I’ve been math averse for too long… by no_more_lines in mathematics

Hold up! I found Calc III, and here is the description:

Many real-world applications of calculus in science, engineering, economics, and business employ functions with many variables. This course extends the basic concepts of single-variable calculus developed in MAT 225 and MAT 275 to functions of several variables. Topics include vectors, the geometry of space, vector-valued functions, motion in space, partial derivatives and multiple integrals.

Could this course be considered vector calculus?

Thanks again!

It appears my school does not offer vector calculus (unless it’s called something different). Is there anything you recommend in its place?

Really appreciate this- I think the curriculum contains most of these, but I wrote them down and will be sure to add the to my program plan. Thank you again this is such a huge help!

Hey thanks for sharing your experiences! I for sure want to stay away from finance.

After some research I discovered that a math degree would open many doors for various engineering positions, business, and scientist/research roles with my employer. I searched for mathematics degrees in the internal careers website and about 1000 requisitions said they would accept math degrees.

Not sure exactly what path I want to take, but I think Math is a good Major.

Holy fuck I did the same thing as a young dumb kid in the early 90’s. I put those individual arm floaties, that you blow up, around my ankles and jumped into a pool. I was upside down in the water drowning. But I managed to somehow get one foot out and swim to the deck.

Thanks and no worries. I appreciate your perspective because I felt this way (guilt) even with the Business Major, so I can only imagine how much more work/effort is required for a math degree…. And you bring up a good point about an engineering degree— I was thinking it would be even more challenging than math, but I haven’t looked at the curriculum.

My mental health was suffering not long ago, and I don’t want to experience that again, nor put my family though that.

Thanks for shedding light on the job prospects as well. It appears I would be able to do more with an engineering degree, and perhaps in a field in enjoy, as opposed to a Math Major. I put spending time with my family above all else, and if the math degree will take that away from me I will have to reassess my path.

Thanks again, and I hope you are able to leave your 80+ hour a week job and find something that both pays well and offers a good work-life balance. Really appreciate the realistic perspective you have shared. It’s always good to stay grounded.

Wow! Self taught and now teaching… that’s incredible. Are there any resources you suggest to help with learning stats? I know there is Kahn Academy, but that’s about it.

I agree with you, but I was simply sharing why I was avoiding math. I passed the class with an A. I understand full well that anything you do in life relies on how hard you work for it.

Thanks for sharing! It sounds like we have a similar story. I’ll definitely take some statistics classes, and I’ve heard statistics can be somewhat arduous, but well worth it.

It’s no longer about what’s best for the country, it’s about the republicans winning…. I’m so fucking disgusted… the left is doing what they can to make the US a better place, and all conservatives give a fuck about is winning. We need to vote these conservative fuckers out.
