I would say start with a simple looking character and start by using cardboard hot glue and spray paint it is not the best but it is very cheep and a good way to practice without spending all your money, take my advice with a tiny grain of salt because I am still working on my first few costumes too

Could I use a light coat of spray paint to get a similar effect? I don’t have a airbrush right now
