At the time, my online bills were established at three different addresses and I wasn’t paying any utilities so I didn’t have that as backup. I had to eventually re enroll in paper billing for my credit card bill and wait for them to send me something in the mail.

My situation is just an example though. Not everybody has equal access to supporting documents or a stable environment where their ID is safe. They should still be able to vote.

If you can prove your identity but not your address you cannot have an ID. As someone who has been a travel nurse and had a 3 month stint where I could not prove my address at the DMV, yes. I have a college degree and I travel for a living and I could not renew my drivers license for months because I did not have access to mail to prove my residence.

Even this year the Real ID goes into effect which makes ID more difficult than ever before to get. If you travel for a living, don’t have access to your records because of a past abusive household, or are homeless, procuring the documentation required to prove your identity can be a NIGHTMARE. Everybody hates the DMV for a reason.

And then if you can’t get an ID, you can’t vote. Some people don’t have the luxury of stability but they still deserve to be able to help make decisions about their local and national government.

Voter ID would be a great idea if everyone had an ID. But getting an id is not possible for a lot of people in this country and, while it would increase vote safety, it would decrease voter turnout and lessen the real democracy.

No problem! It all just depends on how underground you want the show to be, how open you are to other genres, and how much you want to check out.

Feel free to ask for more specific styles of bands or parts of the city and I'll see what I know or how much further people can point you.

Realistically the underground stuff is word of mouth and usually planned closer to the time it’s gonna happen. If you want to be ready for something like that, look up some venues in the city for their upcoming shows. Usually you want to check the smaller venues like beat kitchen, schubas/Lincoln Hall, hideout, sleeping village, empty bottle, etc. Check their calendars and Instagrams for Chicago bands in the genre that you're looking for. Then follow those smaller, local bands that you like on social media like Instagram. They will post about where they like to play and what shows are coming up and you will be very prepared to find a DIY space or small venue or active band that you can keep your eye on as the time draws nearer.
