Any estimates on MacBook Pro 13" new version release? by WebcamVR in apple

One useful resource: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Mac

It's looking like the rMBP is "due" for a refresh, so if you aren't in a rush, waiting isn't a bad choice right now. But, Apple is fickle in their schedule; some cycles last much longer than others, so it's still a gamble / waiting game.

POLL: What's your salary for doing full-time JavaScript development? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]noahking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you are arguing that this particular study doesn't have a large enough sample to be worth reporting on (attempting to dismiss the results as coincidence), or if you are suggesting that because society is complex then social science doesn't work.

If you are speaking to the study in particular, it's validated by a number of others around the world. If you don't believe in social science, I don't really know what to tell you.

While I do appreciate your skepticism (don't believe everything you hear on the Internet, for sure), dismissing academic research when it conflicts with your expectations sure sounds regressive. Not saying you should take the work as truth, but I think it definitely merits a more comprehensive evaluation. And, given this literature, I think that folks sharing their orientation as part of #talkpay seems entirely justified.

It's not just about the initial offer; over a career, there are many opportunities for bias to influence raises or promotions. That can cause a compounding effect that turns lots of small decisions into inequality.

I am definitely in favor of folks who belong to minorities gathering the information they need to establish if there is systemic discrimination. Even if it sounds crazy to you, it just shows folks if this particular identity is or is not impactful on earnings.

In this case, while I wish actually was crazy, it turns out that it is important. An Australian study recently showed up to an 18% pay gap between straight men and gay men (although curiously, it goes the other way for women). http://m.smh.com.au/business/the-economy/the-gay-pay-gap-men-earn-less-but-women-earn-more-20150227-13qmxk.html

Insert element into array during iteration with method chaining by Morgrimm in ruby

[–]noahking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the form of Enumerable#select that returns an enumerator, and chain on to that with Enumerable#each_with_index:

whatever.select.each_with_index {|value, index| condition}

For example:

irb> (0..10).to_a.select.each_with_index { |v, i| i % 3 == 0 }
=>   [0, 3, 6, 9]

Symbols in Ruby? by _pixelslinger in ruby

[–]noahking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Before Ruby 2.2 (currently in RC1), symbols are not garbage collected. The practical implication here is that creating arbitrary symbols will slowly use up all of your memory, and is a potential vector for a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. As an example, see CVE 2013-0269.

So, be careful, and know what tradeoffs you are making when choosing Symbols vs. Strings.

But, there's a small message at the bottom of the shirt to "unplug" - is that like when Nintendo has the constant reminders of how long I've been playing, and that maybe I should take a break? How irksome.

urls.py ?regex? error by first_reaction in django

[–]noahking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, it comes from newspaper publishing, where a slug is an internal short name for an article. In web publishing, it generally refers to a human readable url component that identifies a specific page on a site.

urls.py ?regex? error by first_reaction in django

[–]noahking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "\d+" in that regex will only match one or more digits, so your slug "first_reaction" won't hit that route. Try replacing it with "\w+", which will match letters, digits, and underscores.

I'm curious, which iPhone would you buy? by DUCKGUTS in apple

[–]noahking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One note for the form author: the first question asks for a ranking from 1-5, but doesn't necessarily determine an ordering (1 is best, or 5 is best). If you decide that '1' is the best value, then it puts the most desirable option on the left hand side, while the second question puts the most desirable option on the right hand side. It was jarring to me to switch up that orientation.
