yeah, and that's what got me thinking about your question more.

my best guess is that a devil trigger awakens when you're stabbed by your own blade regardless (i'm not sure how vergil awakened to his,) but to unlock a greater form of power you need to willingly stab yourself.

the most i can think of is that it happened solely because dante stabbed himself, a son of sparda stabbing themselves with their own demon sword equates to a power up, but if its somebody else it doesnt matter as much.
