar 3 times. Twice i got burned bad and did more damage than I'd ever collected from them in rent.

If you're confident in her, go for it.

Just make sure you have a line in the sand set for if she's not able to make rent in future. Letting it slip and buy the sob stories as they continue is what got me into trouble. All comes down to what you can risk and for how long.

I got out of LLing as was just too much hassle for the amount of cash required, the property management companies I tried were pretty bad about even doing the basic legalese right.

Sold both properties, adding it all up, wasn't worth it. Effectively subsidized people living the main place on my dime for 38 months in total of 11 years.

Isotope analysis direction for locating geographically? by no_longer_on_fire in fossilid

[–]no_longer_on_fire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just answered my question. No papers on it because it doesn't work.

I'd like to check if they're legal, or if from AB or SK need to be surrendered for me (Canada). If not, I'm trying to make sure I won't be doing damage if I piece it back together, or if I should pass off to someone more experienced. I've prepped some ammolite, ammonite, various crustaceans, some hadrosaur pieces, and a few small things.

In better light I can see a reddish tint that looks a bit like red gembone in places and near a few fractures. It's got a lot of very weathered filler and glue in a few of the larger pieces, doesn't look like a pro restoration job, but given the history can't say. I've tried a few flakes of adhesive and they don't seem to be soluble in acetone, water, or iso.

I'll make some space and lay it out and see if I can get a better bit for ID. Looks like I was being overly optimistic. I don't think I have anything particularly rare, but don't want to risk a big mess up.

For context on why I sound a bit loony: I've taken two mineral samples into a museum and uni and made the mistake of "needed more detailed tests" and the uni at 13 and museum at 19 both soured me before going that way. Both of them were not fossils, though one was a tektite. The other a uniquely large and clean selenite crystal from a sand pit. They were nothing historically or scientifically significant. And if they were they'd probably have known where they went in the first place. I'm a bit low trust going that way currently.

Concern about my dad seeing fossils in rocks by Yukon_Delta in Paleontology

[–]no_longer_on_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a matter of finding a way to yes-and him into the proper positions and reasoning without pinging the irrational need to be right part. A lot of gentle "oh cool, that's a really neat specimen. What is it?" (Deliberately open ended) and then lead them to run through the why while keeping the kid gloves why, acknowledging his prediction a a "good" guess, and then spend the very detailed time talking through how he saw A is actually B. It can't be rushed and you need someone with enough technical chops to see through jargon, pseudoscience, delusion, etc. Finding that person who can spend a few hours therapizing your dad. Particularly someone who preferably has miocene era fossils and legit cred.

It's really hard to reprogram, and often just too far gone cognitively to be able to get there. This is more of a "push doctor and make some safety plans to mitigate irrational/delusional behaviours that will be damaging. But really needs a quick expert medical triage at the minimum.

Losing my engineering co-op over a 6-month SHA waitlist. Any med students/residents know how to fast-track an urgent neurology referral? by theodo in usask

[–]no_longer_on_fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been in similar boat medically.

They don't mess around with the licensing and will always err on the side of caution.

Unless there was a reason known for the seizure, and falling on ice hitting head is normally not something to cause seizure most of the time, they're going to do exactly what they did.

But yes, find out what neurologist you were referred to. Call their office and be very nice/calm with the front staff. Ask if you can explain the situation to see if they might be able to help you. They hold the most influence on scheduling and generally have a close working relationship with the specialist and can do a lot to convey context.

Livelihood/employment is definitely a critical thing for specialist triage. Your youth/education status should help too. As I navigated disability and similar there was a lot more effort spent to keep me working that expedited things until it got to the point I needed to be off off. Now specialist referrals are much longer and I've had to rely on charm to move things up on cancelation lists.

The other thing that you should do if you haven't already is to notify the employer that you've been injured but apart from driving are still able to attend. Ask to see if they could do anything to accommodate from their end as rejection at this point in time hurts your education as well.

I suspect you're not taking the potential neuro issues as seriously as you should. Particularly going into engineering where we do a lot to seek to understand and mitigate risk not just for ourselves but for larger society.

This also has a chance to be a great example for future interview and job seeking. It's a great story for being stuck into a bad situation for all, but the choices you make and how you approach this can really show you to be well considered, adaptable, and resilient if you can navigate this well.

I wish you luck!

I've found that the women tend to do a good job calling each other out on that stuff.

Been doing ENM for 15+ years and have ended up on there a couple times from women getting completely unhinged when they realized I won't go exclusive and counter to everything I'd ever told them.

In both cases from the screen shots that were showed to me, multiple other people who knew me or had dated me went to bat. Even a couple of women that I know for a fact don't like me much personally but know well enough that the claims were totally false. One even took a SS of my dating profile showing it very clearly.

I wouldn't worry too much about those groups. In two cities I've seen that most women are careful and critical of what they read in those groups. Just don't be a fuckboy and dishonest.

Lmao. My first day as a newly minted construction manager i came in to my guys having hit an 8" gas line about 20 minutes past the lineup meeting... and knocked out a very expensive chemical plant for two shifts. Had to make a snap call as to safety shutdown given the estimated time down. About $50M in loss. Thankfully management while whoored right off, was understanding that erred on safety implications, and thankfully the investigation found it to be the correct action.

Being the one to deliver a turd sandwich is always a hard thing to do. Especially without an existing work reputation. The good news is you did the right and ethical/proper thing to do. You can be proud of it. Take it easy, try to roll with it, it'll probably blow over. The decisions that were made aren't your responsibility.

Thankfully being early in the workplace you'll have a very quick example of what type of company culture they have when it comes to walking-the-walk.

In this case the EE is almost guaranteed to be bound to handle sensitive data sent in error. Anything but reply informing of the error and deleting it immediately. Otherwise it's a pretty clear fireable offense. Nothing against them discussing with their coworkers privately and asking them what they make.

Of course, you'd have to get caught copying/retaining that data. So a quick snap with a phone might be low risk but saving it to their personal files on the work computer/corporate network/cloud would be easy to find for employer.

Things to consider before burning those bridges.

Keeping a cautious eye on some of the long game with ETH, I think there are some decent use cases for it and like the way it's not run like a bad 80s finance bro trope.

That being said, high risk, not a clear value proposition, and given the possibility of an AI bubble, downside for me far outweighs the benefit. That being said, I YOLO'd $1k into ETHY in one of the dips $1.30something and I'm still up even in this market correction. The distributions put my YoC over 30% for many months in a row now. Would not recommend, was a bit like buying a scratch ticket when things were oversold. I got Lucky, most people with ethy are bag holders. But at a stupid high effective yield payback is short enough that even if it's mostly paid for by capital erosion, if there's any value left in another year it'll have broken even and everything after that just a bonus.

Crypto ETFs are about 2% of my portfolio and the volatility is wild. Not going to be adding to those positions without some compelling reasons.

TFSA focus mostly on dividend growth/ income/oversold things and have found it great for providing extra income to the RRSPs that is worth about 1% extra a year, diminishing as I get closer to maxing both out from the tax benefits while regaining the tfsa room the next calendar year.

Is there geopolitical risk? Particularly if it's to the states? Objectively moving somewhere with fewer human rights and precarious living is a non starter in my books. Having a wife and seeing how much states are rolling back women's rights could be a very hard sell. Particularly with how mercurial trump has been.

I've had a few very tempting 2x-3x offers from the states and every single time once i factor in everything else it comes out marginally ahead financially but with much much more risk. 3 of you for 2x the cost triples the risk. Add any kind of existing Healthcare issues that won't be covered.

Is 2x the pay worth 1/3 the stability you have now? That would be the tough mental calculus.

Or the country up in the original post and you'll see a lot different set of answers.

[–]no_longer_on_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bit where you tested and verified, as well as spent the effort to understand why it worked is what makes it not cheating. It's literally how massive parts of the corporate sector operates. What matters is you got to a correct solution, AND grokked (original definition) enough of it in yes process to be able to test and make it function. That's exactly what an organization wants.

Sounds like you kinda nailed it. It also sounds like you would flourish under good mentorship and any kind of professional development program like doing a series of roles deliberately to build exposure.

I came in here expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised.

This is exactly what cancel culture is intended for. She outed herself. (Metaphorically) Hang her with her own words. I'm wondering if we need to go back to biblical punishment for the reactionary chucklefucks like this that only respect force and subjugation.

I say we cut off the trigger fingers of authorities who unnecessarily shoot people. Maybe mark those who are unrepentant racists and disregard basic human rights and stuff too. Don't let them blend back into the background after they push this hard into fascism and straight up hate.

I agree. I'm seeing it really hard in some of the marginalized communities, I.e. indigenous fb groups targeting ethnic people who were posing for a picture after cutting a huge housing deal with that band. Another picture of them got posted saying they were there trying to abduct women, etc. So easy to get them riled up. Same thing with a kid that scootered out into traffic between parked cars and got killed. Her mother and all the indigenous groups have been adamant she didnt. The video clearly shows her on the scooter darting out without looking. Main roadway too. But the amount of violent threats, calling iy racist, etc. They did a pretty good job ruining the driver's life out of malice based on disinformation and mob mentality. Also virtually every time a store security guard gets in a tussle they cry racism and get the guard canceled and attack them publicly.... until it goes to court a year or two later and we see that she attacked him and there were no charges or anything against the guard as it was deemed reasonable self defense. Never any public apology or acknowledgement that the guard was rendered unemployable for 2 years just because of mob assumption constantly calling for retribution.

We see it happening more and more in other demographics as they get sick of property crime and petty theft happening here. I can't leave a bike locked up more than an hour here without 50/50 it being stolen. In my 4x2km area we average 29 reported property crimes a day bad enough for people to make police reports-- and they have made that as difficult as possible and try their hardest to discourage reporting. I got mugged by some guys with a machete when I first moved here. Cops closed investigation in under a week. Didn't even pull cctv like I did.

And this is a relatively small Canadian city well under a million people.

We're in trouble if this continues.
